I really liked this book while I was reading it; it was face-paced, held my interest, and had no glaring issues. But stepping back, I'm already forgetting a lot of the finer points of this story. From the characters to the generic plot, it ended up being pretty forgettable. But I definitely still liked it.

it was quite cheesy at the beginning, and it was sold to me as a story of friendship, but it's really more of Halley discovering who she is ad learning to value herself through this relationship and how its unhealthy.

I don't have any negative feelings towards this book, but all of the relationships and topics and goals of the book felt underbaked and not delved into enough. I felt like much of the page time was spent on stuff I didn't care about while leaving the important elements (i.e. a fleshed-out discussion about assault or developing the relationship at the beginning rather than introducing the characters and then saying “we text all the time, we're such good friends”) to be summed up in one conversation.

i actually liked this better than shadow and bone for a couple reasons:

i also found myself more engaged and having strong feelings about the characters, albeit negative ones cough mal cough
it was still messy and nothing happened until the end and alina is a still a piece of white bread i had a better time reading this, probably because i listened to it

just had such a hard time getting into this book. Although this book was good, I expected a lot more from it. I had such high expectations and it fell very flat for me. It was hard to follow a lot of the times and the magic was so imprecise and unexplained it confused me more than intrigued me. I did thoroughly enjoy all the characters though. I'm hoping I like the next one more.
