I purposefully delayed finishing this book for over a month because I could hardly stand it to be over. I had to read many chapters over and over again, the first time my heart racing, sweating. The second time to really understand what was going on, after calming down a little. The third time to indulge myself and enjoy the dialogue, descriptions, and pace anew. Reading this book was one of the most physiological reading experiences I've had. Funny, since I have read it and watched the movies multiple times. It's clear a book really speaks to my soul when it is still riveting and rapturous even when I know the end.
I'd recommend every Potter fan out there to listen to the audiobook version, even if they've already read the books. Stephen Fry's voice is really amazing! And speaking of this book, when I'd first read it, it seemed that Rowling made this book unnecessarily lengthy, and I also was really annoyed by Harry's behaviour. But listening to the book just after finishing Goblet of Fire made me understand and appreciate Harry's angst and alienation. The boy had just seen a friend getting killed right in front of his eyes, and on top of that everyone was avoiding him and telling him a liar - it was bound to have made anyone angry and bitter.
This was far better and more intense then I ever thought possible to read thus far in the series. The movie doesn't come close to the justice of brilliance that lays within these pages. The battle in the ministry and neville with bellatrix was amazing. and I'm so anxious to begin Half Blood Prince now...well done rowling...very well done. I'm glad I waited to read this as an adult it hit all the feels so much better than a younger version of would have taken it.
I enjoyed the Harry Potter books enough to give them all four stars.
Except this one. I wanted to smack Potter in the face most of the way through this book. He was SO whiney! Ugh!
3.5 stars every series has that one book that doesn't grip you as much as the others but is still enjoyable and important to the series overall. For the Harry Potter series this is that book.
This used to be my least favourite of the series and the only one I've reread just once.
Surprisingly this time around, there was a lot that I greatly appreciated, a lot of nuances that I may have ignored or missed while reading the series as a teenager. I didn't like it much for the fact that it made me awfully angry and frustrated. I'm trying hard to not let the series consume me as I find myself teetering off the edge into an obsessive mania that I'd once possessed growing up.
And aahghvbjnlkml Harry why couldn't you use that mirror x(((((((((
One of my favorite books in the Potter series, though arguably the saddest. Lupin and Tonks are what makes this book so good, in my opinion.
The ending of this book is more brutal and heartbreaking than any Game of Thrones book/episode, fight me.
It's a great book with the least likable protagonist of all time. Pretty sure Rowling was having teenage son issues when she was writing this one.
So this book DEFINITELY takes a darker turn than any of the other 4 books in the series but it is so good. Warning: You will end up crying if you're the type of reader to get attached to characters. You will also wind up RIGHTEOUSLY ANGRY because there are some, for lack of a better term, INFURIATING characters who make you want to either hurt someone or bang your head against the wall! But it really is such a good book.
MY PRECIOUS SIRIUSSSSSSSS! i ABSOLUTEY ADORREEEEE BELLATRIX AS A VILLAIN. HOWEVER i do not think i will EVVER be able to forgive her for that - I understand WHY it was necessary but NO. course the main reason i love bellatrix so much is because of Helena - she is LITERALLY AMAZING
Hay un mejor desarrollo de personaje, está claro que se marca la adolescencia de Harry que se mezcla con la amenaza de Voldermort. A pesar de su extensión, funciona, no abruma.
TLDR :
Needlessly long.
Main character is a distaster.
Story is buried under boring filler.
Harry's POV is both boring and horrifying. We are stuck with pointless issues for 80% of the book and for the remaining time are witness to Harry's serious anger issues. He's had no character development for ages and is still unable to use his brain or any form of reasoning. He keeps disrespecting his friends and is unable to manage his emotions at 15. He repeatedly depicts violent behaviour that should not be acceptable in a children's or teenager's book series.
Harry is a side character in this whole story. For some reason the author thought best to use only Harry's POV and plague the reader with useless trivialities instead of giving them the meat of the story (war going on? secret organization? better focus on exams and mean teacher).
This book should have been titled “Harry Potter and the Inquisitor”, because that is all it is about.
As in the previous books, we are suddenly woken up from trivialities with a bunch of action we barely understand (wtf prophecy?) only to be spoon-fed the whole plot in a block of monologue.
The worst of the series so far.
An incredibly frustrating book. It is ridiculously long and outstays its welcome, but not before completely fumbling the plot altogether. The entire cast of characters act unlike their previous iterations and subplots are even recycled (how many times will Hagrid be banished from the school??)
One positive, and perhaps the ONLY positive, was the portrayal of Black's death, especially compared to the film version. I was really struck by the sudden death without much dramatic buildup... Which only made it hurt more.
Another great book from J K Rowling. This year is even more darker than the last. Harry is the typical angry teenager - brooding, snapping, bottling up his thoughts and then screaming out at everyone. Definitely was shocked by this character change the first time I read the book (now I'm more sympathetic). Sirius's death was a horrible chapter. And from this book onwards, Dumbledore's weaknesses and frailties begin to surface increasingly.
This used to be my favourite Harry Potter, but good god there was a lot in that book.
Not bad at all. Felt more like a filler book to move the story along. Harry's attitude in this was quite annoying. It felt as though he saw himself as the hero of them all when in reality if it hadn't been for Hermonie, he probably wouldn't have gotten this far. Snape deserves so much better from those around him as well.
My God, Harry can be an idiot at times. Probably the most annoying of the series so far.
