I love all of Colleen Hoover's books and this one is no exception.
Tate is an independence young woman, except when it comes to Miles, her brother's tortured and complex best friend who lives across the hall.
Miles has a LOT of baggage from the past (and we get to see that in alternating points of view, with his 6 years earlier.)
A lot of steam in this one and I really wanted Miles to get his act together, which he finally does.
Another page turner from Colleen.
I went into this book with my expectations much too high. Its definitely a great book with the usual incredible plot twist i did not at all see coming but I definitely connected less to these characters than in some of Colleen's other work and it took me a lot longer to get hooked into the story as well. I think i wouldve enjoyed it more if my expectations had been lower.
“Love isn't always pretty. Sometimes you spend all your time hoping it'll eventually be something different. Something better. Then, before you know it, you're back to square one, and you lost your heart somewhere along the way.”WOW would you believe it if I said I finished this in 4 HRS!?!?If I could rate this a 10 out of 5 stars I WOULD!!this is amazingg I was scared to pick this up coz it was an over-hyped book but it lived up to its expectations and much more!“God gives us the ugliness so we don't take the beautiful things in life for granted.”I didn't cry and I was glad for that but Mile's backstory broke.my.heart into a million pieces. I wasn't a fan of him at first but as the story went on I started liking him more and more.“It's the beautiful moments like this that make up for the ugly love”Another reason I didn't want to pick this up was coz it had the fwb trope but it was so much more than that, this book will take ur heart and break it into a million pieces and then fix it a bit and give it back to you...If the above reasons are whats putting you off from reading the book don't hesitate to read it...coz you might end up loving it!I wasn't able to think of anything at all after reading this which is surprising coz I didn't even expect to like it. “I didn't fall in love with you... I flew.” Saved the best quote for last :) [a:Colleen Hoover 5430144 Colleen Hoover https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1464032240p2/5430144.jpg] how do you do this?!! this is a book about romance between a doormat and a shoe which constantly smacks the doormat. It was really romantic and made me all tingly, especially when he called the doormat by the wrong name.
sorry i just had to
worst writing style btw what the fuck were miles' pov chapters. it gave me headache
rating- 2.5/5
this review contains spoilers.
2.5 stars only for cap:) and because it made me cri. i.e, evoked emotion which is a good sign.
I HATE that this was marketed as a book with two people who are with each other only for sex, and i had to read a convoluted pov with a really immature voice for like 70 % of the book.
The Miles-Tate dynamic completely undermined miles' tragic backstory and his issues with dealing with his grief. This was Miles' story. Tate had zero contribution to the plot whatsoever, except for letting Miles walk all over her until he sorts his issues out.
Something else that bothered me was how different Mile's pov chapters in the past were in comparison to the rest of the book. his inner monologue was just VERY weird? like it's not only the centre alignment. (which i think was supposed to make it seem like a poem?? idek at this point.) Like it's literally just a normal pov writing but centre alignment. RachelRachelI'm talking to her.I tell her my name is miles. (that. but in centre alignment. almost his entire pov is centre aligned. I don't know why that's so weird to me, but like the waste of space for absolutely no reason, bothers me.)
Apart from this, his past pov was also weird to me because it seemed like the author was trying to portray him as a kid/ immature somehow. I remember there was something about them ‘playing house' which was just plain weird. They're 17 i think? i don't know if Colleen Hoover was trying to be poetic / metaphorical, it just ended up making me feel super uncomfortable. Like okay? she's pregnant, they live together and they're young. i get it. but ‘playing house'??...
The past plot was pretty okay (except for the incestuous and pro-life tones) but the writing was just not it, for me. While, the present Tate-Miles plot was trash but I liked the writing in this case (because she wasn't trying to be poetic/centre alignic)
This was my first Colleen Hoover book and i see why people like her so much, the emotional impact of the book was definitely there?.. Although the writing style wasn't my favourite, I do have a few other CoHo books on my tbr i want to read, so we'll see how that goes:')
honestly, i really enjoyed this book. this was my first book by Colleen Hoover that i've read and i certainly was not disappointed. this book is the first book to make me cry in SO long and my first five star read in quite a while. i loved all of the characters (besides Dillon obviously) and the character growth was inspiring.
So umm besties idk how to tell you that I hated the pacing in this and the writing was very not for me. I was originally going to give this like a two-star because of that and because I didn't connect to the characters, but I really loved the themes. I see what Ms. Colleen was trying to do and I can appreciate that despite the many flaws I had with it.
i enjoyed theorising what had happened. some of my theories were way off the mark but most were spot on.
final thoughts: there was so much self-inflicted pain. these characters really need therapy.
Bland as f*ck. So utterly unmemorable.
