would bounce back and forth about really liking this book to eh, I like this book... many times. It's probably more of a 3.5 for me. I could relate a lot to Liz and the illustrations of this book are really nicely done. I think it's really important that this book addresses gender and how stupid society norms can really be. I liked its message ultimately. It was a great book about coming of age and I would recommend it to all and young middle grade readers especially! ~Ashley
I LOVED this book! Parallels my own life in so many ways (especially in the ‘90s), I'm thrilled it's out there for other tomboys like me and Liz. I'm extremely disappointed at whatever Karens decided this book should be banned. Girls who are having this same journey need to know they are not alone!! I don't usually read graphic novels, but I was immediately interested by the title and cover and it was a great read.
(7/4/2023) this was way less queer than i thought it would be, which is not necessarily a bad thing! it's an interesting examination of the author's relationship to femininity and “girlhood” and the gender binary while growing up, but while it touches on feeling uncomfortable in your body and wanting to be a boy because boys got to do cooler stuff it does deviate from the “typical” trans narrative in a way that's closer to my own experience.
I too always felt like a “tomboy” growing up. I still prefer jeans and tee-shirts. So I really enjoyed this book. I wish I could have read something with its message when I was a kid.
It's stories like this that remind me how awful our society can be about gender roles. Liz Prince just perfectly nailed the way I've always felt growing up.
Super great and affirming. Perfect for anyone who feels like they don't fit in.
