The author asked me to give this book a chance. I did, but I was very disappointed. The book starts out as a really bad porno movie and never gets better. The characters are never fully explained, except for the fact they all have sex. But it's not romantic sex, it just... well, think bad porno movie - like I said. The storyline never develops and left me somewhat confused. Honestly, I threw this book in the recycle bin. I would never share this book with friends or family. I would be too embarrassed.
It's been a few years since I read a book by Maeve Binchy. I love the way she brings all the characters together as if they are part of one large family. This one was just as good, if not better than previous books.
I feel the main character in this story was Ania, the young Polish girl. We first meet Ania as she is trying to find a way to earn money, while she speaks mostly Polish, and is new to Dublin. Along the way, we get to know more about Ania's history and while doing so, we meet many other characters. Another main character, and probably my favorite is Clara. Clara is a divorced mother of two girls, and she has some attitude. I felt I could relate to her character and events throughout the story.
The fun thing about Maeve Binchy books is if you have read any previous books, you will read again about many previous characters. However, you don't have to have read the previous books to understand where they fit, since she blends them in so perfectly.
Maeve Binchy is one of several authors I love and one of a few by whom I keep all the books I've read. I recommend this book to anyone who loves a great story.
I was given this book by a friend. She was in one of those mail clubs which sends you items on a regular basis. If you forget to return the card telling them you don't want an item, they send it. She didn't have time to send it back, so she just paid for it, and kept it. Since she wasn't vegetarian, she never read it, so she gave it to me.
I like a cookbook which has more than just recipes. Crescent Dragonwagon writes stories about food. She has one chapter about greens. I wouldn't have known the greens from my home garden beets could be so tasty if I hadn't read this book. I recommend it to all healthy cooks.
This book is one of the best vegetarian cookbooks I've ever read/used. The recipes are all very simple, and I had most staple items in my pantry. I simply picked up a couple items for any given recipe. My teenage son and I taste tested most of the recipes and determined we will be using several of them many times again.
I selected this book from a shared bookshelf at work. I didn't have any doubts about whether I'd like this book or not. I did. As in most [a:Nora Roberts 625 Nora Roberts http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1265820113p2/625.jpg] books, I was hooked from the first page. It took me longer to read, since I was only reading it at work on my lunch time. When I was close to the end, I took it home, so I could read the last couple chapters quickly. The characters in this book came to life in my mind. They were developed in a way which almost made me believe this was a true story.I related to the main character, Phoebe, since we are both single-parents. And I'm certain every single mother wishes for a boyfriend as devoted and loving as Duncan. This is a wonderful, feel-good story.
I enjoyed this book. The story captured me from the beginning and definitely climaxed. A lieutenant who had been given desk duty due to some previous event, was brought back to action when a serial killer began terrorizing the town. The characters in the book were written with real-life descriptions. The only part I struggled with was the many acronyms used throughout the book. I will be looking forward to reading other books by this author.
I love Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum novels, but didn't realize this would have similar humor. The humor was much cheesier though and it wasn't as good reading. I was a little confused at the beginning of the story. I wasn't real keen on the narrator's voices. However, the story was cute. I'll probably read more of the “Full” series in the future.
I really liked this story. I wanted to read something by J.C. Robb, and finally had my opportunity. I actually listened to this as a book on CD. I enjoyed each of the characters, but have to say, I wasn't so keen on the narrator voices (many of the characters sounded old and not very intelligent).
Good, short story. This story tells the history of a vineyard and the family bonds formed and growing strong alongside the grape vines.
Since this was read as an audio book, I had a difficult time at the beginning catching on to the accent, and storyline. However, I kept listening and in no time, I was captivated and wanted to know more. Now I want to read the first and more of this series.
Tea Time has the owner and assistant of the detective agency dealing with a couple small detective jobs. But I liked that the story also gave insight into the ladies home lives. I also like books which are set in countries other than my own.
At the beginning, I was getting lost while the author was detailing various characters. But before too long, I began to see a story unfold and from there to the end, I was part of all the characters lives. The story takes place in a town outside of Rockford, Illinois. It was great for me to relate to details about the local area.
I already gave the audio DVD's to my sister to read.
Although the story was decent, the book didn't focus on one subject. SPOILER?: The four sisters all have men in their lives and they are all types. The abuser, the divorced, the one who stays through thick and thin and the gay friend. It was a fast read, but I felt it was missing so much.
This was one of the best stories I've read in a long time. I remember why John Grisham is such a highly regarded author. He writes directly to the point. From the moment the story begins, I felt like I understood the characters, and the locations.
