Daisy Jones and the six by Taylor Jenkins Reid ISBN 9781473565951
Daisy Jones & the Six is an unforgettable masterpiece! The author took a risk and it paid off. Truly one of the most remarkable stories I have ever had the pleasure of reading. I actually took me a while to get used to the format of the book but once I did, it made complete sense for it to be written the way it was.
Set in the mid sixties – late seventies, Daisy Jones & The Six transports readers to the most iconic age of rock n' roll. The atmosphere and story composition wove such a story that I ended up googling to see if they were a real band, or at least modelled after a real band! Blown away that Taylor Jenkins Reid pulled all this out of her tushie. The way her characters have the ability to charm the readers and settle into their hearts. Her novels are multi-faceted and unlike any other books I've read, The way she captured every one of the band members thoughts on the same event at the same time, was captivating. Daisy is so dark and consuming. You can feel how she wanted nothing but to be respected and loved and she would do anything for the fame. You literally see her before your eyes go from a girl, just trying to sleep around and party to a woman who knows she wants to write songs and be seen. It really makes you wonder why people make excuses for not reaching for the stars. You can make anything happen with some talent and dreaming bigger than the moon.
Billy, ah Billy. Any woman out there who says she didn't feel a flutter in her heart for the captivating sex god, is LYING! You can't help but be drawn in but wow, the demons. The pressure of fame really does a number to people. I found the fact the split coming right as they made it big didn't make sense to me in the beginning but you really will see why at the end. It was inevitable. Sometimes there are things more important than fame. Made me contemplate my priorities.
The women in this book are all so powerful and know who they are. That was inspiring. None of the women tried to tear each other down, or were two faced.... Can definitely tell it's a work of fiction haha. The author explored a lot of interesting topics. Addiction, abortion..... so sex drugs and rock n roll. Doesn't get much more cliche than that but she makes it work. I really loved the way she blended Daisy with the six and the dynamic hunk Billy together on the stage. It was a major love/hate thing going on between them and the whole book rested on these two keeping in their own lane. They found a way to blend their musical souls together to make the kind of magic the rest of us can only dream of.
One thing I did really love, the music. Having the lyrics to all the songs in the back of the book was inspired. I would have liked a little more about the rest of the band but I think the author did the job well enough to keep everyone entertained. I see real genius in Taylors writing and the way she sets out to take centre stage. She pulls no punches, takes no prisoners and I think would be the kind of author to tell you where to shove it :)
I would recommend this book to anyone. You really have to overlook the music documentary way its written. I found it hard too but it makes sense, trust me. There's no other book out there like this. It's a stand alone book and a half! I would read this again and I'm sure the TV show will knock it out of the park.
4.5 stars out of 5!
