Take away was two things: Mindy Kaling is exactly like me, Mindy Kaling is not that likeable. Harsh takeaway.
I actually listened to the audio version and loved it! Mindy was the narrator and made the book hilarious. It was nice hearing her background and how she made it in Hollywood. Anytime I need inspiration, this will be the book I will read/listen to.
I grabbed an audio book of this and was delighted to hear Mindy's voice narrating it! I really do not read too many memoir type books but I REALLY liked this one a lot! I was laughing often and it was short & sweet! ~Ashley
Like listening to your friend talk about her life and thoughts. A fun audiobook for running.
Esperava muuuuuito mais. Achei engraçadinho, mas pro final foi ficando preconceituoso e com pensamentos aleatórios, sem formar um capítulo direito.
Not as funny as I thought it was gong to be, but better than Ellen's book
Any day.
I like Mindy Kaling. But this book was not good. I will quote her direct from this book, “What am I reading? This is ridiculous.” Not funny. Not interesting. Too bad. It's a book I purchased new, which I don't do very often. Oh, I have to add how much I really, really dislike boring lists that just go on and on.
Love love loved! I listened to the audiobook narrated by the author. She sounded so genuine, yet fierce and determined. I hope she continues writing. I didn't want this book to end.
Quick and fun read, just what you'd expect from Kaling after watching her onscreen. Lots of photos + frank admissions of mistakes made =enjoyable peek into the upbringing and mind of a now-famous geek. Great for a break between those heavy reads that you need to set aside for a time, to digest.
Kaling's book is a fun read and written in a very conversational style, although the subjects change from paragraph-to-paragraph so often in the second half of the book like BuzzFeed listicles. If Kaling had a LiveJournal, this book is how I imagine how that LiveJournal would read.
Absolutely hilarious. I cried from laughing at a few parts. Mindy makes you feel inspired, embarrassed and completely jealous in one sentence. A must read.
I was very amused for the first 3/4ths of the book. Then I was less amused. Pretty good, pretty brainless read – if you're into that.
Hilarious! If I lived in LA I would stalk* Mindy Kaling until she became my BFF. I also appreciate the multiple Jane Austen references.
*Not really. I'm not a criminal. I just think we'd make great friends.
Funny and charming enough. Not everything appealed (why does she think rape jokes are so funny?), but on the whole, a light and enjoyable bus ride read.
Light and mostly fun (though like every essay collection, some misses). Read last year when it first came out, reread this year because I was tired of reading wedding books but didn't want anything super deep.
It took me forever to get through this audio book. The first quarter was great, I loved the stories about her childhood and her family. The book tanked for me with the bits about The Office. I even let go of my own ideas of what is funny and tried to relate to what she deems is comedy, but much of this book reads like a fangirl crush on Amy Poehler. Honestly, I could care less about what hair products Mindy thinks men should use. Sadly, this started out so great and then it was like Mindy gave up and just started rambling about whatever.
Meh.
Mindy gets closer to penning the book I wish Tina Fey wrote. Maybe it doesn't have the comedic beats per minute as Fey, but Kaling dishes. She's the friend over for an evening settling in after polishing off that 2nd bottle of wine and riffing on Romantic Comedy heroine types, potential movie pitches and favorite comedy moments. More importantly she delves into her own life and her rise to current “fame” as costar, writer and producer for The Office. She's pretty aware of the inevitable comparisons to Fey and gets it out of the way early with a FAQ starting with “Why isn't this more like Tina Fey's book?” and can only offer up “I know, man. Tina's awesome.” Mindy's pretty great too.
Minus one star because it just made me sad that I'm not and likely never will be BFFs with Mindy Kaling.
She's not pretentious about what kind of book this is and neither am I: it's light, hilarious reading, though there are some intriguing insights about female friendships and being a ~woman in Hollywood~, e.g. when she was named one of People's Most Beautiful People but when she went to the photoshoot for it they only had dresses in size 0. She cried and then got the stylist to cut open the dress she liked and sew some canvas in the back of it. Work it, girl.
Anyway, whatever, love her.
Perfect bathroom book. Short, cute (not LOL funny) chapters about Mindy Kaling's life and musings. Get it from the library - not worth full price.
Kaling was born a year before me, so this book was like listening to a good friend reminisce about her childhood and comment on contemporary culture. It's light and doesn't claim to be otherwise. Not on the caliber of Tina Fey's memoir, but I think anyone born around 1980 would get a kick out of this.
