Very good memoir - Chung writes of adoption from the perspective of an adoptee. It is a deep look at the many ways adoption shaped her. She tells of the hardships of being different from her community. She takes a loving and truthful approach to how her parents loved her and in some ways failed her. I enjoyed reading it very much. I am looking forward to reading her next book.
Great book! Lucy does a great job of chronicling her life journeys. This volumes continues the story with great detail. It follows her experience of having a child. Very good read.
Very good memoir of a Vietnamese family - couldn't put it down. Read in one sitting!
After reading Blueberries for Sal - I felt I had to read Make Way for Ducklings. Love this book. It is fun to read it out loud and even grownups enjoy it.
I really enjoyed this novel. It has been a while since I wanted to read every free moment I had. This book had me from the first page. I couldn't put it down. I loved getting the perspective of the characters that Picoult wrote about.
My only aside would be that I sometimes felt that the racism Ruth encountered was a little too on the nose. But that said, I think that everything she encounters has happens to people of color on a regular basis. I am willing to accept Picoult's representation of Ruth's life in light of the focus of the novel.
I think that many readers will love this novel. It strikes close to home with the events of the last few years. This novel will be sticking with me for a long time.
Gamache receives the gift of an old map found in the bistro walls. He takes it to his new job as Commander of Surete's Academy. He finds himself at the center of a murder investigation of one of its corrupt professors.
This novel tied up some previous loose ends from previous novels. I, as always enjoyed my time reading more of the series.
I am marking this as read because I wasted a lot of time with it and want credit for it.
Loved this book. One of my favorites of the year so far.
The author did a great job of pacing the novel back and forth through time to tell the story of Ada and David. Ada's character will stay with me for a while.
Couldn't read this book fast enough. I was so interested in the resolution of the mystery behind David's past.
I strongly recommend this book!
I picked this book for my library book group. I am now kind of dreading the discussion. Many reviewers on the amazon page see the relationship in the book as pedophilia. And yet The Book of the Month readers picked it as The Book of the Year for 2016.
In reading the book, I kept seeing Wavy as a lost abused child. The grownups who were supposed to care for her put her into abusive conditions. Kellen was also a victim of abuse. He is only takes care of her - protects her and gets her to school. Is the relationship “right”? No. Was I totally comfortable reading this book? No. But it all happens in a very broken world. Kellen and Wavy have a loving connection. They see each other as family. Is it an abusive relationship? I didn't think so.
Oh well - if anyone shows up for the discussion, we will have an interesting talk.
Obviously a sad read but I found it thought provoking. Susan Klebold gives you a mother's point of view on a unthinkable tragedy.
Intense murder mystery with romance thrown in . . . nice break from the real life. Everything was solved at the end and the main characters fell in love. Brennan does a great job of creating characters that interest you and a chilling murder plot. I will probably be reading the third book in the series soon.
Just what I needed: a short tight novel that shows the inner life of a character. It explores the tight bond between a child and her mother - even in a relationship that seems broken. Looking forward to reading more of the Amgash novel series.
Favorite quotes from the book:
Lonely was the first flavor I had tasted in my life, and it was always there, hidden inside the crevices of my mouth, reminding me.
But I think I know so well the pain we children clutch to our chests, how it lasts our whole lifetime, with longings so large you can't even weep. We hold it tight, we do, with each seizure of the beating heart: This is mine, this is mine, this is mine.
I lead 4th - 5th grade discussion group at my library. We read a good selection of books through out the year. This book has been one of my favorites of this school year.
Perry is a great character. He has been living in an unique and interesting place for a child : a prison. His mother gave birth to him in prison and has been allowed to raise him there. This book follows his journey once it has been discovered by officials that he has been living within the prison system. I am really looking forward to hearing what my fellow book group members think of the book.
There is a lot I liked about this novel.... but in the end, it was not my cup of tea. I enjoy so much of Joe Hill's writing and storytelling. But this novel was too long and sad for me to love. I got about 60% through the book and started skimming to just to get to pivotal moments. I will read his next novel but hoping it doesn't contain the many sad deaths of characters I enjoy. The death of Mr. Truffles the worst.
Advanced reading copy from netgalley:
I love this series. Every time I pick up a new addition to the series, it is like running into old friends. Mercy and Adam have stayed true to themselves. It has been nice to see Mercy becoming a stronger character in throughout the series.
I enjoyed the plot of Fire Touched and really liked the character of Aiden.
I feel anyone who has been reading the series will be delighted to read the latest addition.
