First time listening to the audio book and it made the whole magical experience even better!
Some first reactions: “What? I'm reading Harry Potter?” “Why are there entire chapters devoted to this obnoxious contact/broomstick sport quidditch?” “How can I care about hating Harry Potter's ‘muggle' family when they're so boringly and unrealistically evil?” “Gah! What? Why... I can't stop reading!”
Harry Potter, I'd been told, creates a universe, but it seems more like one pulled from directly from Pratchett or Tolkien, with a writing style that's just a little too bland. It is pretty dark for a kid's book, so it does has a fresh tone and feel (well, since Dahl's children's books at least). But the fantasy tropes are so bare-bones, and I'm surprised Rowling doesn't attempt to detail her dragons and cauldrons and spells with something that truly makes them hers. I had a hard time getting through the novel with all the cardboard characters, the obnoxious adverb use in dialog, and Rowling's utter lack of anything interesting to say at the end of a chapter. There's no spunk or wit, surprisingly; characters are sad and happy and jealous and mean, but they're rarely cute or funny or engaging.
But you've likely heard this before. Overreactions to overrated literature. And hey, look, I still finished it, and I'm still wanting more. And I can say this for it: it does intrigue very well. For a first book, it starts us with an exciting grand narrative (though the second novel grabbed me more with a real story arc and mystery). But it's not the next Star Wars or Lord of the Rings. It's cute, but there's very little edge to it, and there's very little of a world to get lost in. Good thing there's a good mystery within. We'll see how this goes...
I truly believe that any one of any age can read and enjoy this book. I'm currently reading all of the Harry Potter books and I read the first all the way back in 2018. It may be intimidating to start such a long and famous series, but it's worth it!
What else is there to do but re read HP for the 8th time when you're stuck in a rut. Reading these books to me is a little bit like time-travel. I have read the same scenes so many times that re reading is now about me getting sentimental over my 16 yr old self and her reactions to things unfolding the first time or the 20 yr old me realizing i would never get tired of this series even if i know every single sentence by heart or 23 year old me buying collector's editions because i saved up for them and then ending up reading all 8 without planning to because i can't put these books down once i pick them.
As a child, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was my absolute favorite book. It wasn’t just a story—it was magic brought to life. I was captivated by Harry’s journey from an ordinary boy to a wizard discovering a world full of wonder. From Diagon Alley to Hogwarts, every page felt like stepping into a dream I never wanted to leave.
The friendships between Harry, Ron, and Hermione taught me about bravery, loyalty, and kindness—values that stayed with me long after I closed the book. The magical world J.K. Rowling created felt so real, and I often found myself wishing for my own Hogwarts letter. Even now, revisiting it brings back waves of nostalgia.
This book shaped my love for reading and imagination, leaving an impact that has lasted well into adulthood. For me, it will always be the ultimate childhood treasure.
Certainly a pleasant read, well actually a listen, as I chose the audiobook format. I'd recommend the book to everybody solely to experience the superb narration by Stephen Fry. I doubt I would enjoy the book as much without his input. The story itself was fine but slightly frustrating. I've read the book years ago, and I forgot most details, and I'm afraid, those details bothered me quite considerably. At times, I found it extremely hard to compose my suspension of disbelief. A multitude of described events just didn't make any sense after you thought about them for like a second or two. The Forbidden Forest chapter was insane (in a bad way), and the finale was unbelievable (in a bad way too). But to be honest, there was some charm in the childish naivety of the plot. I simply hope, the next books will be a trifle more reasonable, because I might not endure it. All in all a pleasant, but frustrating read.
Całkiem przyjemna książka, ale nic wielkiego, przynajmniej na razie. Jako że widziałem wcześniej film, fajnie było zobaczyć zmiany, ale tak naprawdę to, poza skróceniem początku przed Hogwartem i kilkoma zmianami w środku fabuły, film idzie scena w scenę z książką. Pierwsza część filmowa to jeden z moich ulubionych filmów i uważam, że adaptacja jest lepsza od oryginału.
