I grabbed an audio book of this and was delighted to hear Mindy's voice narrating it! I really do not read too many memoir type books but I REALLY liked this one a lot! I was laughing often and it was short & sweet! ~Ashley
I actually listened to the audio version and loved it! Mindy was the narrator and made the book hilarious. It was nice hearing her background and how she made it in Hollywood. Anytime I need inspiration, this will be the book I will read/listen to.
Take away was two things: Mindy Kaling is exactly like me, Mindy Kaling is not that likeable. Harsh takeaway.
Mindy is absolutely hilarious, I recommend listening to the audiobook. Her timing is impeccable and smart.
If you love The Mindy Project and Kelly Kapoor, you will love this book.
Mindy is probably one of my favorite comedy writers, her timing and wit made me LOL through work.
I hope she knows how much her fans (including me) just adore her!!
Like listening to your friend talk about her life and thoughts. A fun audiobook for running.
Esperava muuuuuito mais. Achei engraçadinho, mas pro final foi ficando preconceituoso e com pensamentos aleatórios, sem formar um capítulo direito.
This was so fun to listen, I felt like I was listening to one of my friends talk about her life while we chilled out in a coffee shop with an extra large coffee. Mindy has a lot of awkward and interesting stories and she's really, really funny. It's not a deep book, but I enjoyed listening to her stories.
Not as funny as I thought it was gong to be, but better than Ellen's book
Any day.
I like Mindy Kaling. But this book was not good. I will quote her direct from this book, “What am I reading? This is ridiculous.” Not funny. Not interesting. Too bad. It's a book I purchased new, which I don't do very often. Oh, I have to add how much I really, really dislike boring lists that just go on and on.
I love The Office, and I really love watching episodes with the commentary on it. It has given me a chance to hear a lot from the writers and producers on the show, and it has helped me gain understanding of how brilliant Mindy Kaling is. Her performance as Kelly is fun, but hearing her perspective as a writer on the show is really what I love best, and then I loved getting to see her shine on The Mindy Project. All that to say that I really enjoyed reading Kaling's behind-the-scenes peek at not only her work on The Office but also her journey getting there. And I appreciate her frankness, her delightful humor, and her reliability. Love this book.
This originally appeared at The Irresponsible Reader as part of a post about both of her audiobooks (at least so far).

These are technically two books – and you can identify different themes in each, but really, they could be one book, so let's talk about them at the same time. These are collections of humorous essays – some autobiographical, some not – from the pen of writer/actress Mindy Kaling. Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? covers her childhood and early career, while Why Not Me? focuses on more adult concerns, and her post-The Office career.
I thought the stories about her personal life and career entertaining, and well-told. But the other essays tended to be more creative and more amusing. But I found myself grinning or chuckling throughout. I've liked her before, but these books made me a fan.
My gut tells me that this is too brief, and I should say more – but I'm not sure what to get into. If you're a fan of her TV work, or like intelligent and funny women (who can write), these are good reads.
Kaling is, naturally, the best narrator possible for these books – and probably many others (really, think Stephanie Plum as read by Kaling!). I think I liked the performance she gave for Is Everyone a little more, it felt less practiced? More energetic? I'm really not sure, but I wondered several times while listening to Why Not Me? why I didn't like her narration as much. I could ‘t put my finger on it – but, it doesn't matter, she was great with both. Just slightly less great.
Funny, heart-felt, maybe a little inspiring – these essays hit the spot.
Love love loved! I listened to the audiobook narrated by the author. She sounded so genuine, yet fierce and determined. I hope she continues writing. I didn't want this book to end.
Quick and fun read, just what you'd expect from Kaling after watching her onscreen. Lots of photos + frank admissions of mistakes made =enjoyable peek into the upbringing and mind of a now-famous geek. Great for a break between those heavy reads that you need to set aside for a time, to digest.
Kaling's book is a fun read and written in a very conversational style, although the subjects change from paragraph-to-paragraph so often in the second half of the book like BuzzFeed listicles. If Kaling had a LiveJournal, this book is how I imagine how that LiveJournal would read.
DNF. Maybe I would enjoy this more if I hadn't listened to the audiobook. The chapters feel so disjointed and I haven't laughed out loud once.
Absolutely hilarious. I cried from laughing at a few parts. Mindy makes you feel inspired, embarrassed and completely jealous in one sentence. A must read.
Funny and I just wanted to be friends with her. I think we have way too much in common.
I was very amused for the first 3/4ths of the book. Then I was less amused. Pretty good, pretty brainless read – if you're into that.
Hilarious! If I lived in LA I would stalk* Mindy Kaling until she became my BFF. I also appreciate the multiple Jane Austen references.
*Not really. I'm not a criminal. I just think we'd make great friends.
