DNF-50%. I couldn't get over some of the language used and suppositions that were presented as facts. The jumps between years and viewpoints was confusing. I will look elsewhere for Small's story.
When I first started this book, I almost gave up on it. The writing is very stylized, the chapters especially short and oftentimes character and setting descriptions read more like a screenplay than a novel. In addition, the main character Frank was unlikable and his womanizing in particular turned me off.
I'm glad I decided to keep reading.
As the story progressed, I stopped paying attention to the writing style and became fully engrossed in the plot. At the end, I actually became nervous for Frank as the story reached its climax. Frank himself grew on me as we explored his relationships with his family and co workers.
I still could have done with less adultery, though.
I received a free copy of this book through Goodreads First Readers program, but my rating and review are my own opinion.
A solid first novel! It took several chapters to pull me in completely, but once Zach was firmly in the picture things picked up. The heroine is level-headed, though a bit insecure, and the hero is adorably naive. Their romance is refreshingly sweet.
I'm always interested in different interpretations of mythological figures, and I'm excited to see what other characters will be popping up in future installments. The fates in particular were creepily wonderful.
The story ended with several tantalizing story plots that I'm eager to see resolved in the rest of the series!
This clever story is a bittersweet romance with a little mystery tossed in. Due to Sharry's talented writing, I was pleasantly surprised by the ending!
Sharry's characters are sympathetic, deep and endearing. I felt a connection with each of them; felt joy when they were happy and feared for them when things looked bleak. Bridey Gallagher in particular was my favorite. I want her to be my friend!
Although there were a few disorienting moments when the timeline jumped from past to present, overall I was hooked as Peter and Renata's relationship grew and the characters evolved. The Portuguese culture Sharry mixes into the story felt authentic and created a nice atmosphere. It was something different for me, and I enjoyed it a lot!
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good romance, especially as the mystery element elevates it to a different level!
I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway, but I was not asked for a review or rating. This is my honest opinion.
This book frustrates me, because the characters' feelings and musings are poignant and deep, but the over abundance of smoking and drinking by the main characters turns me off.
I don't like how easily Miles fell into smoking, something that is dangerous and a lifelong addiction. Books have tremendous influence over kids, and the fact that Miles suffered no more than a slap on the hand for his illegality doesn't send a good message.
Looking past the smoking a drinking, Green's thoughts on life, death, suffering and religion are thoughtful and relatable, and worth taking a look at.
As a fan of Grange's Austen Hero series, I was interested to see what she'd do with Wickham. The book was super short and it ends where Pride and Prejudice begins which disappointed me greatly. I wanted to know what Wickham thought of Elizabeth and what in the world he was thinking when he ran off with Lydia. The book seemed so incomplete without these elements. My advice, read “Mr. Darcy's Diary” instead.
Feels like the story is just getting started! Lots of action with some tender moments in between. The love story feels a little cliche, but I love the society Lu has created.
The audio book narrator was amazing. He had distinct voices that fit the characters and read with such emotion. The book has some beautiful prose, but the story made me frustrated and uncomfortable the whole way through.
Brandon Sanderson creates such intricate and amazing places, unique from anything I've read before (plants grow from rock!). Every character, big and small has personality and back story. I've never know Sanderson to create a flat character. The story is part action and part mystery, and always engaging and witty.
I cannot wait for book 2!
Although the mystery was exciting, the actions of the characters frustrated me to no end, and the chemistry between Lin and the rest of the cast is tepid at best.
One guy dating three women is not my thing, and I almost DNFed this one. But I believed in Beth O'Leary and was rewarded. Stick with it!
A quick, fun read. Green always has vibrant, fleshed out characters and witty dialouge and “Katherines” is no exception. I saw some similar themes of identity and leaving your mark on the world that I saw in “The Fault in Our Stars,” but “Kathrines” doesn't quite reach the level of “Stars”.
This was a great adventure book! The ship seemed so realistic (you know, if hydrium actually existed), and the author did a great job of explaining his characters actions. I could easily see this book being made into a movie!
5 stars specifically for the Jim Dale audiobook. Humorous and engaging. Definitely worth a listen!
I can't help but get sucked in to Pierce's world yet again. Beka is a strong, realistic heroine with heart wrenching flaws and extrodinary strengths. I love that Pierce makes a point to include the little things, like loincloths and food, that are so often ignored. The ending was a wild ride of highs and lows, and I'm sad to leave Beka behind.
Not quite up to the standards of Green's other books. I was also a little disturbed by the amount of vandalism and partying in this book. I know its for teens, but I still felt there was too much.
I found Fforde's first Thursday Next book really fun with a great detective/adventure story. The best part of this book is the anachronism present throughout, giving us a unique picture of how London could be if there were a few key differences (such as time travel)! The only criticism I have is that the book is very busy. There are so many elements to the story that with a new world to get used to, it gets a mite confusing. I'm eager to pick up the next in the series!
Was a bit long and the plot dragged a bit. I think the cast of characters got too big and it lost some of the close knit family we saw in Inkheart. Still a good story, and a good ending to the trilogy, but not as good as the first two.
Usually I feel like the second book in the series is just a long set-up for the third. With this series, I actually feel like the first book was a set up for the second. The characters gained so much depth in this beautifully crafted middle book.
I couldn't stop thinking about this book, so I read it again right away. Powerful and heartbreaking.
Sanderson is amazing. I can't help falling in love with his characters, over and over again. Wax and Wayne (I see what you did there) are a hilarious duo, and the central mystery of the story is compelling. The classic Saderson twist, is as always, a thrill to experience. I only wish there was more.
