One of my favourites ever since i was a teenager, I occasionally reread this because of how much of an impact it made in my life
I liked this book much more when I was in middle school than I do now as a college student. - 1 May 2009
I think a lot of this book is cute. It really is. I get a bit more bored now reading it than I did when I was a high school aged kid, but I suppose that's more to do with me than the book itself.
I enjoyed this book very much because it discussed feelings and experiences of a young adult trying to find his place in life. The quote “We accept the love we think we deserve.” from this book has stuck with me ever since I had read it. You can pick this book up from the Colona Public Library! ~Ashley
I read this book in middle school and I can honestly say it was one of my favorites. I read through it quickly, even reading during lunch. It was so enjoyable and it was nice to read about the journeys of being a teen while i was just entering my teen years.
I feel as though this is one of the few books where the movie was better than the book. Maybe it's because the format of the book (series of letters) was something I was not a fan of, but I don't get the hype. It's a great story, but I didn't like reading it the way it was written.
4.5 ⭐
Maybe would have been higher if I had read this in high school. Also why didn't I read this in high school...?
read this and watched the movie and it is so insanely different yet they both pull off this complex and dark teenage story so well. really recommend both
Summary: This book is written as a series of letters written by the fictional Charlie to his pen pal. He writes about his experiences as a high school student getting over the death of a friend, making new friends, and meeting a mentor. Charlie has a dark secret that he has repressed for a long time, however, and it is threatening to come out.
This novel deals with some heavy themes such as drug and alcohol abuse, sex and sexual abuse, and mental illness. It's definitely a hard read, and I felt that it was especially so when I read it as an adult because it was just really sad to imagine children going through the things that the characters had to face. That's not to say you shouldn't read it; just have your tissues ready if you do!
Didn't stand out to me and I did not like the format. Better for younger audiences.
When Stephen Chbosky wrote this book, it was surprisingly good that he aimed to address themes like sex, drugs, and abuse issues (physical and psychological) that can occur with teenagers.
The story is narrated through letters, and the first-person perspective allows us to constantly understand the character's feelings. However, at times, like the character himself, it becomes confusing to comprehend why the character acts the way he do. This confusion is resolved towards the end of the book, making everything fall into place.
In our lives, there are moments when we are like wallflowers—people come and go, some not sharing the moments we would like, and others we can't get along with, even among our close ones. Often, we accept the love we think we deserve. And we live by the others, not ourselves. However, we can always change. There's no perk of being a wallflower when you start to not live you life and missing the good opportunities to be infinity.
One of the best books I've ever read for sure. Sad, wholesome, hopeful, dreamy. Charlie is such a great character that leaves a very deep message to those who struggle socially but also those who carry demons inside or simply are figuring life out. Reading only letters as the formatting made it special. We don't choose where we come from, but we can choose where we go from there.
my new favorite book because what the hell that was so amazing and so good and i didn't even expect the ending to go that way???? i'm feeling so many emotions, happy, sad, nostalgic, and present. best best book of the year so far.
