I wouldn't call this one as funny as some of her other works, but I did laugh a few times. It also has some darker themes too it : abuse, prostitution, child abuse, neglect.
Interesting story, but I thought it a bit lacking – pulled through section by banter alone. I really liked the characters and how she framed things. Bad people aren't always all bad and good people aren't always good. The bad guy here is looking for his daughter, willing to do anything, destroy all he has made to find her again. The chief of police though who is supposed to be a good guy, loved by all, would rather kill his son than let his secrets get out.
This look at oppositions also kind of relates to our main characters as they have both done criminal activity, both victims of circumstance, both survivors looking for a reason to move on. So, while one is the abductor and the other the abductee, I didn't see this as a case of falling for your tormentor, but kindred spirits finding each other and finding a reason to find a future of peace.
All in all, not my favorite of her books, but a good read nonetheless.
