I wish I could erase my mind and read this again. I love a creepy winter scene. Add a dilapidated highland church? Immaculate. I did figure out the twist before the book told me, but it was a proud moment not a sigh of predictability. This is my first book by Feeney, but it definitely won't be my last.
This book has a dual perspective which I enjoyed and an unexpected third party. Definitely alot of WTF moments in this book with all the unexpected twists. Every chapter has a small twist that makes you want to continue reading to find out more. It could have done without the epilogue because it didn't really add much. Overall a good winter read ❄️ although I do still have some unanswered questions throughout the book 🤔
“Rock Paper Scissors” by Alice Feeney delves into the complex dynamics of a husband and wife entwined in a web of lies, set against the backdrop of a getaway to a secluded cabin that they win. This psychological thriller keeps you guessing until the very end, starting with a slow burn that takes its time to introduce the characters and their fraught relationship. While this might leave some readers feeling a bit disconnected at first, the tension builds as the story progresses.
As the narrative unfolds, the layers of deception and hidden truths begin to unravel, drawing you deeper into the intricacies of their marriage and the secrets they've been hiding from one another. Although I didn't feel entirely connected to the characters right away, Feeney's writing gradually captivated me, revealing the cracks in their facade and the motives behind their lies.
The secluded cabin, meant to be a retreat, quickly becomes a setting for conflict and revelations. I highly recommend pushing through to the end because the twists that await are genuinely shocking. Just when I thought I had a handle on the situation, Feeney expertly flipped the script, leaving me gasping at the unexpected outcomes. The story evolves into a thrilling exploration of trust, betrayal, and the lengths people will go to protect their secrets.
Despite the slow start, “Rock Paper Scissors” ultimately delivers an engaging experience filled with suspense and surprises. Feeney's skillful storytelling shines through as she crafts a tale that challenges readers to question the nature of truth and lies in relationships. If you're in the mood for a psychological thriller with a compelling premise, including a getaway gone awry, this book is definitely worth the read!
Eh. Rock Paper Scissors nails the spooky, haunted house vibes, with a dark winter setting that adds to the creepy atmosphere. The remote, snow-covered landscape gives the whole story an eerie, isolated feel, making it easy to get sucked into the tension. Plus, the dog was a nice touch—it added some warmth in the middle of all the cold and unsettling moments. There's one major plot twist that totally got me, which was a pleasant surprise, but the ending after that felt a little weird and didn't quite land for me. And honestly, none of the characters were all that likable, which made it hard to fully connect with the story. Overall, the atmosphere was spot-on, but the characters and the ending left me wanting a bit more.
I DEVOURED this book in one day. The first few chapters might feel a bit slow and boring, but once you push through, it gets incredibly gripping. The author's skillful manipulation of the story completely transformed my perspective on the book. This will definitely be one of my top recommendations. Fairly, It took me a while for the plot to sink in because I couldn't think straight!! Such a good book. It's a must read!!
rating- 3.5/5“We're all too busy looking down to remember to look up at the stars.”
something was just off, throughout: the writing and the foreshadowing were just not it. The narrative felt very conversational to me and the fortune cookie sayings were everywhere. However, I didn't want to put the book down, so credit where it's due.
The ‘plot twist' was pretty good imo because i couldn't predict it bahaha T_T. The past and present pov is also done pretty well and while there were a few plot holes; I thought the letters were from someone else throughout so, i was pretty shocked towards the end.
Overall, creepy, decent imagery and good characterisation with a flowing storyline. You should definitely give it a chance:D
The current queen of plot twists really put the surprises into this book! One of the best last 100 pages of a book I've ever read! David N.

so i finally finished it! am i a little disappointed? yes. something i can't quite put my finger on didn't hook me in like other thrillers, even though the twist was quite good and clever, i didn't enjoy reading it as much. i may have to come back to my rating, but for now its a 3.25.
pre-reading
i need a good redemption thriller, this seems easily digestible i have confidence in this
I have wanted to read Rock Paper Scissors by Alice feeney since it was released and I was lucky enough to get an audio copy from my library on a skip the line request.
The Story is told from 2 POV Amelia's, Adam's and then a letter written on the anniversary of Adams wedding.
Amelia and Adam go to scotland on a weekend getaway that Amelia has won in a raffle. They are having marital problems and are hoping this will help.
Problem is... no one is there when they arrive and the place is full of dust. Someone has lured them there and it doesn't look like either of them will be leaving..
It was really quite atmospheric. The old chapel converted to a home is creepy and the vibe screams danger... RUN!!
I liked the audio voices for the book. They did a great job of making it extra spooky. Creaking floorboards, smiley faces in the dust... Power that gets turned off out of nowhere. No water or heat. Oh man that scares me enough without the added creeps the book gives off in spades.
It was pretty twisty and turny and the added bonus of both narrators being unreliable helped build a story you can't quite trust and I love that feeling. Like you have stepped down the stairs and missed it. That whooping in your stomach, unsettled... on edge feeling that I adore with psychological thrillers.
I loved the ending. Did not see it coming! I liked that they used Adam having prosopagnosia, face blindness, as the reason for not knowing what was going on and it highlights how hard it is to make connections with people. I found the whole thing with Adam and the author a little unsettling and I love how that played out too.
