Dnf 55% I was expecting riddles and puzzles but unfortunately this was just boring. Not awful just boring.
The brothers all melded into one (didn???t care about the romance subplot) and none of the characters made much of an impression other than Libby who I disliked, and Max who was annoying with the fake swear words. If it had been a standalone I might have persevered, but with a cliffhanger there didn???t seem much point.
The book is fast-paced and full of suspense, but it's not the most complex or thought-provoking novel out there. The characters are a bit one-dimensional and the plot can be predictable at times. That being said, it's still a great book to pick up if you're looking for something light and easy to read.
Overall, “The Inheritance Games” is a fun and engaging read for young adult mystery fans who want something that doesn't require too much brainpower. It's not the best novel out there, but it's definitely worth checking out if you're in the mood for something entertaining and lighthearted.
Um livro YA muito divertido e bem escrito, com muitos mistérios bem costurados. Delicinha.
“Sometimes things that appear very different on the surface are actually exactly the same at their core.”
I have heard nothing but great things about this book and more specifically, this series.
This was such a fun read. It was chaotic and had me laughing at the most silliest things. I can see myself in a lot of these characters, (minus the great wealth, of course). The idea that someone like Avery and Libby, who struggle with money, horrible men and only surviving by pay check to pay check, becoming billionaires overnight was such a cool idea to me. It felt like I was reading the Underdogs finally succeeding.
It was so much fun trying to figure out the puzzles and clues along with the characters. It made me feel apart of the story.
I think it's always good to go back to your roots with Young Adult because there's something so nostalgic and comforting about the genre. It's easy to get swept up in the daunting realism of other genres so it was nice for me to feel some escapism in a world that would never include me whilst still having real feelings brought into it.
The ending? I actually gasped
I am super excited to read the other books in this series and see what comes next.
Espectacular.
That was a cliffhanger! The games were creative and the writing was well paced so it felt like the same thrill as the characters. On to the next!
I can't list a single personality trait other than “stubborn” for any of these characters, they're so incredibly boring and the story is just as slow. For a mystery involving a massive fortune, attempts at murder, missing heirs and tragic pasts, I have zero interest in reading any of the other books in this series. Why was this so popular and highly rated??
The puzzles and treasure hunt should've been the best part of this but it was like a shitty escape room plot.
A small list of major issues with this one:
- The attempted murderer had zero motive or anything to gain for the attack, and the mom was involved but gets off with no punishment?
- The mystery of Emily is so boring and lame, I don't even understand the point of this side of the plot.
- “Henry” aka Toby is barely mentioned and supposed to be the big twist yet you don't care about him at all or even worse, hardly remember how he's supposed to be involved.
- The dialogue is awful. Teenagers do not talk like that. In fact, no one talks like that. Listening to the audiobook made this 10x worse.
- The love triangle is boring. All three characters have no personality so I don't give a single crap who wins in the end and it seems like the main character doesn't either since she appears to settle for the one she didn't get rejected by.
Overall, I'm staying away from any book that's popular on social media. It keeps disappointing.
i still want to know what grade Avery got on that test, that's the real mystery here!
I'm glad that I wasted time only on one book in this series. The only positive thing about it is that it has short chapters. Everything else was so boooooring.
Avery - your usual special snowflake that knows it all. Hawthorn brothers - brought me some weird flashbacks of F4 from Boys Over Flowers. Why weird - because there is little in common with them, but I was reminded about that kdrama nonetheless.
As a reader, I expected to solve the puzzles along with mc, but there was nothing for me to do. All answers to any mystery or riddle was right on the next page. This novel haven't build up to anything.
I've read endings of the second and third book and I'm happy that I missed all the drama and Santa Barbara of who is who's son/daughter.
With the trilogy ending I had the same issue that I did with ready player two - the world issues don't go away if you throw money at them. Even if there are gazillions of dollars.
Okay. Wow. So very impressed by this, was thinking the YA would be a turn-off for me but this was so much better than I ever could have imagined. And so much different than I imagined. So many different things happening and coming together and then when you think it all makes sense they throw something new in. On to book 2, I suppose.