এই বই যে-বছর প্রথম বেরোলো, ১৯৯৭ সালে, সেই বছর আমি প্রাইমারি স্কুলের গণ্ডি পেরিয়ে হাইস্কুলে ক্লাস ফাইভে ভর্তি হই। মানে, হ্যারি পটার পড়ার একেবারে উপযুক্ত বয়স! কিন্তু দুটো কারণে পড়া সম্ভব হয়নি। প্রথমত, আপাদমস্তক বাংলা মাধ্যম স্কুলের ছাত্র হওয়ায়, ইংরিজি গল্পের বই পড়ার সময় হাঁটুতে জোর পেতাম না (তাছাড়া, আমরা ছিলাম পশ্চিমবঙ্গের পোগোতিসিল কমিউনিস্ট বামফ্রন্ট আমলের সরকারি প্রাইমারি ইশকুলের “ইংরিজিবিহীন” ছাত্তর— এই ব্যাপারটা যারা জানে, তারা জানে)।
দ্বিতীয় কারণ, আমাদের টিমটিমে মফস্বল শহরে টেক্সটবুক বাদ দিলে ইংরিজি হরফওয়ালা যে-বইগুলো পাওয়া যেত তার নাম ডিকশনারি। তাই কোথায় পাবো হ্যারি পটারের বিলিতি গল্পের বই? জোগাড় করা সম্ভব হলেও দাম পড়বে আকাশছোঁয়া। সুতরাং, আমার গোটা কিশোরবেলা কেটেছে হ্যারি পটারহীন। যদিও খবরের কাগজে দেখতাম এই বই নিয়ে বিশ্বব্যাপী উন্মাদনা। একেকটা বই বেরোচ্ছে, আর জগৎজুড়ে পটারহেডরা হামলে পড়ছে বইয়ের দোকানে। আনন্দবাজারের প্রথম পৃষ্ঠায় ছবি ছাপা হতো : রাত জেগে লাইনে দাঁড়িয়ে হ্যারি পটার সিরিজের নতুন বই বগলদাবা করে হাসিতে উদ্ভাসিত পটারপ্রেমীর মুখ। সব মিলিয়ে সে এক অশৈলী কাণ্ডকারখানা!
অবশেষে ঠিক ২৭ বছর বাদে মোলাকাত হলো হ্যারি পটারের সঙ্গে। এমন নয় যে ইতিপূর্বে পড়ার সুযোগ পাইনি। সুযোগ পেলেও ইচ্ছে হয়নি। কারণ ফ্যান্টাসি জঁরের বই পড়তে আমার ভালো লাগে না। বেশ কয়েক বছর ধরে বহু muggle-রা আমাকে হ্যারি পটার সিরিজটা পড়ার জন্য প্ররোচনা এবং উৎসাহ দিয়ে আসছিলেন, তবুও পড়িনি। কিন্তু এই বছর কী যে হলো, ঠিক দুর্গাপূজার আগে মা দুর্গার নাম স্মরণ করে গোটা সিরিজটাই কিনে ফেললাম! মারি তো গণ্ডার, লুটি তো ভাণ্ডার। আপাতত সিরিজের প্রথম বইটা শেষ করলাম। তো, কেমন লাগলো হ্যারি পটারের কিসসা?
আমি বরং জে কে রওলিংয়ের ব্যাপারে দু-চারটে কথা বলি। শিশুসাহিত্য মানেই তাকে হতে হবে নিষ্কলঙ্ক। তার মধ্যে থাকবে না কোনো ভায়োলেন্স। শিশুদের গল্পের চরিত্ররা হবে শান্তিপ্রিয় আদর্শবান মানুষ। শিশুসাহিত্যের জগৎ মানেই তাকে হতে হবে গঙ্গার জলে ধোয়া একটা নিষ্পাপ পবিত্র জগৎ। শিশুদের মন যে বড্ডো কচি এবং কোমল। খুনখারাবি আর হিংসা-বিদ্বেষওয়ালা বইপত্তর পড়লে বড় হয়ে তারা নির্ঘাত সিরিয়াল কিলারে পরিণত হবে! হ্যারি পটারের স্রষ্টাকে একটা Hagrid-সাইজের কুর্নিশ জানাই, শিশুসাহিত্যের এইসব ন্যাকাচন্দর ফর্মুলার গালে সপাটে একটা থাবড়া মারার জন্য!