Gray Mountain is located in the Appalachians. Samantha Kofer is a lawyer who begins working for a non-profit clinic in Virginia after events in her life take her away from New York City.
This story had many unexpected events, and I enjoyed it to the end.
I wasn't sure about this story when it started. It seemed like it was a similar tale, but as the story progressed, I realized it was quite different. After several minor twists, it ended with me wanting to read more by this author. I would recommend it.
This was not a book I would typically want to read (or listen to on CD), however I was glad I did. I knew some of the days documented, and some of the events, however I did not know much of the details mentioned. I also liked the mention of further reading at the end of each event.
This is a great book for anyone interested in history, or just wants to know more about how the US changed over the years.
I love cookbooks. I especially love old cookbooks with recipes I can alter to my personal tastes.
This book belonged to my Aunt Jean. She passed away last year, and her husband, my Uncle Vic, allowed me to have several of her cookbooks.
This book has a chapter on Menu Making. Several of the menus are meat-free.
Just a few of the many other chapters are: How to Buy Food, Table Setting and Service, Carving, Vegetarian Dishes, French Recipes, Food for Invalids, High Altitude Cooking, Cooking at the Table, The Friends Who Honor Us, and Wine Seasons Find Food.
This book also has some very interesting illustrations, and a handful of full-color photos.
I'm marking this book as read. If I put it as currently reading, it would never leave that category. I will read it over and over and over.
Another few notes:
The binding on this book is a little worn, but the book is in very good condition.
My aunt pasted a newspaper clipped recipe for Tomato Juice Sauce on the inside cover. Across from it, is a clipping listing some appliances and their “typical operating costs”. The clipping does not have a date, but I'm guessing it is from the 1960's. Here are some of the costs listed:
Coffee Maker 2.8 cents per 30 minutes
Dishwasher 5.6 cents per hour
Frying Pan 3.5 cents per hour
Solid state, color TV .67 per hour
Clock 80 cents per hour
Sewing machine 35 cents per hour
This was one of the very first books I remember reading as a child. I think I loved the pictures as much as the story. I read it so much, I literally wore off the front cover. My father re-covered it with cardboard, and I drew my own illustration on the front.
I don't know what happened to that original book, however I recently purchased a copy. I still love the story AND pictures.
I didn't know what to expect when I started this book. I really liked it. I think this is a great story for both religious and non-religious readers. I went through many emotions while the story progressed. I do have to admit, since I “read” it as an audio book, I was able to fast forward through one part which was a little too graphic for me. But it was just a short forward and I'm certain it didn't change the story for me.
Oh, I am so excited. I won this book in a goodreads giveaway. The description makes me think I will really like this book.
The beginning of this book started a little slow. But once I began reading, I didn't want to stop. Delia is a wife and a mother, who is dying from Breast Cancer. She is an advice columnist, and has written some reference books referred to as The Household Guides. As she is deciding what needs to be done in her personal life before she dies, she realizes others might also like a reference guide. She begins writing the Household Guide to Dying. During her final months of life, she has some previous events on which she desires to reflect.
There were several very sad and traumatic events which made me cry. Delia seems a little crazy at times, but I am not sure I would have handled being in her situation any better. The decorating of the coffin (casket) was very humorous.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has cancer, anyone who knows someone with cancer, and anyone who just loves a unique story. >/p>
I have always liked Chelsea Handler. Now, I think I love her! Although the audio book is not narrated by her, I was able to think of her and hear her voice throughout the entire story. I laughed so much during at a time when it was definitely needed as the best medicine. Since I listened to this in my car, I'm certain passing drivers must have wondered what was making me laugh. The sad thing is, I could relate to many events in her life.
I already purchased another book by her and can't wait to read/hear more of her antics.
I did not know this was a sequel(?) to another book (or more). But I believe any book should be able to be read without knowing a previous storyline. I did not like this story. It started out strange, which intrigued me, but then just went bad.. boring!
I was a little worried this story was so long, and about a country doctor. But it was definitely not typical. I enjoyed almost every minute of the story and cant wait to get my hands on another by this author.
This story has a soft beginning and yet is a great story. I was engaged through the entire book and anxiously awaited each new adventure. Although it is set in the 1800's, several events, if twisted, could take place any time. The tale is mostly about two women finding fossils and their daily lives. I listened to this story on CD. I will definitely share and recommend to others.
This was a very good story. There were several times when I thought the author did a great job of making it seem very real. Too many stories with children are based on abuse and I was happy to find one very different.
I'm not a huge fan of the Bourne stories. I find them to be quite unbelievable, and it makes them seem almost humourous to me. But I will share my copy, as I know others will appreciate.
