What did I read?
Nothing of the blurb gives away that this story is actually set in modern day New England, complete with smartphones and SUVs. Made me halt when I started reading. Then when she's at the school, there is no reason to think that we are in modern times (no mention of anything more modern than paper - including letter openers). So setting was already an issue for me that made no real sense. But I guess authors choice, whatever, fine.
Now characters. There wasn't much relation between characters from the FMC to others. Well, besides lusting over the age-old school director. Which in itself is already problematic.
And last, the plot. Um, what plot? Some revenge served with a side dish of, oh, the dirty deed. Maybe I was not paying enough attentional the „actual“ plotting and scheming but the finale came out of nowhere and I still don't know what happened. I was way too confused as to how it ended up as it is, and not in a good way.
As a fan of this author’s other series, I came into The Coven with high expectations. However, I’m finding myself ending the journey here. Body positivity is important, but the approach in this book didn’t resonate with me. There’s a line between promoting self-love and veering into territory that feels like overexplanation or objectification, which unfortunately, this book crossed for me.
In a moment meant to celebrate the character’s self-confidence, the focus becomes strangely fixated on weight in a way that doesn’t feel empowering but rather uncomfortable and unneeded. Describing an entire scene around whether someone can physically carry her seemed counterproductive to authentic body positivity.
I wanted to love this series, but this paragraph and others like it have pushed me to stop reading. It’s not what I’m looking for in terms of representation or storytelling. I’ll stick to the author’s other works but will be moving on from The Coven.
This book was interesting. I don't really know what to say except I was pleasantly surprised at the end of the book. I still really liked it and the magic as well.
I read this in one day, I was hooked from the beginning. I loved the FMC and MMC and the connection they had. The slow burn and banter was great and so was the story.
Can't wait to read the next one.
No tuvo muchas escenas +18 pero el plot twist del final si que no lo vi venir, cuando pensaba que ya era suficiente se volvio todo aun más peor.
No me termino de agradar el prota
idk?? this had so much potential until it scared the ever living crap out of me (that's my bad tho, i saw the trigger warnings). also just not sure how to reflect after that ending. i'm just gonna go stare at the wall now
Wow!! This book is PHENOMENAL!!!
I don't even know where to start. The story was BRILLIANT!! The characters... Perfection...
I already ordered the hardcover of this book. I loved everything about it.
It is deliciously dark and loaded with triggers... The kind of triggers that make your toes curl. What can you expect from this romantasy...
❤️dark academia
❤️morally gray
❤️enemies to lovers
❤️forbidden love
What wasn't brilliant? The cliffhanger at the end just because I dispise them!
4 stars.
This was really hard to rate, I wanted to rate it 2 stars but I guess it can be 3?
I really like the magic system but it could've been written and explained so much better. The story felt messy and disconnected.
I liked Willow and Gray, they had a lot of potential.
I think the bigger issue is the writing cause everything else was really interesting and I would've loved this book if it was more in depth and thought out.
4 Stars
I loved the beginning. Willow was ahead of other witches her age and very witty and sassy. I liked the different witch categories and strengths; Red, White, Crystal, Green, Blue, and Black witch groups.
Vampires are Vessels. There is a professor- Student relationship. Enemies to lovers, but still very much enemies. Good spice and tension
I mean holy fuck. I am not a fantasy reader but holy fuck. This might be my ACOTAR if you know what I'm saying. This book had me itching for my own revenge, wanting to inflict some much needed pain on a few specific characters, AND THE TENSION BETWEEN THE MAIN CHARACTERS AAAAHHH. I am in a reading slump and I confidently say this book has taken me out. I want to immediately jump into a new book. Under 300 pages, mystery/suspense plot, witches, vampires, and the ending was mwah