This novel had that thing some authors do in wich when there is something happening or a dialogue, they drop in the middle of the conversation/action to have a 3 paragraph description of something, preferably the gushing look of the male protag or the mind ramblings of the girl. Then continue as nohing happens. It makes me crazy. It makes me want to reread some Ilona Andrews, where action is action, dialogue is dialogue and descriptions are sprinkled along but moderately.
Also: Why does everybody have to be pregnant to be a HEA
I'm wrecked. Absolutely wrecked. This was beautiful. Powerful. Depressing. Almost cried but I was listening to this at work so I had to keep it together.
Points taken off for the writing style when told through Miles' POV. Read very much like “Aristotle and Dante discover the secrets of the universe” which was weird, because Miles is an adult. It also semi-took away from the story.
Also points off for the love story crossing far into cheesy territory and not enough of an emotional connection built between the two characters. Not a very believable connection nor something I was necessarily rooting for.
However, the sub-story that was told through Miles' story made up for any of that.
I couldnt put this book down. I kept thinking, TATE, TELL HIM NO. Gosh. I was left with so many emotions after Sam... Just wow. Beautiful writing. I will be adding more Colleen Hoover to my list.
Oh
My god.
Every single chapter that started with Six Years Earlier made me want to crawl into a corner and weep. Just weep for hours and hours and hours.
Deeply, deeply, deeply emtional, I was so surprised, I literally picked this book up 8 hours ago. It's 1am, I just finished and I have school tomorrow. So, yep.
It's so addicting.
Amazing.
Tragic.
Wonderful.
All the feels.
I didn't have many expectations for this book, I just knew there was going to be a lot of sex and a mysterious pilot. Never did I think that it would have so much depth. It was just so much that what I expected. and I loved it. It almost made me cry and I just loved it so much.
I started this book last night. I LOVED it more then i think I can even express this is my first book by this author but I have a feeling that it will not be my last. Tate and Miles are amazing. The sadness the Joy. this was a roller coaster i did not want to get off of.
“The difference between the ugly side of love and the beautiful side of love is that the beautiful side is much lighter. It makes you feel like you're floating. It lifts you up. Carries you. The beautiful parts of love hold you above the rest of the world. They hold you so high above all the bad stuff, and you just look down on everything else and think, Wow. I'm so glad I'm up”
First loves are beautiful sometimes they are amazingly tragic. this book makes you fall in love with not only the characters but with the ugly and beautiful parts of love.
“It's the beautiful moments like these that make up for the ugly love.”
This book wasn't at all Ugly, but it was not as beautiful or as captivating as what of other Mareng Colleen's books were, however this is such an achievement as what have read at the acknowledgement, this is her 8th book. Impressive.
Let's start with the setting, Miles being a Pilot is an immense turn on, I only know one pilot and he's such a nice lad.
Anyway, Miles six years ago was irritating, or at least how he.., thinks things? I don't know, the idea the way his POV was written made me question if is it really how Miss Hoover really wanted to do things. Yes, I doubted her, sorry but you'll get over it. The thing is, I wasn't getting it. It kind of reminded me of Walt Whitman's style in poetry, because a lot of times, it doesn't have many sense, doesn't even rhyme or completely out of context, and he's one of the best ones I know. I'm saying this because almost the entire chapters of Miles' POV were like that, it was a slow phased theme and it got me tired. I mean, yeah, I got Slammed, I love Slammed because of the poetry, on how it was incorporated but I feel like this would have been better without it. The entire time I am on his POV, I get sucked in, the longer it was, the more I feel of Miles' intensity and how everything is flowing flawlessly and then we switch to Tate's POV and the style entirely changes. Then again almost at the end, it changed to a normal way then, BAM! It back again. Ugh.
You know I love poetry girl, but I'm tellin yah, when I want to read a damn straight book, I would appreciate a goddamn straight book.
The story was cool, I actually appreciate the side characters more than the main ones, I specially loved Corbin. I might have swooned a little when he was overly protective of Tate. ;)
Speaking of Tate, yes, I think she might be the first of Miss Hoover's female characters that I like, (give me a minute) Yes. She is the first one. She's different, maybe because she was older or something? Or maybe she already know what she wants in life and she's already there, making her wants happen, with her job and school, she totally is. Or maybe because of Corbin. ;)
And has anyone of you noticed how Miss Hoover likes staring contests? I did, I looked back on her other books and was candidly giddy that I noticed it. I don't mind, I like staring contests. ;)
I loved this book however I was a bit disappointed we didn't get to know more of Miles. I felt the chapters from his POV were rushed and I couldn't get into his relationship with Rachel, nor did I feel as bad as I should have when it was revealed what happened to cause Miles to swear off love forever. I would love to read this same story completely from Miles's POV a la This Girl or Losing Hope.
