Fourth Wing reminds me why I love reading so much. And heck, do I LOVE this book. It definitely lives up to its hype and so much more.
The emotions I went through while reading this book... I couldn't even begin. I smiled like an idiot, I gasped, I laughed and I definitely cried. I did. Chapter 28 gave me goosebumps. The story has been building to that one pivotal moment, and it was beautifully delivered. Magnificently done. And chapter 36 broke me. I wasn't prepared, and it broke me.
And the dragons. The dragons. Majestic creatures. Kinda make you wish you can have one. And the bond these dragons grant their riders is wonderfully magical. The dragons chose their own rider, not the other way around and that's thoroughly logical for majestic creatures as such. I particularly love Tairn's sarcasm and Andarna's softness.
The main characters are mostly lovable. I especially love Violet's steely determination and courage. She got balls, that one. Even when she is actually afraid, she stands for herself and never waver. Violet is not like some other FMCs who are always annoyingly stuck in their own angst, like they have to be different from other people. Oh please.
And then we have Xaden. Xaden Riorson. Hello, new book boyfriend. He's almost always aloof, tough and ruthless, but thoughtful. An exemplary leader. And of course, a passionate lover. With his tragic background, you could almost expect some red flags from the guy, but fortunately, he's all good. He is amazing, in fact. The way he is protective without being coddling, I admire that of him, unlike Dain the-shit-stain. Dain gave me the wrong vibe right from the very beginning. Given the chance, I'd love for Tairn to incinerate the dude to ash.
The ending will leave you screaming, though. And then you wait. You wait impatiently for the second book to come out. 7th November could not come fast enough, for sure.
The best and quickest description I can give it is, “The Hunger Games” meets “Harry Potter” with dragons.
I utterly devoured this book, staying up far too late reading it!
I've loved it so much I am buying it so that I can go back and dissect what and how the author has done, because she's done it so well.
The story follows Violet as she is required to try out to become a dragon rider.
There are a brutal series of obstacles to overcome, and at the very least, Violet herself doesn't expect to survive because she's most definitely not the strongest among the contenders.
However, she is cunning and smart, and over time she comes to realise that if she can keep her wits about her, she might just last another day.
That is, of course, if she doesn't get killed by the other contenders, and doesn't fall for the one person there who's sworn to kill her as vengeance for his parents deaths at the hands of her mother.
If you get just one book this year, make it this one!
Excellent world building and character development. The tension between the main characters is wonderful. Could not put down and can't wait until the second comes out.
I loved this book so much. It's the first book I've read since ACOTAR that I've been this enraptured with. I think the characters are fantastic. I actually like the main character. Xaden oh my gosh. I love it so much. I can't wait to read the next one. Rebecca Yarros is an incredibly talented author and I seriously loved this book.
“Fourth Wing” is a remarkable novel that stands out for its extraordinary world-building and intricately designed characters. The author has crafted a universe so vivid and detailed that it leaps off the page, immersing readers in a world that feels both fantastical and eerily familiar. The settings are described with such richness and depth that one can easily visualize the landscapes, cities, and cultures that populate this imaginative world.
What truly elevates “Fourth Wing” are its characters. Each character is meticulously developed, with distinct personalities, backgrounds, and motivations that are skillfully woven into the narrative. The protagonist, with their unique blend of strengths and vulnerabilities, is particularly compelling, leading the reader through a journey that is as emotionally engaging as it is adventurous.
The interplay between characters is masterfully executed, with relationships and dialogues that feel authentic and contribute significantly to the depth of the story. The author has a gift for creating characters who are not just players in a story, but individuals who live and breathe within their world.
In summary, “Fourth Wing” is a triumph in the realm of fantasy literature. Its rich world-building sets a stunning backdrop for a cast of characters who are as complex as they are captivating. This book is a must-read for anyone who appreciates a well-constructed fantasy world populated by characters who resonate long after the last page is turned.
Omg. This book consumed me whole. I loved it so so much. 10000000/5 stars!!!
So so good! It has dragons, it has academia (dark academia? Although usually everyone knows how someone died or who killed whom if anyone even cares), it has witty banter and it has strong characters. Plus friendship and companionship, hard work and growth, secrets and betrayal.
We only get one person's view but our heroine is definitely no damsel in distress but can stand her ground with smart thinking and dedication. She is supposed to have a variation of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and is not a badass in spite of it but because of it.
The finale had me immediately wishing for the second book but here we are, waiting...
Readers beware, spicy scenes towards the end and lot of thirsting leading up to it. For me personally, it scraped by ruining our smart badass FMC as a lot of the later part is less about academia and dragons but more about love drama; however there is a reason making it make sense in the end and it did not ruin any previous growth.

Oh man this was a ride. A bumpy ride.