পৃথিবীটা যেমন, ঠিক তেমনটাই দেখিয়েছেন রওলিং। পৃথিবীতে ছোটদের অকারণে হেনস্তা হতে হয়। ছোট হওয়ার জন্য তারা প্রতিবাদ করতে পারে না। অনেক সময়েই, ছোটদের সঙ্গে বড়রা মোটেও আদর্শ আচরণ করে না (একেকজন বাপ মা-র কাজকর্ম দেখলে তো ডিক্টেটররাও লজ্জায় আঁচলে মুখ লুকাবে)। ইশকুলে পড়ার সময়েও বদমাইশ ছেলেপিলের অভাব থাকে না। সহপাঠীরা একে-অপরের পিছনে লাগে। মানসিক এবং শারীরিক— দুভাবেই ক্ষতি করার চেষ্টা করে। এমনকি শিক্ষকদের মধ্যেও বদমাইশির কমতি থাকে না। ক্লাসরুমের ভিতরে হোক কিংবা বাইরে, এই দুনিয়াটা মোটেও সুবিধের জায়গা নয়। এবং বিশ্বাস করুন ছাই না করুন, ছোটরা কিন্তু এইসব ব্যাপার-স্যাপার খুব ভালো করেই বোঝে! তবু দুনিয়ার এই কর্কশ পাথুরে মাটিতেই ক্যাকটাসের মতো ফুটে ওঠে বন্ধুত্বের রঙিন ফুল। দুনিয়াটা কর্কশ বলেই বোধহয় বন্ধুরা আমাদের কাছে এত দামি! বই পড়ে কিংবা সিনেমা দেখে হিংসা-বিদ্বেষ শেখার দরকার হয় না। ওসব জিনিস নিশ্বাস-প্রশ্বাস দিয়ে যাতায়াত করে ছোটদের মনোজগতে। তাদের থেকে এইসব জিনিস জোর করে লুকিয়ে রাখলে বরং উপকারের চেয়ে ক্ষতি করা হয় বেশি।
জে কে রওলিং তাঁর ক্ষুদে পাঠকদের সঙ্গে ভণ্ডামি করেননি। Hogwarts-এর জগৎটাকে তিনি দ্বিধাহীন স্পষ্টতার সঙ্গে নির্মাণ করেছেন। রওলিংয়ের লেখনীও চমৎকার— সরস এবং স্মার্ট। তাঁর জগতে ভালো-খারাপ পাশাপাশি অবস্থান করে। এই জগতে ছোটরা সবসময় বাই-ডিফল্ট ভালোমানুষ হয় না, আবার বড়রাও অনেকসময় ছেলেমানুষী কাজ করে। কাহিনির ভাঁজে ভাঁজে উজ্জ্বল, আশ্চর্য এবং বুদ্ধিদীপ্ত কল্পনার শ'য়ে শ'য়ে ফুলঝুরিকে ডানা মেলে উড়তে দিয়েছেন বটে, কিন্তু কাহিনির চরিত্ররা কেউই কাল্পনিক নয়। তাদের সবাইকে আমরা কমবেশি চিনি। আর চিনি বলেই, ২৭ বছর দেরি করে পড়া শুরু করলেও জমজমাট এই কাহিনির সঙ্গে আমি দিব্যি একাত্মতা অনুভব করতে পারছি। সবেমাত্র প্রথম বইটা শেষ করলাম, তাই সামগ্রিকভাবে খুব বেশি মতামত জানানো উচিত হবে না। এখনও তো অনেকটা পথ পাড়ি দেওয়া বাকি আছে। জিন্দেগি এক সফর হ্যায় সুহানা... ইয়াহাঁ কাল ক্যায়া হো কিসনে জানা?
El inicio de un universo bien construido, que narra una historia de manera ligera, accesible pero sobre todo inmersiva, con personajes carismáticos y aventuras divertidas.
Re-read. Great start to the series, a few inconsistencies here and there but overall great.
I'm twenty-seven years old and I've went all of my life without diving into Harry Potter. I saw the first few movies as a kid and didn't particular like them, I wasn't a big book reader since I preferred video games, and the Harry Potter video games were mostly not worth experiencing.
Years later, far past the finale of the series, I decided I was finally going to do it: I was gonna read the damn books. And I have to say, it was totally worth it.
Loved this book a ton. The story was paced really well and introduced a ton of likeable characters I enjoy spending time with. Cannot wait to read the rest!

Por un lado crea un universo rico, vibrante y eficiente en unas pocas paginas junto con toda la aventura. Entiendo por que tanta gente se quedo flipada con las posibilidades de este universo.
Por otro lado Quidditch, que pesada de verdad, se podría haber ahorrado unas cuantas paginas de esto.
This is my first ever time reading Harry Potter. I saw the first movie when it came out but can't remember it now! I bought the game and done people said you should read the books and watch the movies so you have more of an idea where you are.
A bit hard to keep up with characters and wizardry names but great book!! David N.

Very solid and exciting starting point for this series. It sets up a lot of interesting storylines I'm pumped for.
