I didn't actually re-read Gone Girl - maybe I should! - but rather I'm just moving to Storygraph. So check me out there for book recs and such: https://app.thestorygraph.com/profile/lcarslibrarian (Since you're here I just want to say that like the Hunger Games, lots of people - and imitators - didn't understand Gone Girl and IT SHOWS. That's all.)UGH. I tried Storygraph and couldn't easily access my lists. So I'm back...... :
Nick and Amy are Crazy, with a Capital ‘C'. The only person I have full sympathy for, is Go.
This was terrible. I cannot think of one positive thing to say about this book. I'm stunned at how well received it has been. The twist was not a twist. The misogyny running through this book was almost unbelievable. I have no idea why I finished it.
3.5 rounded to 4
What a great ride...but the ending? Did not like that outcome.
This book paints a pretty dismal picture of marriage, and of women, and of men, and of all combinations thereof! I'm not saying it intends to do something different than that, but that is what it does.
I don't need likable characters, but both Nick and Amy were so overflowing with animosity toward each other, their friends and family, strangers. I could never really understand or justify the concentrated misery with which they viewed people. Maybe I wasn't supposed to be able to, though? Maybe it's deliberately unnerving? I don't know. I found it somehow both upsetting and underwhelming.
I'm holding out hope that I'll like Sharp Objects more.

cw sexual assault, domestic abuse, many many many things
I almost DNFed this, but everyone told me to hang in there. I hated both of the MCs, but things really picked up after a plot twist about halfway through. It was worth reading, but I still didn't end up loving it. [SPOILERS] I can appreciate unlikable characters, but I can't get behind anything that reinforces the stereotype that women lie about being raped and/or abused just to punish or get back at men. A small thing, but Amy also states as fact that she doesn't get catcalled at all after the gains weight and there's no way that would be true and is really telling of what the author thinks of fat women. [/SPOILERS] Yeah, anyway I didn't really find this very special and thought it was fine.
One of the best psychotic thriller I've ever read...
Amy is such a strong character.... I love her and hate her at the same time.
Nick, even though at the end you feel sorry for him I think he deserved every bit of what he got...
I feel soo bad for Desi Collings. He didn't deserve such an end that to being blamed for sexual harassment when he was so sweet with Amy after all the hatred he got...
6/10
I'm ambivalent, partly a book of geniuses and partly way over the top. Did not like the ending
This is one of those rare cases where I like the book and the movie, event though I saw the movie first.
I had my doubts about reading this because it's a best seller. It's not something bad, but sometimes best sellers are not as amazing as they look, so I took my precautions and I watched the movie first. I was more than pleased with the movie because I knew Gillian Flynn hersef had written the script, so I had to read the book too... And well, I have no regrets. Actually, if I could give it more stars, I will. This book is twisted, dark, brutally honest, and amazing.
Amy is my favorite villain ever, and I can't think of a better antagonist than Nick. The story captivated me in every page, and it was very very adictive.
The only thing I need now it's another Gillian Flynn book.
This was a re-read for me to hopefully get me out of my slump. I adore this movie and its movie adaptation. I don't think I can really give a true review since I know the story so well at this point, and I love it. I think the book is inventive and challenging. You're not supposed to like the characters or events. I think that fact trips up a lot of people, and they start to deconstruct the book and theorize about it being something else. It is what it is, and what transpires isn't warm and fuzzy. Love it!
Not sure what I'm going to read next, but I hope I read something.

Well written with a great plot that keeps you guessing. The first part takes a little long, but the second part is a big surprise. Book starts off like a feel good story but soon turns alarming. A psychological thriller more than anything else. Better than your average thriller.
I was listening to the audiobook of this after watching the film but after cancelling my Audible account I could no longer listen to it and couldn't get a copy of the book. At the point I reached it seemed fairly close to the film which I loved and left me feeling totally sick and horrified so I was really looking forward to reading the book. I've heard lots of amazing reviews of the book and it had the longest queue of people waiting to read it in the library I worked in than any other book except Game of Thrones! The story line is twisted and runs very deep. You literally have no idea who you can trust and along the way you form your own opinions on who's lying and who's not. It's a psychological thriller that really stayed with me for a long time.
I'm not sure how what I add will affect how great this book has already been received. I agree with the hype and thought it was awesome.
I watched the movie first about a year ago and still, I enjoyed reading this book.
Definitely one for everyone to read.
This books follows Nick , who's wife (Amy) gone missing on the day of their Fifth Anniversary . and like all gone wives cases , It's always the husband , you know everybody says that , it's always the husband , in movies , books , and in all stories , the husband is this maniac who kills his wife and go to the police to report that she's missing . but really , Is it The Husband, this time ?
this book was absolutely mind blowing , you're gonna be surprise how many times your gonna say OMG or Dafaq or Are You Kidding Me !! . like i have read this book after watching the movie and still got the same shocking moments and disturbing events that will definitely miss with your mind.
one of the things i liked about this book is telling the story through two point of views (The husband's and the wife's) . Amy's chapters where my favorite .
Also, the book and the movie were almost identical , they had some non-major differences but in general had the same events going on. I Loved Them Both .
PS. Read the book first ! .
Quotes i liked :
* It's a very difficult era in which to be a person, just a real, actual person, instead of a collection of personality traits selected from an endless Automat of characters.
And if all of us are play-acting, there can be no such thing as a soul mate, because we don't have genuine souls.
It had gotten to the point where it seemed like nothing matters, because I'm not a real person and neither is anyone else.
I would have done anything to feel real again.
* - I feel sorry for you.
- Why?
- Because every morning you have to wake up and be you.
* Friends see most of each other's flaws. Spouses see every awful last bit
I'm surprised to have come out not hating these people. Dang it, that was good ride.
I thought really hard about the first 5 stars, but then I remembered about the end and I decided to give it 4.5 stars... I mean, I really loved the book, but its end is sooooo confused. I'm still asking myself what happened with Amy and Nick... But I recommend this book ;)
I loved the book; the story, the plot, the characters, and the writing.
I did NOT like the ending!
I'm probably old-fashioned, but I like to see the “bad guy” get their just punishment. I didn't see that and it was very disappointing because if there was ever a “bad guy” who deserved it, it was this one.
BLUF: Great story with a poor ending.
The premise of this book is pretty simple. Wife goes missing. Husband didn't do it. Police think he did. It's an irresistible storyline.
Which is why you will keep reading even after you realize that the husband is a dope, the wife is likeable but socially ridiculous, and that the story continues despite having nothing interesting to share...
...but then there is a twist. It's wonderful. Even though you don't care about the players, you cannot put this book down. Sorry for the cliche, but it's like watching a car wreck - you just cannot look away, for better or worse.
Which is fortunate because, while it gets better, the ending is not satisfying.
The reason I marked this as a recommended title is because I couldn't stop talking to people about this book after the twist. I rarely share like this.
