For four years sixteen-year-old Twylla has lived in the castle of Lormere, the goddess-embodied, whose touch can poison and kill, and hence the Queen's executioner--but when Prince Merek, her betrothed, who is immune to her touch returns to the kingdom she finds herself caught up in palace intrigues, unsure if she can trust him or the bodyguard who claims to love her.

This was an interesting tale. Somewhat predictable at times but still very enjoyable. The characters are likeable and I'm interested to see where it goes next.

This rating and review will probably be one of the most difficult of the month.
I came into this book wanting a story . I was ready to soak. I was ready to tune out reality and devour this book. And you know what? I did.
I'm not saying there weren't a few hiccups here and there, definitely were a few but, the world building was so nice. The characters were there and obvious what role they played... or did they? There were twists and turns, mysteries and secrets, lovable & hate-able characters– I just adored this book.
The plot was seriously great. I loved how things went. My mind was all over the place guessing at the end so, I kinda had it as one of my possibilities. Was still enjoying the book the whole time.
At the same time, I ended the book completely frustrated. I love it as much as I want to scream at it. I don't even know if this book should be tagged as a favorite or not. So, I should probably dive into those.
-I have a problem with how gullible Twylla is in the book. Looking at it as a character trait, I can deal with it easier. Just because she is clever at times doesn't mean she is smart... even though it is a bit shown that she is...
-The ending... I just... I ugh. Okay, let me explain don't worry, no spoilers . I liked the turn of events and how everything worked out.
I did think the epilogue was a bit confusing when it didn't need to be.
My biggest problem, probably with the whole book which is what lowered my rating, is that I didn't realize this was the end of Twylla's story. I was ready to read more of her adventure and she what she did but.... no. Ughhhhh I don't like series that don't follow the same main character– well okay, correction I don't like it sprung on me especially when it is this kind of high fantasy.
So, after groaning about no more Twylla sad face then doing my volunteering at the library, and eating dinner, I finally sat down to write this review and my feelings have leveled out. Will I miss those characters? YES #TeamLief But, I'm ready for Errin's story and the continuation of this weird world.
Recap:
Characters: Love'em. World&Magic: Very interesting and I'm ready to learn more!!
*Romance: Yes... love triangle... I'm sorry but BUT I don't hate them. When not overdramatic, I can enjoy them. In this case, I loved the romance and it doesn't feel too much like a love triangle when the love obviously isn't reciprocated. So romance: HUGE CHECK! Lief & Twylla were lovely.
Since I received The Sleeping Prince (The Sin Eater's Daughter #2) as a goodreads giveaway, I'll be reading that soon which, I'm excited about.
RECOMMEND: YES! Please go read this and talk about it with me. Totally under-hyped.
If it weren't for the really wonderful narration, I doubt I'd have finished this one. There are really two main problems I had with the story. One is that the main character never really does anything. She just gets buffered about by whoever happens to be closest at the moment. The other problem is that every time the author introduced a really awesome concept to the world, she would later on downplay or negate it. I do not read a fantasy novel to find out magic isn't real. Really, I already knew that.
2 stars for the story.
5 stars for the narration.
