See allI really like a good premise for a re-telling, a deaf girl falls in love with the Piper and can not be hypnotized by his song. Sounds great! Unfortunately, the story was rather eh. The art however I thought was pretty good and portrayed scenes pretty well. I really wish this was maybe 3xs longer than it was so we can get a good connection between these two main characters and some more world building.
I wish this deaf character had more of the deaf accent when she spoke. She seemed more of hard of hearing spectrum, which is great, but it isn't portrayed well. I would have liked to see more signs between her grandmother and possibly the piper to communicate and have that “secret language” bond when other people seem to ignore her or worse. Honestly, I forgot this character was deaf more than half-way through when some exposition came along to remind me.
Anyway, it was an enjoyable enough read. Check this out for yourself! ~Ashley
Great book for junior readers. I think the art in this book is just good but I believe the message of this book is powerful and is what makes the book worth to read. I love the connection sunny makes with comic books and how she slowly starts to connect with her grandfather and his retirement home friends. It has a message that kids should be addressed to honestly, especially complicated situation with loved ones. I think we can all connect to this great story. ~Ashley
Ah, I think I'm really going to like this book. This was a great start and I like dynamics and relationships going on between the main two characters especially. How interesting it can be where the deaf girl was once welcomed and everyone wanted to help her then she just kinda interrupted their schedule and became an inconvenience which lead to the others tolerance of her being bullied or bullying her themselves. Interesting also to see that her main bully (and our man character) did bully her but also became a scapegoat for students to blame and became bullied and isolated himself. AH! This isn't even the whole book! The obvious theme her is bullying but I feel this could be a blown out discussion. Is it his fault? Could she have done something more? The teacher (who sucks btw) is to be to blamed? Is bullying a part of life? He has such a kind and nice mom, why is he bullying people? Did the students that started to ignore the problem become the problem? There is such a discussion to be had here which I think would be really nice for students or parents to really take a look at this book. So, if any of you want to read this and talk to me I would be so delighted!
The story and the art work is really what make this stand out. The characters aren't exactly likable or un-likeable (they only have a couple of characteristics) because I think they were working more on the plot and story. ~Ashley
I am honestly surprised by how much i enjoyed this book. At first i was a little put off by the greaser gang. This book quickly grew on me I really loved Ponyboy and how observant he was and his point of view . I like listening to his descriptions of his friends made them very likeable. This book is a coming of age story from a character I wouldn't have expected and I highly recommend! ~Ashley
A much needed read in the 2020 realm, with an election close approaching, after listening to my first lady I was given a much needed reminder of hope. I miss the grace of this family. I enjoyed listening and learning more about Michelle and her family, her history, and her voice! I recommend this book! Michelle is a strong advocate for women's education - be sure to read [b:I Am Malala: The Story of the Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban 17851885 I Am Malala The Story of the Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban Malala Yousafzai https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1375414895l/17851885.SY75.jpg 24987300] if you enjoyed this book. - Book rec by Shay
