i started this some months ago but just couldn't get into it after how much i loved the agony of the first book. maybe i'll come back to this later.
The first half of this one is worse than the worst, the second half is better, so all in all, it ends up at 3.5 rating just like the other.
For much of these, it's hard to understand the gods and their motives. This one provides more context but it feels as though one is complex and nuanced, and the other is a caricature of evil. It doesn't quite match at points to me. I did appreciate how the storylines tied up.
There's nothing mindblowing about this series, but it was a fairly quick read that did feel unique in a place where many fantasy novels are basically the same plots over and over.
The first book, Divine Rivals, was really good. This one felt slow and uninteresting. It could've been abbreviated and added to Divine Rivals to make a satisfying stand-alone. It would've had great pacing and explained all the backstory for both the main characters and the divine beings. I really liked the story; I wish it had been given more care in its telling.
I enjoyed this story. There were a few quick moments that I didn't feel fully engaged, but then the storyline brought me back. I'd recommend.
now this. THIS. is a duology worthy of the hype i've seen it get. i wouldn't consider myself a fan of wwii stories or just war-focused stories in general but this one just hits different yk. iris and roman are probably one of my favorite book ships ever, probably because even if their romance is on the subtler side. i don't typically love historical fiction but i do love magical realism, and i know a lot of people were complaining about how this focused more on the gods and magic side of the story compared to the previous book but honestly that's why i loved this one so much more. ugh. so brilliant.
Pre-Reading Updates: had to go to 2 targets to find this y'all i better not be disappointed!!
Really enjoyed this. Wish there had been more about the news articles that were written.
3.5 rounded down; I enjoyed the first half and then the last half broke me and I did not enjoy ;-; After all that death, I was hoping a happy ending for Forest and Sarah ;-; the rest of it seemed very anticlimactic, and I was confused with Enva's presence in this book -- she barely partook in anything and ran along I think my expectation for this book was too high because the first book was really good!!
I absolutely loved this duology! I laugh, cried, and nearly had a heart attack. Forest and Sarah's death hurt a lot

The amnesia was a spicy addition and many moments had me on my seat of will they won't they get caught. I still don't feel convinced of the whole reason the war happened. The villain is pretty one dimensional, no arc for him at all.
4,5 stars
just because, I don't even know why, it took me 3 months to read this sequel ?!? but I enjoy every word, every chapter and every letters
Ruthless Vows is the second half of Rebecca Ross' duology beginning with Divine Rivals. A romantasy set in a fictional world reminiscent of the early twentieth century. In this book Iris and Roman must overcome incredible adversity to seek reunion. Fans of the first book will no doubt enjoy the second.
4.75 stars. Almost so good. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood, but it felt a little longer than it needed to be; loved all the little callbacks to book 1 though!

I adore Rebecca Ross' work! Divine Rivals was a definite 5 star read for me and Ruthless Vows is no less amazing - the only reason I have to downgrade to 4 stars is.. well, simply put, it was too tense for my liking, too oppressive. I was hoping for a it to get just a tad more hopeful but with Roman under Dacres clutches I felt this constant oppression. And on one hand I think it's great that the author can make me feel so much for these characters but on the other hand.. because the situation pervailed throughout the entire book,it was too much for my liking. I don't want to critique the plot, because, again, I think it's absolutely well written, but it just wasn't for me. Still, another great R.Ross book that I enjoyed and I'm looking forward to dive into her other books.
Seeing what happened to Roman was sad. The life that Roman and Iris would have was going to be hard. Both had to lose people who were very important to them, the deaths that occur in the novel are heartbreaking but help carry the story and show the impacts of war.
4.5 but I will round up, no one was useless in this book and I appreciate that.
Jokes on you if you thought I learned my lesson with book 1 about finishing these books at work. This one is more emotional, and I finished it at work
I would like to preface that I always write spoiler-free reviews but not this time babyyy I genuinely will miss these characters so so much. The amount of personality in Iris especially (even when she isn't a heroine but a mere writer) I really felt for her. Roman was great too don't get me wrong, but something about Iris man. Also I expected someone to die from the war but I still sobbed when it was inevitably Forest and Sarah :cc God. I'd also like to mention how I LOVED the entire cast??? That is so rare for me but I was rooting for every single one of them to make it. Even Iris's boss Helena- what a bad bitch. And Tobias. And Attie. Just everyone. I just wish I had more to read about all of them post-war but that's just me feeling a little attached
A stunning conclusion to a stunning story. The way Rebecca Ross writes should be studied. I was so enthralled by this book from beginning to end. It's truly become one of my favorite series ever!
