I found “Storm Front” to be a great beginning to Jim Butcher's series, the Dresden Files. It is a great introduction to Harry Dresden. I am hoping to read more of the series soon.
Have read twice April 2005 & December 2012
Liked ..... but didn't love this book. Another reviewer compared it to a lifetime movie and I totally agree with that. It kept my attention and I wanted to finish it to see what happened to all the characters.
The book had a lot of good points - a compelling mystery and good writing for the most part. But there were weak points. First of the title... there was a new boyfriend but the main character didn't marry him. There were also some parts of the story that took me out of the book. An example, the lead character goes the hospital she is able to visit a crime victim, despite having no family connection. I kept thinking there is no way the hospital staff would allow that.
But despite the book's weak points, I definitely see it being a compelling read. It would make a great beach novel.
With everything going on... I could not focus on anything too serious or dark. I decided to go with a romance.
I enjoy Talia Hibbert's books. Untouchable did not disappoint me. I liked reading about Hannah and Nate. I like the sweetness and simplicity of a romance when it seems that we are living in a dystopian universe.
So if you need an escape from the insanity of our current events - grab a book by Talia Hibbert.
Didn't love.... didn't hate. Interesting premise just didn't think the details were worked out very well. I didn't find characters fleshed out either. I didn't understand their motivations. There was enough there for me want to finish the book but I wouldn't pick up another novel by Kubica anytime soon.
Beautiful heartbreaking story ... glad I read it but there were definitely tears in my eyes through the last few chapters of the book.
As with all inspector Gamache series - I enjoyed it. I loved the interactions and connections Gamache and friends have more than the mystery and solving of the murder. The mystery felt as if it was filler for the rest of the story. But it was still an enjoyable read.
Great book - Really enjoyed this book. It was a good read that kept my attention. If you like creepy thillers - you will enjoy it.
So good! Really enjoyed this read. It probably took me a little longer to read because I was dragging my feet to finish. One of my favorites reads of 2020 - so far.
I would recommend this book to readers who like strong characters, mystery and a look at how family ties stay connected even in trauma.
This memoir is a great read. I keep telling my friends it is a true soap opera. I couldn't put it down. I know that I will be recommending it to a lot of people because I already have! It is all about growing up with a self centered immature mother who has an incredibly small moral code. At the very tender age of 14, her mother makes her daughter complicit in her affair. The ramifications of this echo through her life. The author does an amazing job of telling her truth in a very open and revealing way.
Really enjoyable read .... I always love a book about fae and enchanted woods. I strongly recommend it if you like books about old English folklore.
Read Harder Challenge 2020 - Task #2: Read a retelling of a classic of the canon, fairytale, or myth by an author of color
Really enjoyable re-telling of Pride and Prejudice
This book was challenged at the library I work at. The gentleman challenging it referred to it as being porn. In the way he talked about it - it is obvious that he did not read it but is just following someone else's marching orders on what to target in a public library collection.
This book is a memoir of Maia discovering who they are. It is an honest introspective book that the author wrote for teenagers who may be struggling with same issues Maia struggled with. It is a book that belongs in library collections. It is well written and illustrated.
Funny fact: I know of at least 3 people who have now read the book BECAUSE of the challenge.
Read Harder Challenge 2020 Task #4 Read a Graphic Memoir
George Takei's memoir of his childhood in American concentration camps - very good.
This book has an interesting backstory: inspired by a song written for the podcast This American Life by the rap group Clipping. It is a world where the children of pregnant women thrown overboard during slave trade survived their mother's murders and become the wajinru - a ocean dwelling people.
Solomon builds off this premise and creates a main character who seeks to find herself apart from her job of remembering all of the wajinru's past. I enjoyed reading this book and immersing myself in this world.
Thanks to netgalley for the chance to read this great book.
This book was slow to start for me and the ending was meh. But it definitely caught my attention about a 1/4 way through and I read the rest of the book quickly.
When the book started, I was trying to figure who Annie was - was she a reliable narrator or not? I think it was that issue that made the book drag at the beginning. Once Annie and Fin started on their joint adventure, I was far more interested. I felt the ending came quick and wrapped up a little to neatly.
I would read another book by Mina. She definitely has potential as an author.
I enjoyed the beginning of this book. It caught me with the first sentence. I really want to see where the book with the the antagonistic relationship with Gideon and Harrow. But the deeper I went, the more confusing it got.
4th book in the Armand Gamache series... Armand and his wife encounter murder while on their anniversary holiday. I love the characters and the depths of this series.
Page turner! Don't want to say too much about the book because... no spoilers. But it was creepy and intense. I kept want to read the ending to make sure the main character would be ok.
Enjoyed it and would read more of this authors books!
