Young, dumb, and full of...
Anyway. A lot of fun! Brought me back to my Twilight years. I'll definitely read the second.
Wouldn't say it's for diehard fantasy fans because it doesn't do anything particularly unique - but it's FUN.
First things first, Brennan is alive, now, I couldn't see that coming. More than anything because I don't feel it's a quite natural turn of events. I can't explain it at all, I just feel as if doesn't fit in. But, we'll see how it turns out.
Mouth dropped, expectations from men once again raised (thanks to Xaden) and after all these last pages I can still believe Liam is dead.
“Thank you Liam. Thank you for being my shadow. Thank you for being my friend.” He blurs in my vision as tears come faster.“It's being. My honor”
I died with Liam, I cried with Violet, I cried agin when Xaden handed her the Andarna wooden figure Liam had carved, and that riped my soul.
Also, the author made Xaden way too hot. She just took every single little thing in the world of literature, mixed it, baked it and pff Xaden was born. He's got secrets, he's got the height, he's got the muscles, he's protective but not OVERprotective, and forehead kisses. Not complaining, thought, just being a little delulu over another fictional man.
Just exquisite. The whole book. So.Fucking.Beautiful
Violet Sorrengail has her heart set on living a life among books and history as a scribe. But her mother has other plans. As the commanding general, Violet’s mother will never allow one of her children to hide away in books. Forced into joining the elite college of dragonriders, Basgiath War College, Violet must embrace her new life or die. Every day she walks a fine line. If the training doesn’t kill her, one of her fellow students certainly will.
Violet must learn to survive in a dangerous and fast-paced world. Each day brings on new threats as fellow students put the pieces together of who her mother is. Not only will she have to step up her physical prowess, but she will have to quickly learn who to trust. And not everything, or everyone, is as it seems. Rebecca Yarros has artfully hidden away twists and turns readers will never see coming.
As soon as the dragons are introduced the stakes are raised as they begin to burn those deemed unworthy. And each time they reappear the intensity ratchets up. The dragon interactions and violence of the trials create a wonderful mix of apprehension. Violet is forced into a pulse pounding scene of events. And despite playing into common tropes, the writing does a wonderful job of pulling readers into the moment.
Alongside the close calls and emotional devastation, a romance begins to simmer. While there is an abundance of sexual tension between characters, there is no build up of the relationship. The writing created a way for this relationship to be an instant attraction, but it felt hollow. The romance created an abundance of conflicts to drive the plot forward. Yet it never felt like a true relationship. Sure there were physical moments, but the emotional side was not as well portrayed.
Fourth Wing does a fantastic job of building friendships and rivalries. With the constant friction between characters and overall dangers, it’s sure to be an engrossing read. For those who enjoy the instant attraction and a physical instead of an emotional relationship, there will be an additional draw to the writing. But even if you do not enjoy romance in your novels, there is plenty of combat and risks to still give this a try.

If I could give this book more than 5 stars, I would. This is by far my favorite book I have ever read and I do not say that lightly. I have such a book hangover - I can't even explain it. I read this book along with my best friend and I'm really glad we did this so we could process along side each other.
The emotions you get from this book are like none other. You really experience every emotion and there isn't one page of this book that doesn't have something going on. It was exceptionally written from that standpoint. I was happy, I was angry, I cried, I laughed, I loved, I was shooketh.
I would say I'm not one for fantasy. In fact, this made me incredibly nervous because it's just not my thing. I like real world books - sue me. Lol. But this one? THIS? ONE? Is a game changer. Fourth Wing was my first fantasy/romantasy/etc book and I can assure you it will not be my last.
I can't even say enough good things about this book and I feel like I'm leaving out so many things, but all I can say is go into it completely blind. You won't regret it!
Starting Iron Flame immediately!
The FMC is annoying, as is the MMC's stupid nickname for her, and the world doesn't really make sense, but this book was entertaining. Some of the writing is cringe but I gave an extra star because it made me actually cry at one point (I'll never forgive you Rebecca
Oh. My. God. This book truly is addicting. The sole fact that it's a 500+ page book and I read it within three days proves just that. With any other book it would've taken me probably a week or longer!
