Really mad at myself for only buying the first book in the series because I need to know what happens next. It was impossible to put it down, I've lost sleep two nights in a row because of it!
The only thing about this book I honestly didn't care for was the love “triangle” between Avery and two of the Hawthorne brothers. To me it wasn't even a triangle when one of them was showing obvious interest being charming and attentive; while the other was lurking in the background staring at her “with intense, grey eyes” every once in a while 😂 Also it felt like the brothers started caring about her too much too soon. Like I get starting to care about someone after a while, but declaring them as family and saying you'd die for them after a couple weeks? Seemed unlikely to me, especially given the circumstances of her being there.
I loved every second of the journey of this book! It was a brilliant opening novel to a young adult series and I felt like it's been ages since I've enjoyed such a journey. The fast paced writing left me with no time to really make guesses and I love that I really never predicted the twists. I love all the characters and the first mystery was such a fun ride. I'm already grabbing the second book and can't wait to read what's next. Honestly can't believe this hasn't been more hyped. I haven't enjoyed a YA series this much since The Hunger Games. Perfect if you love YA series, want to be transported back to being a teen, and a good mystery.

who mind you is dead. She was almost disgustingly jealous of a deceased girl. Who ended up being a manipulative little shit anyway!
I must give credit where credit is due, though. Xander had me 120% fooled. If you asked me which brother had been manipulating the game the entire time, I would not even have put him on the list. I was in his corner the whole time. I absolutely adored his character. Although the youngest, he was undeniably the most brilliant Hawthorne brother. Hats off to you, Alexander!
I read this book in pretty much one sitting, currently I am reading the sequel. I think this book is a great mystery which would be perfect for middle schoolers. Especially for those curious kids. I loved the characters and the storyline.

Okay I didn't have high expectations for this book until my friend told me to read it and I finally decided to find out what it was about. In the beginning, ngl, still didn't have high hopes but, holy shit how this blew me away.
THE PLOT TWIST, THE CHARACTERS, THE DETAIL IN THE PUZZLES BRO HOLY
This blew my expectations out of the park, into the road, down the street, on the next flight to Paris to get a massage for free.
I can tell the puzzles were a pain in the ass to write but probably fun to come up with. And I legit feel so much for all of these characters despite only having read the first book.
Miss girl, miss Jennifer Lynn Barnes... WHAT DID U PUT IN THIS BOOK AND WHERE CAN I GET SOME (dw I will read the sequel at some point...)

A clean YA with interesting characters and a mystery to solve.
Not usually a fan of cliffhangers but this one will lead into the next book nicely.
This one is interesting enough to keep my head out of things. I was hoping all that build up would lead to more but guess what, it's on the next book. Anyway, I enjoyed reading this one, but I think I want more riddles and games than what I was anticipating.
This book in one word: FUN. Usually puzzle mystery books are not my favorite but this book had me hooked within the first few chapters. This would make the perfect book for a book club with so many layers and unanswered questions to unpack throughout the entire book!
i loved this but my only gripe was it was a bit slow in the beginning and hard to get into but it was so worth it and i loved the story and i am gonna definitely continue in the series
Took me a while to get into the story and it seeming almost too focused on romance off the bat, but that quickly changed and I loved the entire process, puzzles, and mystery.
talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before, unafraid to reference or not reference, put it in a blender, shit on it, vomit on it, eat it, give birth to it. THIS BOOK IS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, that was incredible! Probably one of the best books I've ever read. Just enough suspense/mystery without being too scary or creepy. Just a sprinkle of romance to keep it soft and sweet. Her attention to detail with the puzzles made the story come to life. Mindblowing! Incredible! I can't wait to keep reading the series!
The beginning of the book was promising, but after the will was revealed, I found the world-building to be somewhat dull. The atmospheric setting could have been crafted more effectively with the use of words. However, the book managed to regain my interest towards the end by introducing more intriguing puzzles. This made me realize that it lacked the quantity of puzzles I had anticipated. I longed for additional dark and atmospheric depictions of the property and its libraries. The scenes were too brief and left me wanting more, but not in an exciting manner. I certainly desired more descriptive details.
Ok well I did not go into this thinking I'd love this book- but I did!! I am not the type to read trilogies, usually just a novel type of girl, but I decided to give this book a try since the premise sounded rly fun and I'm a sucker for those.
I heard some people complain about the mc being lacklustre and having no substance, but I disagree. Yes she didn't have major character growth but I think she has time considering there's a few more books left + she is a teen. Idk about you guys but I wouldn't expect much from a teen (and she already imo provided effort and value into all of the riddles that were in the book).
The characters all were lovable imo and were actually identifiable- I didn't have a single character in the book where I questions ‘wait who is that again?'
Lastly, the four brothers????? MHMHMHMHHMM yes

