After about 50% it really picks up. I liked it. Clare and Dorran. I could feel the cold through the book. This book has Amnesia, haunted houses, creatures, wild weather, and a close proximity trope. The creatures in this remind me of an anime I've watched.
Ugh I don't know what to think this wasn't like anything spectacular but I wanna know what happens lol.
Voices in the Snow is dread inducing but also cozy at the same time.
Clare wakes up in an old, gothic home with a stranger and little memory of the last several hours. The stranger claims that he found her on the road in bad shape and brought her back to his home that is vacant for the winter (and very remote) to help her. She's stuck in the house for now as she's injured and there's also a strange snowstorm. Soon Clare starts seeing and hearing strange things and beginning to think the house may have something sinister in it, but her companion at least seems nice and is helping her. As bits of her memory comes back she starts realizing the danger that they're both in.
Darcy Coates writes some of the most atmospheric and eerie yet cozy horror. One minute I was wishing I could be in the remote house and the next I'm quickly changing my mind. When I think of snowstorms I think of curling up by the fireplace with hot cocoa and a book but the reality in this book is that this snowstorm is very claustrophobic and almost sinister. It creates the perfect backdrop to the other happenings going on.
Another thing that Darcy does so well is writing great characters. Clare is someone I can see myself being friends with. Dorran embodies what makes “weird” people so enigmatic but also charming. The plot, the setting, and the characters along with Darcy's writing style had me quickly moving through this book and excited to read the next book in the series. It's the perfect winter read.
this book was fine i guess. pretty much nothing happens the first 50-60% of this book, when the action picked up it wasn't particularly scary, and i felt absolutely nothing for these characters. honestly, i would recommend this more if you're a romance reader and want to try some horror, but otherwise there's no real reason to read this over any other book with similar concepts.
It's July and I was finally able to get to a book store. This pandemic is really hurting my routine of going to the bookstore one every month picking up my fix of physical books and going on about my day. I made it to B&N and they had a display of books that said. “Read with the Lights on” and this book was on that shelf and I see why. First, I will say while horror is always in my wheelhouse this dystopian style is not. This was a quick read easy to follow and enjoyable.
It starts off with Clare wanting to relax like she normally does on Sundays, with a good book. I have to say the concept of doing nothing but reading an entire Sunday has become more appealing after reading this book. it seems however the world has other plans for Clare at least. The cities all over the world are suddenly going quiet and dark. She tries to reach her sister Beth and her aunt Marnie but gets trapped in a snow storm. The more you read the more you realize they can't be contacted. It seems that anyone who goes into a dark zone never comes out. There is not one person who knows what is going on and the quiet zones are spreading. The plan was that she would bunker down with her sister she never makes it. She has a car crash in a forest area. She wakes up in a stranger's mansion with a guy taking care of her. His name is Dorran. And she initially can't remember everything that happened Sunday morning before the crash. As more time passes in the house the creepier things get.
I must say I absolutely loved the atmosphere and the crazy winter weather! The atmosphere, the weather and the mansion which was following apart which I loved and were so well done. The first half of the book is slow but I was never bored. I was taken with what I was learning about the world, the setting, the creepy old house that's falling apart, the characters. I had a sense that something was wrong in the house for the majority of the book and I loved it. I really enjoyed the characters, Clare and Dorran are such an interesting pair and the dynamic is different. I love how I thought the book was going to go one way and it went a complete other way. I will be reading book two in this series when I take down the pile of stuff that I have started.
Darcy Coates is my favorite horror author. The way that she tells a story will leave you on the edge of your seat and make you jump at every little noise.
This book was no exception. I was lying in bed like:
I wasn't actually sure that I would like this book as much. My type of horror is ghosts. Just straight up spooky bitches roaming the halls and watching you from a dark corner of the room. My least favorite type of supernatural being is zombies. Now, that's not exactly what these are, but they are extremely similar.
This book should have been everything that I despised. I hate reading dystopian, I hate Zombie-like creatures & I don't usually care for romance in my horror books. So, yeah I should have totally hated this one...but I didn't. This book was so well written that I didn't want to put it down. I liked both of the characters even though they were both infuriating at times. The vibe of this story was super creepy. I mean, off the bat you have this spooky ass house & then you have this dark forest filled with creatures outside of it.
The romance aspect was very subtle, but sweet nonetheless. I would definitely recommend this one to people who like horror and dystopian fiction.