4 stars! I was really glad I got to read this one.

DNF...might pick up another time. It was just too slow for me and I don't want to skim 90% of the book
While I really enjoyed the ending to this book, the build up was infuriating. The first 75% of the book felt like repetition of how much this couple hates each other and while that is important to the story I feel like half of it could have been cut out. Much of this book felt like the author assumed the reader is kind of dumb because they repeat key information in similar ways instead of a simple call back. The end twist ended up being worth it but it took me way longer to get there than I'm used to just because it was such a drag.
don't waste your time....what a boring story with boring characters and repetitions everywhere. I have no idea what everyone sees in this book.
Bob best boy (he's a doggie)
Anyway book was ass, I hated each and one of the characters. I've never read a book with this many unanswered questions??? The only thing keeping me from 1 starring is Bob and THE twist because I personally didn't think of that until it was revealed to me :D
I really thought I had figured out who Robin was before she was revealed. Lol. Not even close. I was so worried about Bob and Oscar. I feel like Robin deserved someone better than Adam. Finding a selfish writer as a partner when you are the child of one is just sad. Also, going from being fully on Amelia's side and stressing about her inhaler to literally looking forward to an asthma attack that will take her ass out was trippy. I have never switched feelings for a character faster. I really liked this book. I like that it made you think it was going in the unreliable narrator route, but it didn't. I loved the rock, paper, and scissors on the grave. I still think Adam is a pos and doesn't deserve to be with anyone, but... it was a good read.
A great thriller lots of plot two wars and I didn't know everything that was happening until the last page and I loved that! The second half of the book had me HOOKED and I didn't want to put it down but the first half was kinda slow and hard for me to get into.
a Tale of Twists that Feel Forced
I've just completed Alice Feeney's latest book, “Good Bad Girl,” and let me tell you, it's the kind of read that keeps you up all night! On the other hand, “Rock Paper Scissors” was enjoyable, though it didn't captivate me as much as I had hoped, especially after the high of the previous read. While I appreciated the abundance of twists and turns, I didn't find myself falling head over heels for it. The narrative seemed somewhat lacking in depth, and some of the twists felt forced.
I'm the type of reader who's glued to a book when it truly grabs me, and unfortunately, this one didn't have that effect. I found it hard to ignore the moments when the plot didn't quite add up. For instance, Adam's prosopagnosia (face blindness) was intriguing, but his inability to recognize a familiar signature felt a bit off. After establishing his familiarity with the church by depicting him navigating the creaky steps and unlocking doors, the story didn't explore this further, leaving a loose end.
There were other instances that strained believability and left me puzzled, without much resolution. The ending, while somewhat redeemed by the ghostly elements for Robin, left me questioning its connection to the narrative. The trinket-filled box on the grave referenced the title “rock paper scissors,” but its presence lacked clear significance. Admittedly, I might have missed the connection.
In my assessment, this book had potential, but the author's fixation on twists seemed to lead her astray from a cohesive direction. All things considered; I'd rate it three stars.
“Rock Paper Scissors” by Alice Feeney is an enthralling exploration of the intricate web of human relationships and the hidden truths that lie beneath the surface. From the moment I delved into its pages, I was captivated by Feeney's adept storytelling and her ability to craft a suspenseful narrative that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
The story follows Amelia and Adam, a married couple in need of rekindling their connection, who embark on a seemingly innocent weekend getaway in the Scottish Highlands. As they arrive at a remote chapel, a sense of unease begins to settle in, echoed by the isolation and eeriness of their surroundings. With every passing page, the tension mounts, and Feeney masterfully plays with the readers' expectations, leaving us guessing and yearning for the truth.
Told through alternating perspectives and annual anniversary letters, the narrative unfolds like a puzzle, revealing layers upon layers of secrets. It's a testament to Feeney's skill that she keeps the suspense building while maintaining a steady pace that allows for deep character development. Amelia and Adam are not just characters; they're complex individuals with their own struggles, and as their true selves come to light, you can't help but become emotionally invested in their journey.
Now, let's talk about those plot twists. Feeney delivers them with impeccable timing, often catching you off guard and leaving you reeling from the revelations. The story takes unexpected turns, and just when you think you've figured it out, Feeney throws another curveball that leaves you second-guessing everything you thought you knew. It's a rollercoaster of emotions that keeps you engaged until the very last page.
One of the most impressive aspects of “Rock Paper Scissors” is Feeney's ability to create a palpable sense of atmosphere. The remote chapel and the surrounding landscape feel like characters themselves, contributing to the unease and tension that permeates the story. The book's setting adds a layer of claustrophobia that intensifies the characters' predicament, making the read all the more gripping.
In conclusion, “Rock Paper Scissors” is a thrilling and expertly crafted novel that takes readers on a journey through the complexities of marriage, secrets, and the lengths people will go to protect their own truths. Alice Feeney's writing is nothing short of captivating, and her ability to keep you guessing until the very end is truly commendable. If you're a fan of psychological mysteries that are packed with unexpected twists and turns, this book is an absolute must-read. Just be prepared to lose yourself in a story that will leave your heart pounding and your mind racing.
