This book is just TOO much especially after the trigger warning: The assault scene There was no hope at all in the story and it was way too bogged down with despair that after that particular scene I lost interest in reading further.

It's hard not to compare Young Mungo to Shuggie Bain. Both set in the poor areas of Glasgow and they both deal with poverty, neglect and abuse. But, if the Shuggie Bain story has a big heart, Young Mungo has a dark and violent heart. Yes, there are moments of kindness and tenderness, but they don't shine through and pull your heartstrings like they do with Shuggie Bain.
I thought this book was good, but in places it is extremely unpleasant and difficult read.
Ugh, I've reached my limit of devastating and graphic depiction of abuse. Other that this being a little slow for me, albeit we know it's going to be tragic, there was that one scene that made me hang on. Let's move forward.
I ended up reading this novel and another of a similar bent back to back. (No pun intended.) I wrote a review for that other book, which was simultaneously a tacit review of Young Mungo — sort of a compare and contrast. You can read that review on the corresponding Goodreads review page.
Long story short, Young Mungo is top shelf stuff and I barely feel qualified to review what is so obviously a masterpiece. If you want more, check out that other review.
for me personally some parts of the book where definitely 5-star material, like the plot twists that I didn't expect at all!!!
But there were also a lot of scenes that felt kind of boring to me?!
I also struggled with the language a bit as I am not a native English speaker so a lot of the Scottish words/phrases were completely new to me.
I still think it is a great book and I liked how I felt like I know Mungos world and all the side characters
dnf'd at 60%. Could not read it with my current mindset. But I will hopefully come back to it later
Beautiful, heartbreaking and sometimes terrifying. A book about love, and acceptance, and Glasgow. This spoke to me more than Shuggie Bain, I felt I knew this place and these people. Well worth a read and, more than likely, a re-read.
This novel is very much spiritual successor to Douglas Stuart's debut novel Shuggie Bain. It explores much of the same themes, has an identical set up of characters, takes place in the same setting but is more polished in just about every way to the point that I couldn't be annoyed by it.
This book tore my heart apart like A Little Life and I'm glad that NetGalley introduced me to another author, Douglas Stuart, who writes with such mastery and effortlessness. I'm heartbroken about what happened to Mungo but at least I got the chance to see the characters come alive. My only regret is that I didn't read this book much sooner.
Young Mungo est le second roman de Douglas Stuart, après [b:Shuggie Bain 52741293 Shuggie Bain Douglas Stuart https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1602094778l/52741293.SY75.jpg 72463055] que j'ai lu juste avant celui-ci.On y retrouve les motifs, que l'on devine autobiographiques, du premier roman : l'enfant différent qui grandit pendant les années 1980 dans un quartier défavorisé de Glasgow, entre une mère alcoolique, un père absent du paysage, un grand frère et une grande soeur qui tentent de vivre leur vie chacun à leur façon. Au tout début du roman, j'ai d'ailleurs eu peur de relire un peu le même roman que le précédent : même si les prénoms ne sont plus les mêmes, on retrouve le même cadre, le même personnage principal, et le même environnement social et familial. Heureusement, Douglas Stuart apporte quelque chose de plus dans ce cadre connu. Là où Shuggie Bain racontait principalement l'enfance de Shuggie, l'auteur nous propose cette fois de suivre un épisode de l'adolescence de son personnage principal, ici renommé Mungo.Mungo a 15 ans et rencontre James, un catholique de seize ans qui vit dans le quartier en face du sien. Dans ce milieu où des bagarres éclatent régulièrement entre gangs protestants et catholiques, cette relation doit rester secrète. Entre homophobie, tensions religieuses et territoriales, et pression familiale de part et d'autre, tout concoure à séparer les deux jeunes garçons.Le roman nous permet de suivre deux récits parallèles, en léger décalé.D'une part, à partir du mois de janvier, nous assistons à la vie quotidienne de Mungo dans son environnement familial et social, à sa rencontre avec James, et aux débuts de leur relation secrète. Mungo est entrainé contre son gré dans les exactions de son frère aîné, chef du gang protestant du quartier qui s'attaque aux voisins et ennemis catholiques, dont James fait partie.D'autre part, nous suivons un week-end du mois de mai, quand Mungo est emmené en camping par deux hommes que sa mère a rencontré aux Alcooliques Anonymes et auxquels elle a confié son fils pour lui apprendre à pêcher et en faire un homme.Il n'y a pas vraiment d'énorme surprise dans le récit, tout se passe plus ou moins comme on peut s'y attendre dès les premières pages, mais ce n'est pas là l'essentiel. Le récit est sans surprise mais parfaitement déroulé, avec des personnages parfaitement écrits et une atmosphère tragiquement réaliste.Comme je le disais, j'avais peur au début de ma lecture de relire le même roman que le précédent, mais j'ai finalement trouvé celui-ci encore meilleur. Ils s'appuie sur les fondations du premier tout en allant plus loin. Ainsi, l'homosexualité et l'homophobie, qui n'étaient qu'abordées de façon sous-jacente dans le premier roman, sont ici au premier plan. C'est comme si l'auteur avait posé un décor dans Shuggie Bain et qu'il pouvait maintenant l'utiliser pour ajouter une couche supplémentaire à son récit.Vous l'aurez compris, j'ai beaucoup aimé ce roman. C'est une lecture exigeante, parfois déprimante, mais passionnante et absolument utile.
