I received this book from a Goodreads Giveaway for a honest review.
This book is about Emma Lowe who is a new real estate agent who has recently learned her estranged father has died. Even though she never met the man nor knew anything about him, she goes all the way to England for his funeral where she is the only one there and is given a folder and box she is told never to open. Of course, she does and that is what sets her on this crazy, not quite understandable adventure.
[mild spoilers ahead – nothing too story ruining]
Honestly, I powered through this and at page 200 I was mumbling “I just need to finish; I just have to finish.”
The idea of a jewel giving people power/immortality and the basics of the plot really are quite intriguing (the reason I entered the giveaway) but, I was never completely drawn into the story. I didn't like Emma. She doesn't listen, shes SO stubborn for no reason it is annoying, and the romance came out of nowhere. I don't even understand how people like them as a couple because I don't know what they are referring to. The part where she doesn't trust him the whole book? The part where she continuously lies to him even after she mentions to herself she should trust him? Or how whenever they touch she feels the need to take her clothes off? (Which may I add is shown later IN A BAD LIGHT) –I don't understand
I think more building up on WHY she likes him would be nice. Also, explanation!! Emma knows less about the jewel than we do and yet I'm still so confused about the whole book. Well, I understand bits and pieces but, in my mind they don't connect nor does it quite make sense because I don't know much of the bad guy's personality. Why is he doing what he is doing? Why is Emma special? What do you mean there are special powers now –at practically the end of the book?!
-Perhaps these were there in order for me to read the next book but, I'm frustrated but I feel I got no answers only more questions.
Also the different jewel powers... So, only one is different??
Before I give away any more about the story I'll move on.
-I thought the book could have used a little more editing and work on grammar but, nothing that normally would have annoyed me too much. Any examples I've forgotten because of how quickly I was trying to down the book hoping against hope that eventually answers would be given and something would spark my interest enough to hold me.
AS A PLUS, there were a lot of twists and turns and (while I don't understand some of the timeline??) I found some intriguing just not enough. Diverse set of characters, both ethnically and personality-wise, which was nice to see.
I will not be reading the sequel and at this point I feel bad winning the giveaway because of my negative review.
