As I continue my introductory journey through Harry Potter, I continue to be appreciative of the compelling writing and excellent characters. It is also very revealing to me of what interests me most in books, which is character development and relationships, much more than plot, so I am not very excited by the constant peril of the books. I also find, so far at least, that the plots follow a pretty consistent formula: Harry's miserable summer with the Dursleys, adventures in Daigon Alley, adventures getting to Hogwarts, introduction to this year's classes, struggles with teachers, a few Quidditch matches, and then DANGER, with a wink-wink from Dumbledore, who always seems to actually know what's going on but leaves it to Harry and his friends to take care of it.
On that note, I think it's interesting to examine Dumbledore from the perspective of an educator. As an adult reading these books, it has sort of bothered me that Dumbledore leaves his students to take on these potentially deadly situations, especially when it seems like he knows what's going on. But when I think about it more, I know that as an educator myself, I'm often trying to give my students the space to try things out and learn for themselves without my always stepping in to fix things. That's a perspective I want to keep in mind as I continue with the series.
Okay now that I've gone through this again originally Harry Potter and the Philosophers/Sorcerers stone is my all time favorite, hands down this is one is my all time favorite out of the entire series. I love how much Harry and Hermione and Ron have grown and just love Remus and Sirius. Jim Dale is just perfection within the audio books....So good <3

Sin dudas mi libro (y adaptación) fav de toda la saga! Dónde se introduce a mi personaje favorito de la vida: Remus Lupin
Sirius!!!! Lupin!!!!! So many amazing characters introduced in the same book! LOVE IT!!!!
This was a great book because it was a change of pace from all of the other books from the series. Voldemort isn't in this book, but we are introduced to new and very important characters. This book also unlocks secrets surrounding the murder of the Potters and the real person who betrayed them.
AKA Harry Potter and the Pressing Need to Overhaul the Wizard Criminal Justice System Because Seriously (Siriusly (no one can stop me from saying this)) What the Hell.
I liked this much better than the second book. It's longer and darker, but I also think it's the funniest of the first three. Standouts beyond Fred and George include Sir Cadogan trying to fight everyone and Oliver Wood's frenzied fixation on the Quidditch Cup even with Sirius Black on the loose.
Hagrid gets a little more attention in this book, and boy oh boy is it endearing.
Hagrid is used to being perceived as dangerous and intimidating, and that is precisely why he sees the good in creatures most write off as dangerous and intimidating. Others rush to judgment, but he extends the benefit of the doubt, eager to understand and even nurture. He is loyal, earnest, and wears his heart on his sleeve. He's almost a foil to Snape, and shockingly, the one who knows how to express his emotions doesn't bully children for a living.
Sirius alone would make this a worthwhile book. Dementors and the Mudblood thing are such great analogies too!
I loved this book the most other than any book in this series. The way J.K. Rowling has written this book blew my mind apart. How can she think of such story. J. K. Rowling, you've made me a great fan of yours
edit: i'm gonna up this to five stars because all i've been able to think about for the past two days is this book and sirius black he's cool
i kinda wanna give this five stars
the irony of me giving this two stars before-
(Reread, obviously.)
Where many people love this the most of all the Harry Potter books, PoA is probably my second favorite installment in the series (Sorcerer's Stone is number one). Then again, that might change as I work through the rest of the books. It HAS been quite a while since I've read the series!
This one has such great intrigue and mystery, taking it into a slightly more mature territory than the first two. This is such an amazing quality of the books that I can't quite put my finger on how it's done: they mature along with both their main characters, and their audiences.
The introduction of new characters (Trelawney, Lupin, and of course Sirius Black himself) is so welcomed. Each one has their own, completely unique voice and energy.
This book also has an incredibly satisfying ending scene.
I'm now going to listen to the Real Weird Sisters talk about this book on their amazing podcast, and then move on to the fourth!
NOW THIS IS WHAT I WANTED!
Except for the majorly cheap time travel twist, this book is a thorough delight through and through.
The character depth and focus are phenomenal. The drama is brilliant and realistically handled, and it is paced really well. It's just a brilliant book all around.
I won't yap too long like I do for some of my reviews here, but I'm really pleased with this! Got a little emotional towards the end for Harry, and I even managed to forget how much I hate J.K. Rowling now for a little while and get totally engrossed!
Exceptional.
I quite enjoyed myself during the listen, but now, after the fact, there is a severe feeling of void. The book was written for children, and it's perceivable (mostly in a bad way). There were some charming elements I enjoyed (e.g. chocolate being the cure for dementor fatigue), but the naivety of the story, especially the finale, was more dull than charming. And yes I've known all the plot twist already, but I feel I wouldn't have been impressed even with zero knowledge, because of the way the plot twists were handled. I feel like I need a break from the series for a while. I can't decide between 3 and 3.5 stars.
Gran libro.
5 stars bc of my love of Sirius + Lupin + Buckbeak!!! I can't even express how much i love them
- Not to mention the fact that Lupin was one of the BEST DADA professors Hogwarts had while Harry, Hermione, Ron were there
And we can't forget about Fred + George + the Marauder's Map!
Justice4Buckbeak!!

In fiction/fantasy writing, it's easy for authors to lose track of the story by trying to develop the world. JK Rowling does an excellent job of keeping the plot compelling and clear as Harry starts third year at Hogwarts. His process of discovery and the relationships built in this book make it one of the best of the series.
Age range: 12+
Definitely contains more challenging themes than the first two, and I was terrified of the dementors as a kid.
So far this is my favorite book in the series. I thought it did a good job in transitioning the story to a more mature one, handling topics that start resembling more the problems that a young man encounters rather than a kid.
Sirius Black and professor Lupin were great characters that in my opinion jumped the ranks quickly to become some of the best in the series.
The writing was also an improvement in my opinion. Although there were times where the pace was extremly slow.
Moving forward I expect more of the same as Harry comes of age.
Another great read from J K Rowling. It is very interesting how she manages to link everything together so well. Small, minor sentences from the first chapters turn out to be so crucial in the final chapters - everything makes so much sense. A masterpiece in threading narratives and plots together. The stories are getting darker and darker, and yet there is always hope glimmering through by the end of the book. Truly love Rowling's writing. Truly love Dumbledore- he's the best!
