Okay, so I read books 1-3 and dnf'd book 4 @ 34%. Let me say I think this series started out AMAZING and I had such high hopes. And truly, I think some people will enjoy this one even more than me. Perhaps if I hadn't tried binge-reading the series I'd have liked it more???
We've got an interesting setting, lovely characters, and a lot of angst and obstacles to work through. A lot of hurt/comfort vibes as well. It's academy so bullying from other students, not her guys. The plot is pretty fast and the romance is both insta-attraction and slow/medium burn.
Here's the negatives though. Putting it under a spoiler tag just in case.1. 4 books in and I was STILL getting the guys confused with each other. I was reading pretty much nonstop and still kept thinking "Oz? Right the wolf shifter... the... flirty one? No, the other one who is--" honestly gotta stop there because I can't even remember his personality. Which leads to...2. The guys have little to no personality and what they do have changes. Justin (dragon shifter) over 1000 years old is supposed to be grumpy/cranky and not a big talker. But he's immature (they all are tbh) is dramatic and occasionally talks like Nick does which is confusing af. Don't even get me started on Trent who was introduced to us confident and cocky and then turned submissive and in the background once he got what he wanted. Can't forget that she thought his fox didn't even want her when they first met which leads us to... 3. Lack of consistency and not everything makes sense. The time table in book 1 is wack. Things that will happen in 1 week happen in 3 and "Oh I need to do this immediately and I'm happy it gives me purpose" turns into "Oh right needed to do this thing-- meant to do it days ago...". The first book is one semester + winter break, the second book is... a few weeks???, and the third book is again maybe a few weeks??? but I honestly couldn't tell how much time was passing. Time passed the most when she was unconscious. 4. Repetition. Omg this series needs an editor. Like, how many times does an event need to be rehashed to new people? Have that happen off page. How many times do we have to read about how abused she was as we tell new people? Again, it can happen. Off. Page. It wasn't so bad in the first books, but after book 3, like... I get it already. 5. And this is the worst one- there is little to no romance in these books. I was accepting of this in book one, somewhat in book 2, but there is no romance! There is no downtime for them to fall in love and yet they are her true mates and they need her-- their beasts are pushing them to have sex. She doesn't want to, isn't ready and wants the choice to be hers, but she never gets a choice -- I don't care that they say she does or feels she finally does!! When the choice is bond me, be intimate with me or I'm going to be crazed, that isn't a choice! It also isn't romance!! I can barely tell the guys apart because they all love her, are obsessed with her and her safety, but no one actually tries to romance her. We see them tutor her, escort her to class, etc. all in the name of safety. No dates, no alone time. So???? I know plot is important but if you cut all the repetitions and the bits where everyone complains that her emotions are negatively affecting them all (yeah, that happens -_-") there might be time for some actual romance-building. I 100% understand where the MC is coming from when she's like "I'm feeling overwhelmed and need time" because everyone is pressuring her and you know, sulking instead of wooing her. Don't even get me started on Asher who I don't think should even be a part of things and who I forget is there constantly. His role is to push her constantly and then feel guilty and self-sacrificing OH WAIT just like Justin *sigh*. They are all friggin' the same. So here we are in book 4 and I don't believe in their romance-- heck, I don't even want her to give certain guys a chance-- and there is the potential for even more mates on the horizon I just... I just can't. I'm starting to hate everything about the series and I gotta stop here where I still hold some good feelings for the series.
