This series is growing on me? I can't tell if I'm desensitized or it was slightly less gore-y, but that part felt more tolerable. Spicy was also spicier in some fun and creative ways. I still really don't buy the premise that vigilante murders are different than "regular" murders, but overall, I'll finish the series.
I don't love everything about these books, but I love the characters and banter and relationships enough to keep reading them.
I love the rom com part, but could personally do with a little less darkness. I don't even mind implied darkness, but I don't need as much graphic details. It was easier to read this one, knowing what I was getting into, as I flew blind into the first one.
As crazy as the trigger warnings (or what I like to call the smut menu) are on this one, Brynne came through on all of them.
If you are an audiobook fan, I highly recommend the audio for this. The voice for our main MMC is just, chefs kiss. And it's duet narration which I really enjoy. The laughing was a bit hard to listen to, but other than that, no notes.
I didn't like the main character and the banter wasn't as flowy as the first book
I have the flu. This book made it worse.
So many names and topics thrown around from book 1 without any recap. Made it hard to follow along. The book was quite literally all over the place. The audiobook narrator's did their job. Rent was due and they did the damn thing.
Couldn't preorder Scythe & Sparrow fast enough. I didn't love this as much as I did B&B, but I think it was because B&B took me totally by surprise. Still, this book delighted me.
This was awesome! I loved how their relationship turned out after not liking each other at first. I also love the little treat at the end.
Book 2 focuses on Rowan's brother Lachlan and his need to get out of criminal clean ups and Lark, Sloane's best friend. Lachlan is called in to clean up a mess Lark has made. Trouble is, they take an instant dislike to each other and he throws her in the trunk which she escapes from. This causes issues from his boss but when people in Lark's family start to die and they think it's Lachlan.. She makes the decision to marry Lachlan to protect him, Sloane and her new husband. They have to fool her family to save them all.
This one was even better than the first installment. Watching Lachlan and Lark find common ground as eventual friends and then falling for each other is adorable. All the smut is at the back end of the book. They spend their time trying to figure out who is killing off Lark's family and the ending of the book was AMAZING!!
The writing is phenomenal and I listened to the audio. The narrators were excellent. Lachlan so far, is my fav brother but we still have another brother to goooo....
5 stars
DNF at 40%. I was so bored and the characters were almost caricatures of themselves. There was very little plot and their sheer refusal to talk to each other was grating.
this was fun but it just wasn't as fun as the first book. something about the first one really hit and this just didn't have that same magic but it was still a good read!
I'm lucky that the last couple of books I've read have been so good. Leather & Lark by Brynne Weaver continues this trend, as I am completely addicted to this series! If I could give it six stars, I totally would. In fact, I enjoyed this installment even more than the first.
Leather & Lark is a riveting continuation of Weaver's masterful storytelling, filled with the perfect blend of romance, suspense, and character development. The chemistry between the protagonists is electric, and the plot twists kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. Weaver has a knack for creating complex, relatable characters who grow and evolve in ways that feel authentic and satisfying.
One of the standout aspects of this book is the way Weaver seamlessly weaves together multiple storylines, keeping the reader engaged without ever feeling overwhelmed. The world-building is top-notch, immersing the reader in a richly detailed setting that enhances the overall narrative.
The pacing of the story is just right, with a perfect balance of action and quieter, character-driven moments. Weaver's writing is both vivid and evocative, making it easy to visualize scenes and empathize with the characters' emotions. The romantic tension is palpable, and the resolution is both heartwarming and satisfying.
As a fan of the series, I was thrilled to see how Leather & Lark deepened the overarching plot while also delivering a compelling standalone story. It’s rare to find a sequel that surpasses its predecessor, but Weaver has managed to do just that with this book.
UGH, I HATE WAITING, BUT I know it will be worth it. Leather & Lark comes out right before Valentine’s Day, hint hint to all the boyfriends/husbands of fellow bookworms. Don't miss out on this addictive and enchanting read!
“Leather & Lark” is a solid continuation of the series but suffers from second book syndrome. While it's a great book in its own right, it doesn't quite reach the heights of “Butcher & Blackbird.” The chemistry and banter that made the first book so captivating feel somewhat muted here, with less spice and fewer memorable exchanges between characters.
The primary issue lies in the first 30% of the book, which heavily relies on knowledge from the previous book and its bonus chapters, making it less accessible for new readers. This installment shifts towards a murder-mystery, enemies-to-lovers mafia romance, a genre blend that offers a fresh angle but sometimes feels disjointed.
Despite these shortcomings, “Leather & Lark” delivers a compelling plot with twists and turns that will keep readers engaged. Fans of the series will appreciate the deeper dive into the underworld, even if it lacks the spark of its predecessor. Overall, it's a worthy read but doesn't quite capture the magic of “Butcher & Blackbird.”
Oh my feckin god. So good!
Enjoyed the marriage of murdery convenience.
Lachlan was unexpectedly sweet for a contract killer.
Had a lot of fun reading this, and seeing our favs from book 1.
Destiny and I buddy read Butcher & Blackbird earlier this year and both loved it. We couldn't wait for the next book to come out in the series. It was a highly anticipated release for me. I had very high expectations going into this one and I did really enjoy it just not as much as Butcher & Blackbird and I can't really explain why that is. Something was just missing in this book for me. We get everything that Butcher & Blackbird gave us in this book from the humor to the crazy messed up murdery bits but everything kind of seemed to be dialed down a notch. I still really enjoyed this book and I can't wait for the next book to be released because I need more if the Kane brothers as well as the FMC.
It was always going to be hard to live up to Butcher & Blackbird. This was pretty well written, fun, and interesting, but it certainly paled in comparison. 3.75 stars, rounded up to 4.
I'm rating it a bit high. Sloane and Rowan, top tier! Lark and Lachlan, meh. I DID love Ethal tho, she was a great side character.
This book lacked plot.
Leather & Lark did not disappoint. I devoured it, unlike some people with pizza. While it was different than Butcher & Blackbird, Brynne Weaver delivered with the second installment of the Ruinous Love series.
Lark was externally a ray of sunshine, but the glitter and glam was hiding her deleted scenes. Lark's abrupt departures to aid her avoidance were quite comical. Her traumatic adolescence seems to have stunted her emotionally and caused her to internalize and conceal herself from others.
Lachlin came off as a grumpy “asshat” but was extremely protective and caring of his loved ones. He took the time to truly see Lark and learn about her and her past. He discovered all her secrets and embraced them.
From terrible first impressions and a forced fake marriage to an earned love, Lark and Lachlin deserve each other. Their banter was everything! I also appreciated the comedic cameos from Sloane and Rowan.
I can't wait for book 3!