For all practical purposes orphaned 17-year-old Avery inherits a gazillion dollars, has to move into her late benefactor's huge mansion for a year where his toxic and dysfunctional family makes her life difficult...This was such an interesting premise but Barnes' simply can't deliver: Avery herself “feels” a lot younger than 17. She is self-centred, insecure, naïve and while she is supposed to look clever, the “riddles” in this book are mostly either trivial or so obscure that she has to be helped by her male love interests between two of which she simply doesn't decide.Jameson, Grayson - afore-mentioned love interests - aren't even graced with any kind of discernible character. Both young men are just walking stereotypes: Jameson is the young prankster clown and Grayson is the dark, brooding, elegant gentleman. Their siblings, Nash the motor-cycling “lonesome cowboy”, and Xander, basically a clone of Jameson, are as interesting to read about as a brick wall. All the other characters are similarly shallow and just, barely serve their respective purpose but nothing more. No, the head of security doesn't have any secret, he doesn't have to dramatically save his charge (driving a car doesn't count!), he just lurks in the background, probably hoping (in vain) to grow a personality. There are tons of loose ends: Why did the would-be assassin do what they did? What was their accomplice's motivation? I cannot ask any other questions to avoid spoilers but there were so many possibilities and so saddeningly few were actually realised. The very, very short chapters feel like lightly-connected thoughts that butterfly-like sailed through Barnes' mind. Light and pretty - and devoid of substance. This novel is so fast-paced, it doesn't allow for a single moment of reflection. We're just pulled into a wild ride that I always felt invested in enough to see its conclusion but I was thoroughly disappointed at pretty much every step of my reading journey.Especially, since up to about 80% of the book, nothing much actually happens - mostly Avery settling in, Libby, her inconsequential sister, behaving weirdly and inconsistently, the deceased's family acting like caricatures of rich people and some minor riddles - only afterwards some more interesting things happen.Last but not least, this book feels extremely young adult - yes, I'm not part of the target audience but from time to time I do enjoy a good young adult book but this one felt more than that: It felt just plain immature. Five teens and a multimillion-dollar inheritance... what could possibly go wrong?
Avery's biggest hope for her future is to finish high school and be awarded scholarships so she can attend college. All of that changes when she's contacted about the estate of Tobias Hawthorn — a man she's never met and who has left her the majority of his estate over his children and four grandsons. This far from solves her problems. She quickly discovers that the Hawthorn family is far from ordinary. They play to win, and her life could be in danger.
This was a fun, sometimes quirky mystery that's different from any other I've read to date. There were a lot of characters to keep tabs on, though, and I kept mixing up two of the grandsons. The pacing was great and I loved the short chapters. It kept the story in motion. Unfortunately, I found the conclusion underwhelming, especially where the plot began to drag toward the end. Still, the book was a lot of fun and I'm hooked enough that I want to continue the series.
well... this took me a lot longer than i thought it was going to.
in all fairness, i went on tour in the middle of reading this so whatever.
this was fun!! i have to be honest, it didn't draw me in immediately and it definitely had it slow parts but when it was good, it was REALLY good.
i have a few qualms, one of which being that the characters did not feel like real people in the slightest. our main character, avery, probably felt the most real out of all of them but even so, she still fell victim to a couple of corny, YA-heroine one liners that did NOT help her likability.
everyone else though? they had an aesthetic and a single character trait (maybe two if you were a love interest) and that was that.
again, it was fun! but it was like sugary cereal, you absolutely cannot have it all the time or else it'll clog your arteries lol
i'm also just a sucker for the affluenza aesthetic. love me some rich people murder mysteries!!
I wish I could read this again for the first time. A really fun read full of mysteries and puzzles. I couldn't put it down because I wanted answers.
4 and a half stars
uhm that was AMAZING. the mystery and the constant twists, fantastic. can't wait to read the second book.
This book deserves more than 5 stars. Absolutely amazing, I can't wait to start the second one!!!
The ending was seemingly anticlimactic, but I loved the game part of it :) intriguing
I liked how this book was full of secrets and you don't know until the end what exactly happened or why. As it is a young adult there has to be some romantic line, but not as important and strong as in other books. On the other hand those mysteries and riddles around the inheritance was just perfect. Can't wait for the other two books in the series.