Я эмоционально опустошена тем, какая же это халтура. Происходящее в книге не вызвало во мне столько эмоций как осознание того, что эта книга существует и кому-то нравится. И мой единственный вопрос - почему ее еще не отменили?
На бедную, но умную девушку сваливается внезапное наследство от неизвестного богатого человека. Чтобы получить его, Эйвери нужно прожить год в поместье вместе с огромной семьей этого человека в другом штате. И выясняется, что почивший глава семейств очень любил оставлять загадки своим четырем внуке. А Эйвери любит разгадывать загадки.
Сюжет, если его таковым можно назвать, является смешением кучи идей, чтобы читатель не мог заскучать, но на практике это превращается в игру “я видел это здесь”. Серьезно, от “Дневник принцессы” до “Достать ножи”.
Отходя от клише, Эйвери не является никому из семьи тайным родственником. Ей предоставляют охрану, менеджера и даже учат как вести себя на публике. Так еще и девушка умна не по годам (нам дают целую сцену о том, как она решает аж два раза тест по физике, который специально сделан супер-мега сложным), что может пойти не так?
Да потому что ничего из этого не работает в угоду сюжету. Охранник пропадает когда надо, а иногда и сам ввязывает ее в опасные игры. На публике за ней не следят, поэтому она успевает собрать пресс-конференцию, но СМИ все равно забудут о чем было ее выступление. Сцен в школе практически нет, нас лишь знакомят с парой персонажей и “офигенным блочным расписанием”, что на самом деле равняется “я всегда свободна”. Про безопасность на этой территории я вообще молчу. Может дедушка тоже умер не своей смертью? Хотя я честно ждала, что дедушка конце книги покажется живым со снимками, как он за ними все время следил... Но об этом позже.
Перед автором стояла сложная задача показать целую семью с разными ветвями и прислугой, чтобы мы их запомнили и могли отличить. Спойлер: ничего подобного.
Братья одинаковые до ужаса: бросаются пафосными фразами, придумывают героине разные прозвища, ведут себя вальяжно. Кто-то пытается держать ее при себе, кто-то отстранить, где-то там образуется любовный (?) треугольник кринжа, строящийся на том, что все братья просто джентльмены и заботятся о героине в трудную минуту.
Сама Эйвери от героини любого другого YA отличается тем, что знает значение слова “объективное”. Занавес. У нее драма с умершей мамой, с которой у них были мечты о путешествиях и игра “У МЕНЯ ЕСТЬ СЕКРЕТ”, ДА ГОСПОДИ Я ЗАПОМНИЛ УЖЕ. Сказано, что сама героиня не тратила ни цента, лишь хотела помочь одному бродяге, ведь больше у нее никого нет. Спойлер: также она будет говорить и про единственную подругу, и про единственную сестру. Покупка платьев в счет не входит, потому что не по ее прихоти. И как бы издатели не выделяли огромную сумму денег в аннотации, она никоим образом не участвует в сюжете. Героиня мечтала об учебе по своим способностям, но эта богатство будто сковало, ограничило персонажа (на самом деле ограничил автор, чтобы показать какая она хорошая и не транжира), поэтому в школе мы встретим только пару нпс персонажей и услышим как прекрасно блочное расписание, что, видимо, означает “я свободна всегда”.
Остальные персонажи просто никакие, они только “жадно желают наследство”. Как обычно нашли притянутую за ушу парочку нетрадиционной ориентации. В общем, похвалить могу лишь линии с Макс и Либби. С первой раскрылась тема односторонней дружбы, но после этого о ней ни сном, ни духом. Со второй подняли важную тему про то как трудно забыть манипулирующего парня.
И наконец-то мы дошли до самых проблемных мест. Я одна считаю, что преследование богатым стариком девочки - это полный кринж и за это нужно сажать? Тем более со снимками. Тем более, что у них был один разговор, где она назвала своего имя. Тем более, что он видел как их семья бедствует, но ничем не помогал. Эйвери всю последнюю головоломку задается вопросом "почему он выбрал рандомную девушку по имени", а потом это превращается в "а, ну если ты хотел объединить мной свою семью, то ладно!".И он же вырастил женщину, которая без тени сомнения показывается перед сыном и посторонней девушкой головой в ванне с пеной. И которая разгуливает по дому в откровенных халатиках.И, конечно же, мой любимый подсюжет с Эмили, вскрывающийся под конец книги. Тема с "яркой девушкой, которая хотела все и сразу" набила такую оскомину, что мне пришлось проверить дату написания книги. Кроме того, что это избито, автор не удосуживается показать почему мы или кто-то другой должны любить эту Эмили. Она была той еще стервой и проблемы с сердцем никак не оправдывают ее поступки. Автор пытается поставить перед фактом, как за одно событие каждый будет нести вину сквозь года, но это не чувствуется. Возможно, потому что те же самые тупицы впутываются снова в любовный треугольник? После ее смерти глава семьи лишил всех наследства, из-за чего один член семьи теперь вынужден бомжевать, я предполагаю? Отличная семья, всем советую.
Я окончательно запуталась, что пыталась показать автор. Находчивость персонажей в сложных играх не показывает их умными, потому что сами загадки не ведут к чему-то интересному или запоминающемуся. Деньги развращают? Ну, с таким анамнезом я бы все же потратилась на семейного психолога: “Мой дедушка подкладывает письма с поучительными пословицами и строит игры вокруг моей травмы. Скажите, доктор, кто из нас плохой?”.
predictable. i started the book LAST YEAR and finished just now with like.. 4 chapters remaining. could've been shorter imho
Just finished the book and... I'm utterly obsessed.
I cannot count the amount of LITERAL CHILLS the plot twists gave me.
