Novella inspired by real life of Levi English… tells the story of a young boy who runs away and lives with the Comanches - well written and totally held my attention.
Quick read… this book centers on a mysterious appearing and disappearing office with a doctor that prescribes cat to fix people’s problems. I couldn’t put it down.
This was a fascinating read. I had never heard of Jessie Redmon Fauset before this book. Murray did a great job of bringing her back to life in this book. If you have any interest in the Harlem Renaissance - this is a must read novel. Fauset worked along side W. E. B. Du Bois working on the magazine The Crisis. She worked with many well known poets and novelists.
I could not put this book down!
Great novel based on a true event! Really enjoyed reading this book. I flew through reading it. If you enjoy historical fiction- this would be a good book to read.
I really enjoy Lansdale's writing style. Great plot with surprises throughout the book. The characters are well developed & interesting.
Advanced reading copy from Netgalley:
“The Daughters of Palatine Hill” focuses on Ancient Rome from the female perspective -Livia, the wife of Caesar Augustus, his daughter, Julia and Cleopatra Selene, the orphan daughter of Cleopatra and Marc Anthony. I have always enjoyed learning about ancient Rome so I was immediately interested in it.
I found the novel to be a page turner. I stayed up late reading it and couldn't put it down throughout the day. I think anyone who enjoys character driven stories based in historical fact will love this novel.
This is the author's second book. I haven't read her first novel so this can be read as a stand alone. But I have plans to read her first novel since I enjoyed this so much.
Read Harder Challenge 2020 Task #1 Read a YA nonfiction book
Horrible story of abuse of children at a “reformatory” - very dryly reported in this book. Can't imagine recommending it due to subject matter and the dryness of the writing.
A short graphic biography of Andy Warhol -I felt it captures the unique personality of Warhol. The book touches on the highlights of his life. It is a great introduction to how Warhol developed his career.
Reread..... enjoyable. Planning on reading more of the series.
2024 Re-read -My current thoughts on the book: a really simple story fluffed out by pomp and circumstance 3 stars
I read this novel years ago and had remembered it as a good read. My feelings about it now are mixed. I really enjoyed the beginning which centered on the main character's experience of being a POW in Malaysia. The second half of the novel which centered on her in Australia dragged a bit. Also it was a bit hard to just causally read the institutional racism in regards to the Australian native people.
But overall it was a good read.
I really enjoyed this book ... it was interesting on several layers. It was firstly about a love of reading and sharing that love. It was also an exploration of a relationship between a son and his mother. Finally it was about facing death and living as much as you can despite terminal cancer. I would recommend this book for many reasons.
I wanted to like this book. But I just found it ok. The main characters weren't all that interesting or charming. I basically finished the book just to see how the author would wrap up the romance.
Another factor I disliked about the book was the side romance with the main heroine's mother. It felt added on and distracted from the main story.
I have read another book by Sherry Thomas “Beguiling the Bride” and enjoyed it a lot. I think that she has really improved her writing skills and development of her characters since this book. I will continue to read her new series but her first novel just didn't move me very much.
Good for what it is. Plot is interesting but definitely meant for young readers. I remember enjoying this novel when I was about 12.
I liked this book BUT ... Molly drove me a little crazy sometimes. She did everything by the seat of her pants and somehow it all worked out. Luckily her world is created by a writer to made sure it all worked out. The resolution of the murder bugged me too. I won't spoil the ending but it wasn't through the justice system.
I am planning on reading the next book in the series but I hope it will give me a a reason to continue with the series.
Enjoying this series - already have the third book lined up to read. I like the character of Mike Bowditch. He can be frustrating at times. But he is a flawed character attempting to do better.
The murder and resolution of the main story worked well. I found it interesting that Doiron used an actual case in Maine as his inspiration. I definitely recommend this series.
This is the third book in a series featuring Katie Burkholder, a police chief in a Ohio town with mostly Amish population. She was raised Amish but left after a dramatic incident when she was a teenager.
The best part of this book for me is the relationship between Kate and John Tomasetti ( a FBI agent that she regularly works with). They are both broken people, and yet they somehow work together. The mystery kept my interest - although I would enjoy the series more, if the mysteries moved away from totally Amish participants.
I liked this book but not sure liked the characters much. I felt sorry for the daughters but wished the resolution had been a bit happier. I would have liked the daughters to have a better view of things once time had passed.
Took me a while to finish due to never being alone in the car - I listened to the audiobook.
Butcher really comes into his own in this entry in the Dresden series. Harry seems to be at another level in this book. I enjoy this series very much and look forward to the next one.
Listening/reading the second book in the The Dresden Files series. I like Harry. He is a good guy who does the right things even when doing the wrong thing would benefit him better. The series follows the detective genre . . . but the detective happens to be a wizard. I really enjoy listening to the audio book which is read by James Marsters (Spike - Buffy the Vampire Slayer).
Listened to/read... I liked the first 2 books a lot but I felt like in this book Harry really comes into his own. I am looking forward to reading the next book.
