This book is heartbreaking, moving, and raw. I honestly had no clue what to expect with this book and stopped on multiple occasions to give my heart a rest. The challenges faced by Nuri and Afra grab ahold of you and make you question how war could ever be so prevalent in our world. This book is a dedication to the all the men, women, and children who are Nuri and Afra. If you read this book, plan to shed some tears. It's wonderfully written but so very heartbreaking.
Took .5 star off due to sometimes feeling lost by the jump between past and present in the audiobook. I had to replay parts a few times to understand what was happening.
Honestly in some ways I am really unsure what to even say about this book. It was not that great
Beautiful story set in a tragic environment. This story was very engaging and I recommend for everyone. It gives very visual descriptions of the locations visited in the story also.
This was a great read! It was horrifying and heart breaking but also hopeful. After reading that the author drew from her experiences and stories from volunteering for a UNICEF refugee center, it came together why these characters and their stories seemed so real. It certainly wasn't a “feel good” story but one that made you really think (and continue to think after finishing it). I loved how the author played with words as a transition from present to past, and how swapping back and forth helped piece together the inevitable storyline. Highly recommend!
Finally got to finish my work read today after being off for ten days with covid! This was as glorious as everyone says it is, and the ending had me almost crying at work which was embarrassing but regardless incredible
A heartbreaking story of Syrian refugees finding their way to the UK.
Nuri and Afra lose their son Sammy, and are chased out of their home in Aleppo. They head west, seeking refuge from the violence brought upon them by the Asad regime. What a heartbreaking story of love, love lost, and love found. Such humanity.
A deep and profound story that depicts the resilience of humans when they face their darkest hour. Although I have never been in such saddening situations each word hit a note that resonated with me deeply. It has opened my eyes to a world that I'm sheltered from and a world that I would have otherwise not been aware of. I'm thankful for I have a new understanding of the world I live in.