This book includes so many awesome elements: romance with enemies to lovers, bad-ass characters, brutality / kinda military school setting, competition. The book is both action-packed and also takes you on an emotional roller coaster - my eyes felt as if they were glued to the pages the whole time!
The main character, Violet Sorrengail, is super intelligent, selfless, adaptable and witty which makes up for her lack of body strength. And her development throughout the book is astonishing. Violet as well as all the other characters in this book have such a depth to them and are well-developed that they feel very real. For every character in this book I either love and admire them with my whole heart or hate them with a passion.
Moving on to the world-building: it is interesting, well crafted and unique. I found the history of the realm and especially the dragons super intriguing!
Finally, this book has easily become my favorite read of the year and I'm immediately going to jump into its sequel „Iron Flame“, eagerly looking forward towards the new adventures it'll hold!

(This is more of a 3.5 star book for me, than a 4.00. But dragons gets extra points)
If it weren't for my friends I wouldn't pick this book up.
And, even if I had, i maybe would've given up in the first 150-200 pages. The story, for me, only starts picking up around page 200.
I really did end up really enjoying this book. Of course, if you have read enough of these, you can predict a few things that'll happen. The book also has a lot of similarities with Eragon and Dragonriders of Pern as well. At least, in my case, it works in favour of the book.
I really liked the world that the author had built. But I wish she had included a lot more descriptions of the dragons, the gryphons and others. I want to know more about what the world looks like, what the war college looks like. I find my self struggling to fill in those gaps.
I also wish there was more lore-building. I feel like it was cery evident what'll happen at the end of the novel with the venin and wyvern only because that's the only bit of lore/folktale that had been introduced.
Apart from those few things, I think this book is really good. I'm genuinely excited for the sequel coming out this Tuesday.
I have not cried this much since finishing Heir of Fire. I am NOT okay.
I accurately predicted the whole plot the moment she met Xaden. Unbelievably cookie cutter and un-original. The prose is subpar if not completely amateur, and the worldbuilding is vague. The only reason I've rated this book 2*s is because unfortunately, I do enjoy clichés and common tropes that Fourth Wing has included.
Second re-read review:
Yeah no I upped my rating. We went from four stars to five stars. This book just does something to me. I fcking love tairn and where everyone has Xaden of Violet as fave characters, he's mine. Violet really is your typical main girl who is weak and fragile and she does a 180 to be soooo good, but I do like her snarky and sarcastic comments. Honestly, I'm just really excited for the second book
Original first read review:
I liked it, enjoyed it, but for me it doesn't live up to the 5 star hype. The book was a little too cringy for that.
Did love tairn, I want a tairn
Such an amazing book. Love the romance, the dragons and fantasy. There a lot of different characters which create a incredible mix. Full of plot twists. I would like to have the world a little bit more developed but is just the first of the serie so is normal.
Now now now I want a refund just because this book break my heart when Liam died and it was soooo painful. I'll never recover from it
I would give this a solid 3 stars.
I went in with pretty low expectations from the hype and therefore generally enjoyed the read. It's fun, fast paced, and there's dragons. Yay. I'm ok with the spicy stuff - although the latter chunk of the book felt more teenage than I would have preferred.
I really enjoyed this, but there are plot holes galore (or at least, lots of things in this world that don't make sense with what we know so far), and it reads like R-rated YA.
Read it if you liked the Hunger Games, Divergent, and the love triangle between Kate, Sawyer, and the annoying guy in Lost.
4.5 stars for comparison to the rest of the genre, 3 stars for it as a book.
5 very well deserved stars
The magic system, the world, the characters, the plot : 10/10
There is not a single part of this book that slows down. There's always something happening and it's ALWAYS interesting.
The plot twists???? Absolutely took me out every time
I have SO MANY questions
I can't even function right now with that last page. Can't even write a decent review
Side note: why is Riorson such an attractive name, like obviously he's very book boyfriend standard material but that name really gets me
Dude. This was such a fun read! The last 25% or so gets spicy, emotional, and shocking. I actually can't wait for the next one!
Dnf 68%
It started off enjoyable enough, even though so much of it was eye-rollingly cliche. But after the bonding, it was like violet had a personality transplant and turned into the typical uber-snarky heroine. I just couldn???t put up with her any more
