I like this series. But having made it to the fourth book there are elements that are getting a little old. The missing Amish girls & the resolution of the mystery was disturbing especially the twist at the end. So I hope the next book has a mystery that isn't totally centered on the Amish. I have enjoyed the relationship between Katie & Tomasetti. I will continue to read the series as long as they keep my interest. The books make for a quick and interesting read.
Overall I enjoy this series. That said Mike Bowditch drove me slightly crazy in this volume in the series. He kept doing things that I would expect him to get fired as a game warden. He seemed to be almost trying to destroy his career. I am hoping that, as I work my way through the rest of the series, he begins to show some maturity.
I won't rehash the book for you... my review is just to say this is a gripping book. I couldn't stop reading it. I finished it in about a day. There were so many facets to this real life drama. I wanted to know what happened to Lucie Blackman. I was intrigued by the Japanese culture that she found herself in. I wanted to find out how her family dealt with her disappearance and death. I wanted to find out what happened to the last person to see her alive... Parry did an excellent job of telling this story.
A good book that held my attention. I will be giving it a strong recommendation because I believe it will appeal to many readers.
As a reader I was compelled by Jeff and Miranda as the lost and broken children dealing with he disappearance of their mother. Did she leave them? Did their father have something to do with her disappearance? This novel follows them as they navigate life and make choices to survive the loss in their life.
The ending was surprising and worth the build up. Did I stay up late in the night to read to find out how it would be wrapped up? Yes I did!
Thank you to Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine, Bantam and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
It had an interesting premise and I finished it. However.... I felt that this book had some drawbacks - For example, I never got enough backstory on her childhood friend who abandoned her but showed up for the last bit of the book. And why oh why did she ride that mule throughout the book....?
I would try another book by this author but we will see after that ....
Amazing - If you have any interest in learning about Killer Whales in captivity, this book will fully educate you. I couldn't put it down. I read 500+ pages in about 3 - 4 days!
Thought this would be the perfect book to read while traveling through Spain and it was! To be reading a book about Isabelle while being in places that she actually lived made the book come alive for me. I never really knew much about the history of Spain. This book brought Isabella alive for me. A good book if you are a historical fiction fan!
This was my library's October choice for our “Cookin the Books” program. We enjoyed it. We agreed that it is more of a family dinner cook book vs. a special occasion cook book. It was a bit simplistic and it could have used a little more information ie. what size tart pan should be used for the quiche recipe.
Recipes we made: Cowgirly Quiche, Salsa, Whiskey Mustard Meatballs, Brie Stuffed Mushrooms, Cauliflower Soup, Classic hot wings, Mexican Rice, Sesame Noodles, Knock them naked brownies and Apple Brown Betty.
One of the stand outs were the Brie Stuffed Mushrooms.
I suggest the cookbook as a great resource for family dinners.
Amazing... Really liked this book. Green does a great job of bringing Hazel & Augustus to life. Yes there were tears but I am glad I gave the book a chance. Great first book of the year. I am looking forward to reading more of his novels.
Got this book for 99 cents on my nook. I am glad that I found it. I was feeling overwhelmed by my other reading choices :D.
The Cowboy Takes a Bride turned out to be a sweet light read. I got up early and stayed up late to read it. The romance between Mariah & Joe was just what I needed to break my reading “fast”
Enjoyable cozy mystery - loved the library setting and the characters. The murder was the right balance of not too easy or that complicated. I would be interested in reading more of this series.
I hate writing up the plot of books on goodreads (if you want to know the plot just look at the many other reviews)so I will skip that step....
I really enjoyed Akin's journey through the book - the child of two species trying to negotiate them. The main theme: Are humans a violent group of people bent on destroying themselves or can they somehow become enlightened? Butler is an great writer. She really was one of a kind. I can't say that I ‘ve come across any other writers like her. It makes me sad that there aren't more novels out there like this. Deep thoughts with a totally readable, interesting plot and characters.
This book was recommended as a book group read. It fits into the magical realism genre. A family in North Carolina has various magical gifts - one sister has a gift with creating magical food, and one sister has a gift of magical hair styling . . . It was a fun and quick read - I really enjoyed it.
Too much therapy . . .. But the book definitely had me thinking about families and how they work and don't work.
Working at a library has helped me rediscover old friends - this classic was one of them. I read this novel years ago. It is a beautiful story of Celie who goes through horrific treatment before she discovers her own true beauty.
Very interesting book - It explores the lengths a parent will go to protect their child. There is a lot to unpack in this story - the father's perspective, the mother's perspective, and the implications of how our ancestry affects our choices. I have to say I never expected the ending of the book. I would definitely recommend this book. It would make a great book discussion choice.
Truly fascinating biography
Could not put this biography down. Catherine's transition from young bride to the ruler of Russia was amazing. I highly recommend this biography to anyone interested in strong women and/or history.
One of my favorite reads of 2024. A fascinating book based on a real person - a midwife, Martha Ballard (1735-1812). A strong recommendation for anyone who enjoys historical fiction!
Joining Armand and Jean-Guy in solving another murder in Three Pines... For such a beautiful quaint place... there are a surprising amount of murders.
I found this another enjoyable read in the Armand Gamache series. I think Penny just gets better with each installment.
Thumbs up
Re-read this book for my 4th & 5th grade book discussion group. Great book - looking forward to discussing with the kids.
