This is my fourth book from Lucinda Berry, and just like her other ones, i thoroughly enjoyed reading this. I was hooked from beginning to end, and i know people are are complaining about the ending being rushed, but this is actually the best ending I've read from her so far lol
As usual, Lucinda Berry is excellent with writing the themes of women struggling with their teenage sons, and this time there was 3 families to keep up with, which was a little bit challenging but it worked. I loved reading the domestic abuse storyline too, I think that was done really well.
Also as per usual, she makes her stories so gut wrenchingly emotional and her characters so easy to relate and sympathise with.
First book by this author, and enjoyed it! Read it all in one day. Though it wasn't particularly super twisty and shocking, it kept me reading. The only drawback was that it kept me confused the first 1/4 of the book keeping track between the different mothers and their families. They all read very similar and couldn't remember who their sons were.
The thriller and mystery aspect was meh but this author does such a good job with writing characters and domestic drama
I'm not usually one to rate a book one star. But this book bored me to death. Nothing happened that shocked me after the first few chapters. It just felt like a slog and miscommunication all around. I almost DNF'd it halfway but kept trudging along.
Devoured this in a day.
My first Lucinda Berry novel, won't be my last.
3 best friends have sons who are best friends too and when there's a fatal shooting, their secrets begin to unravel.
A page turner.
This book came up on my recommended list on my kindle and I was intrigued.
This story revolves around three friends who's sons are also friends. There is a tragic accident and one of the boys is dead, another on life support, and the third survived but has not been able to speak or function due to the shock of the incident and the story unfolds as to what really happened. That's basically the story in a nutshell, the mothers all harbor secrets, which baffled me as I tell my best friend almost everything, and the three have some major secrets I just can't imagine holding in.
I have a big complaint about this story! The story bounces between each friend and I felt I had to constantly look up or read back to verify who was who. I've read many a story with more than one POV and have never felt this lost. Based on this I gave it two stars, and the extra star was because in the midst of my confusion the awakening these woman each meet as a mother was relatable.
Plot Details
The Best of Friends is the story of three mothers and their families. The mothers are Dani, Lindsey, and Kendra, and they were all friends since high school. They have kids about the same age, including three teenage boys, Sawyer, Jacob, and Caleb. At the very beginning of the book, a tragedy occurs, which changes all their lives forever. The details of what really happened that night are unknown to all but the three boys that were there. What really happened? And can the ladies and their families ever recover from it?
My Thoughts
This book was a great find! I don't remember exactly how I came across it, but I added it to my list of books I wanted to read. And I was right to do so. I loved the mysteries in this book and how they all played out. I have seen some other reviews where the confusion of all the characters was mentioned. That's the only reason I'm dropping from five stars to four on this one. It did help me to keep notes from the beginning on who was in each family and what their circumstances were. I liked that each mother had her own things going on on top of the main tragedy. The Best of Friends had a lot of facets to it. The main storyline was a mystery, trying to determine what exactly happened “that night”. But because of what happened, a lot of other threads were revealed along the way as well. It gave me something to wonder about the whole way through the book, with additional details I never thought of popping up too.
If you like psychological thrillers as well as a good mystery and some good twists, I'd highly recommend this one. I definitely plan to check out more by this author for sure.
