I read this book in 2 days. Fondakowski, with a group of interviewers, met with and interviewed survivors of the Jonestown massacre. What a sad story. In the attempt to create a community of love and brotherhood, a group of people followed an insane controlling person to their deaths.
I found this book to be fascinating. The interviewers met with many people with different perspectives on their understanding of how Jonestown came to be. The most interesting thing I read was the dichotomy that the former members felt about their time in the Peoples Temple. Many remember it as the best time of their lives and yet it contrasts with the horror of final moments of the massacre.
This is not an easy book but it is a deep exploration into how a group of hopeful people were led to their deaths by a power hungry man.
McFadden is very popular so I thought I would read one of her novels. I didn't like it much. I found the characters annoying and didn't care much about the story by halfway though I just skimmed it to see the final wrap. There is some novels that aren't the best but it feels fun reading them...this isn't one of those novels for me.
Finally catching up on the Buffy graphic novels - enjoyable to be back in the Buffy universe
Didn't like this at all. Got to the point where I just skimmed it. Couldn't get an understanding of any of the characters. It was snapsnots of moments in their lives.
I enjoyed this novel. It is the first in a series involving Inspector Gamache, written by Louise Penny. Penny's most recent novel has gotten a lot of great reviews so I thought I would start the series.
There is definitely a first novel feeling to “Still Life.” It dragged in some spots and there were elements of the book that had no direction. But about a quarter into the book, I wanted to know more about the characters and who had murdered sweet Jane Neal, an fixture in the small town of Three Pines. It had a satisfying ending & I will be picking up more novels written by Louise Penny.
Interesting setup but just didn't catch my attention. Got bogged down halfway through. Scanned through rest of the book to the ending.
This series just gets better with each new book. I think this is the best one I've read. Can't wait to read the next book in the series.
This entry in the series did not appeal to me as much as the previous books. The focus was more on Jean-Guy's struggles than the solving the mystery. The combination of Jean-Guy's struggles and the convoluted story just didn't move me as much as the other entries to the series. I also missed the setting and characters of Three Pines.
Another enjoyable entry in the Mercy Thompson series... but now I have to wait for the next one :(.
Went blueberry picking this past Thurday and afterwards read this book out loud to my 14 year old daughters and several friends. Forgot how much I enjoy this book :)
Really enjoyed this cookbook - one of my favorites from my “Cookin The Books” book group. We tried a lot of great recipes from the book.
Linguine With Cauliflower Pesto
Vinegar Slaw with Cucumbers and Dill
Asparagus Pizza
Tres Leche Rice Pudding
Red Wine Velvet Cake
Broccoli Slaw
Lemon Bars
Black Bean Ragout with Garlic toasts
Blue cheese & Black Pepper Gougeres
Tomato-glazed Meatballs with Mashed Potatoes
Definitely some that I will have to make myself - a personal favorite was the Tomato glazed meatballs.
A great premise executed with great writing - I couldn't stop. I had to see where A and Rhiannon ended up. Satisfying from beginning to end.
It took me a little while to get”into” this book. But once I diet into it, I was all in. I really enjoyed the journey Makkai took me on as she unfolded this story. A lot current events/news obviously influenced the direction of this novel -which made it all the more interesting. Strong recommendation!
Read for my Massachusetts Children's Book Award Book Club - I really enjoyed this book. It deals with Gaby, an eleven year old, who is going through a rough time in her life. Her class is doing a community service at an animal shelter. Gaby has a great empathy for the pets looking for a forever home. She feels like a stray herself since her mother was deported to Honduras.
Read for my reader's advisory book group. Enjoyable mystery -
I like the character of Alex Cross. I am planning on read some more of the series.
