honestly a part of me wants to give this a 4.75 because the ending broke my heart (miss jenkins reid i am begging you to give me ONE happy ending just ONE) but i cannot in good conscience do so because this book fucks so hard. this was a reread for me brought on by the midness of the show which goes to illustrate the fuckability
Daisy Jones and the six by Taylor Jenkins Reid ISBN 9781473565951
Daisy Jones & the Six is an unforgettable masterpiece! The author took a risk and it paid off. Truly one of the most remarkable stories I have ever had the pleasure of reading. I actually took me a while to get used to the format of the book but once I did, it made complete sense for it to be written the way it was.
Set in the mid sixties – late seventies, Daisy Jones & The Six transports readers to the most iconic age of rock n' roll. The atmosphere and story composition wove such a story that I ended up googling to see if they were a real band, or at least modelled after a real band! Blown away that Taylor Jenkins Reid pulled all this out of her tushie. The way her characters have the ability to charm the readers and settle into their hearts. Her novels are multi-faceted and unlike any other books I've read, The way she captured every one of the band members thoughts on the same event at the same time, was captivating. Daisy is so dark and consuming. You can feel how she wanted nothing but to be respected and loved and she would do anything for the fame. You literally see her before your eyes go from a girl, just trying to sleep around and party to a woman who knows she wants to write songs and be seen. It really makes you wonder why people make excuses for not reaching for the stars. You can make anything happen with some talent and dreaming bigger than the moon.
Billy, ah Billy. Any woman out there who says she didn't feel a flutter in her heart for the captivating sex god, is LYING! You can't help but be drawn in but wow, the demons. The pressure of fame really does a number to people. I found the fact the split coming right as they made it big didn't make sense to me in the beginning but you really will see why at the end. It was inevitable. Sometimes there are things more important than fame. Made me contemplate my priorities.
The women in this book are all so powerful and know who they are. That was inspiring. None of the women tried to tear each other down, or were two faced.... Can definitely tell it's a work of fiction haha. The author explored a lot of interesting topics. Addiction, abortion..... so sex drugs and rock n roll. Doesn't get much more cliche than that but she makes it work. I really loved the way she blended Daisy with the six and the dynamic hunk Billy together on the stage. It was a major love/hate thing going on between them and the whole book rested on these two keeping in their own lane. They found a way to blend their musical souls together to make the kind of magic the rest of us can only dream of.
One thing I did really love, the music. Having the lyrics to all the songs in the back of the book was inspired. I would have liked a little more about the rest of the band but I think the author did the job well enough to keep everyone entertained. I see real genius in Taylors writing and the way she sets out to take centre stage. She pulls no punches, takes no prisoners and I think would be the kind of author to tell you where to shove it :)
I would recommend this book to anyone. You really have to overlook the music documentary way its written. I found it hard too but it makes sense, trust me. There's no other book out there like this. It's a stand alone book and a half! I would read this again and I'm sure the TV show will knock it out of the park.
4.5 stars out of 5!
I guess I picked this book based on the author. After I started it, I honestly thought it was about a real group. I was surprised I didn't remember the group, because I was big into music around the time the band was active. I didn't find out until much later in the book that it was fictional. WOW! This author covered every detail. I just found out there was a tv series based on the book and will check it out. I love this author. I can't wait to read more by them.
I enjoyed this and found it extremely readable–the oral history format is really breezy to get through. I don't actually know a ton about Fleetwood Mac's history so I'm not sure how 1:1 the characters mapped to that drama but it worked fine for me as a book without a lot of backstory.
I think it's hard to pull off fake songs in a book but I liked these! I'm interested to watch the TV adaptation now.
5⭐
Simplemente MARAVILLOSA.
Oh my GOODNESS, I ate this up. The ebbs and flows along with the pacing and unique structure of this book made it impossible to stop thinking about, let alone put down.
TJR paints her characters with real, distinct voices and behaviors so vividly that I felt everything written between the lines without her having to explicitly say anything. That talent of TJR allows the storylines to shape themselves before the characters can catch up quite frankly, and as things rev up at the end, the explosion of emotion and feeling in each prominent character becomes that much more real because of it.
As a gen z baby gaining a deeper understanding of the crazy 70's beyond the movies through TJR's writing, I really really enjoyed this!
I greatly enjoyed this book as well as the audio book. I definitely preferred the physical book more, just because I had a hard time linking the voice to the character.
I always enjoy TJR books, especially with how intertwined all of them are. I think they portray fame and love in an interesting way, and are always such an easy lovely read. Almost every book I have read of hers is about famous people, which gets tiring but she writes it so WELL.
My favorite part of DJ&6 was how it spoke about addiction. I think it was a little ridiculous at the end that all it took for daisy to kick the drug use was one stunt in rehab, however other than that I thought it was well written.
Also I always wish that time period of music was so interesting, so flaring a fake rendition of these stories you hear all the time was super fun.
4.5/5
If you choose the audiobook, prepare to be blown away. Each character has their own distinct voice, making it feel like a real documentary.
Witnessing the band's meteoric rise, and inevitable fallout really got to me. I don't even have the words to even do a full review. This might do for now. JUST GO READ IT!!!
It feels like Taylor Jenkins Reid's books are all the same in different fonts; and they're good, but after having read several of them, it starts getting old
not bad not great either
the concept is original , i liked that whole transcript thing this book have going on , its kinda refreshing style wise
but the plot , dont really stand out that much , the end wasnt that satisfying, maybe because i was expecting more messier events or like some more tragedies more drama
anyways i dont regret reading it but i wont remeber it either
the format is for me the most intersting aspect of this book
So... Another one that isn't my typical genre, however I loved it.
I highly recommend the audiobook version. It's a full cast and it's even more vibrant than reading it.
I didn't know anything about this book before getting the audiobook for a car trip, but I had a good time with it. I especially liked how it showed that for all of rock and roll's love of drugs, drinking, and sex, deeper relationships are the key to life. It had an unexpectedly wholesome heart and was quite tender in places. Highly recommended!
(Also, the audiobook is very high-quality, and the book's format lends itself well to it)
This book simply isn't my cup of tea, I dislike the narration style and it just doesn't make me want to get back to it. Hats off to the author for creating such believable characters and narrative, but I would only consider this mildly interesting if it were about a famous band I would be a big fan of.
