From the bestselling author of The Other Boleyn Girl, Philippa Gregory, comes a wonderfully atmospheric evocation of the court of Henry VIII and his final queens.

Okay, the amount of Philippa Gregory I read is officially embarrassing. I have nothing to say in my defense except that a friend got two copies for Christmas, and gave her extra to me. This might actually be my favorite so far. Gregory always does a great job with multiple narrators, and here, two of the three narrators are the wives of Henry VIII whom the least is known about: Anne of Cleves and Katherine Howard. It being the Tudor court, there's plenty of dirt, and it's a quick, easy read. I tore through it on during the flights to and from my interview at Kansas, continually telling myself that people in airports weren't giving me skeptical looks about my literary leanings.
Spoilers
there was the repetitive nature of Jone Boleyn being haunted and “volia” got a little old, but bigger than that was it was said that they thought that Katherine was pregnant and then it was never mentioned again. That's supposed to be a pretty big concern.
Additionally, I felt that I never got an accurate sense of what Anne of Cleaves looked like.
Other than that it was as expected
This book was written about Anne of Cleves, Katherine Howard and Jane Boleyn which are characters that aren't usually spoken about much in depth. Philippa Gregory really took these characters and gave them so much life. I enjoyed the insight into Henry's fourth and fifth wife and the madness they endured because of King Henry VIII.
Wonderful book and I'd recommend it to anyone who loves Historical Fiction.