The first half was good young adult fantasy with a dash of romance. Then it straight up went to steamy romantasy teritory and the last third was just a whirlwind of plot.
The plot had so many inconsistencies: how can Xaden fall of his saddle if every rider except Violet doesn't use one? how can a group of students be missing for only a day if the flight between the post and the academy takes 10 hours one way (so 20h of total flight time)?
These inconsistencies nerved me to no end which soured my enjoyment of the book immensely.
I loved the character progression of Violet and will at least read the next book.
i don't know ?
it was extremely cliché but we expected that (the super tiny mfc who fell for the super big-charismatic-tortured guy), she ofc had the best dragon blablabla
if we expected that then it was a good fantasy book
if we expected more than the cliché type of fantasy then it was very disappointing
so for me it was a 2 stars (which is pretty good considering my opinion and my level of enjoyment)
So much to love! Dragons, fierce heroines, tough military school, great world building, magic, love interests...
The spice was not for me, and the love triangle felt unbalanced and it got a bit wordy towards the end.
But overall a strong fantasy series to follow.
DNF @ 51%.
I tried so hard to like this book, truly, but not a single part of it grabbed me. I don't get the hype, but I'm glad it's making people happy.
Bueno bueno, con muchas interrogantes al final eso sí, pero muy entretenido en general. Los dragones
Someone would argue, and I'd agree, that this book isn't “for” me, so whether or not I appreciate it is irrelevant. But I kind of wonder who it is for. For 70% of the book it's a solidly formulaic YA novel and... then there's explicit sex. And I don't mean like, the characters have sex I mean it becomes an erotica novel, somewhat out of nowhere. Literary porn, although “literary” might give the wrong idea. It's not written poorly but it's also not written very well. Beyond the themes, the writing level of the whole novel feels very YA and the sex feels, to me, unnecessary, somewhat unexpected, and of an equal reading level except with more, you know, obscenity?
I definitely feel like I'm coming off a prude here and I don't feel like I am one, but the sex scenes feel written simply but with adults in mind and I guess that clashed, for me, with the tone and level of the rest of the book.
The main plot is formulaic but interesting enough, but there's not a lot else going on, and the weird horny stuff felt out of place and wasn't for me and I've said that about plenty of books written by men (looking at you Terry Goodkind) so I'm gonna skip the rest of this series.
I read this in one sitting. It took a bit to get into, about 50-80 pages but once I was in I was hooked.
I am obsessed with this book! Fourth Wing has been in the rounds in bookstagram and I didn't want to get near it. I've seen a lot of hyped books in the past and ended up not really liking them, but this time, it's different, one of the people I trust with books read it and I always trust her judgement when it comes to books so I gave in. And boy, I was in for a treat. I was literally jumping around as soon Violet bonded with her dragon. For a moment, I even thought I was going to cry because of the sheer happiness and excitement because dragons are always the best things in anything! It helps that this was really well written, all those yearning in the words brought me to a world so massive, I wanted it to be real, and the thought process was never annoying, even with Dain, when all ever want to do was punch him in the face” should be “and the thought process was never annoying, even with Dain, when all I ever wanted to do was punch him in the face. And Xaden, I had to search for fan arts because my goodness, I need to see a face in those shadows. I love this book. War with Dragons are the best things.
Deserved all the hype.
This is a good 5* book.
Loving it.
There is nothing bad i can say about this book, but it's a part of unfinished series and i will suffer with the anticipation.
Thank you for every one who recommended it.
For the once who tried to hype on a excellent book by negative reviews - shame on you.
I laughed, I cried, I stood up and Arsenio Hall'd. I am so sad that I finished the book and don't have more to read from this series right now.
This book was great and I really look forward to the next book!!
I can't remember the last time I had this much fun reading a book. It reminded me of so many of the books I read when I was a teenager. There was so much nostalgia laced within the pages of this book.
Writing: 1/5 stars
Story: 4/5 stars
Ability to surprise the writer with plot twists: 0/5 stars
I get why this is so popular - but the writing is really rough. It's a great idea and the story is fun but there are zero surprises. I guessed the “big” twist in the first few chapters and had a pretty good feeling about most of the other twists. It reminds me of the Divergent series with dragons. It's not that it's not entertaining, it's just that I've read too many books just like this. The fantasy element is a good addition but it feels immature.
TBD on if I'd read the rest of the series. I'm going to be fair with my rating and say this is better than ACOTAR but only because it's got a tiny bit of better world building and I sort of care for the side characters (although they are still painfully underdeveloped).
4.5 stars for the story
2.5 stars for the writing style that was frequently pulling me out of the story
Overall, a page turner that I enjoyed! Loved the dragons and twists. Wished that there was less of the author telling the reader what to feel and more eliciting that through the writing itself. That said though, I'll definitely read the next one!
