I don't know if I can finish this.
post-apocalyptic ya... ugh.
Once the action stops, I realize I hate the characters, the plot, the everything. Sorry everyone, it seems I simply can't like this genre.
So this book is getting a temporary DNF, until I decide to force my way through it like I did with divergent... sigh.
Very good writing and interesting characters. I am looking forward to reading the next book.
I remember seeing the movie trailer and going hrmmm. Remember starting the movie and not much else. So when I spotted this book at the library I got super curious. What actually happened. What's the 5th wave. Etc
Now it had a lot of the tropes. Badass girl. Girl not being noticed. Girl falling for pretty boy. And honestly none of them felt too much or overwhelming. I got super curious about things, and enough time was spent on the main characters that I got invested. Only had one real moment near the start of “huh. That's an odd choice for a male writer of a female character to do”.
Was it the best thing ever? Not by a long shot. But it kept me interested and I may even pick up the sequels sometime
Ps. Tried watching the movie again tonight. It was absolutely aweful.
Honestly, I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this book... I definitely enjoyed parts of it, but there were other times where I was a little confused - not by the events but of the reaction of the narrator. Also, I think I personally just can't relate to the fmc, Cassie. And one specific phrase just really bugged me bc of her ‘oh I'm the only person who's suffered and know tragedy' attitude. I totally get it cause I have a pretty good life and even I can get in those funks, but it just got to the point where it was annoying to read...
Now, I did really like the fact that you as the reader FELT the loneliness, distrust, and fear of being the last person but also of encountering other people. I will say, that while I didn't LOVE his writing, he did manage to transport me emotionally into the story- at least until she's ‘rescued'... what I mean is, I usually end up watching a movie when I'm reading (it's not a full emotional connection to the character and the events..?), rather than feeling like I am experiencing it (like being transported as the mc to that time/place). Idk if this makes sense 100%... I might come back and polish up my review later
3.5 rounded up
This book started out very strong and at first I was certain it was going to be a 5 star novel, that the hype was warranted, then I realized the movie wasn't entirely to blame for the things I found annoying. It's decently well written but too long for my tastes and having to follow a character that left me indifferent just wasn't the best experience.
Will I come back to read the rest of the series? I might stop there for fear that my least favourite YA trope (love triangle) might veer into cringe inducing territory.
Actual rating: 4.5 This was great!!! I really enjoyed it and I'm glad I gave it a chance. However, I've been reading the reviews for the rest of the series and they don't seem very good, so I'm not sure if I should buy the rest of the books.
*2.5
the last 30% saved it for me tbh..
ps. the movie waz better in my opinion. Idk if i will continue in the series

This is one of those books that switches perspectives between different characters periodically. The audiobook uses two different readers, which helps narrow down whose section you're in. The main two perspectives are the Girl and the Boy.
We start with the Girl and miles of flashbacks. I found Girl tedious. She's not accomplishing anything, just surviving and emoting about how much her situation sucks. About twenty percent through the book, it abruptly switches to Boy, which feels weird by then. But Boy actually does stuff and learns stuff about the situation. He interacts with people! I don't usually read male perspective YA books but this time it's way better. There are a couple other perspectives in small doses.
The story is okay but there's zero conclusion at the end of the first book (typical YA trilogy style).
Gelombang 1 listrik padam, gelombang 2 tsunami, gelombang 3, wabah, gelombang 4 silencer yg bertugas membunuhi sisa populasi. Namun masih ada gelombang 5, itulah yg diceritakan disini.
Gelombang 5 dijalankan secara licik, teliti & terstruktur dgn memanfaatkan sisa populasi yg selamat dari 4 gelombang sblmnya.
THIS IS AN OVERALL SERIES REVIEW -
I haven't read a good sci-fi novel or series since the hunger games.
this was truly amazing and beats the hunger games hands down any day.
I haven't read a book as quickly as I'd read any of the hunger games books.
this was a book that I lost track of time with.
I was completely and utterly absorbed in the world that was contained within the 500 + pages of this book. In fact , the whole series too.
it is officially one of my favourite sci-fi series I have read to date.
I enjoyed all the books which was something I wasn't expecting because of the reviews about The Last Star ( 3rd and final book) .
Yes I might've cried on the plane while I finished this series. The tears were worth their time in my opinion.
I wish I could read the series again without knowing what happens because I feel that it was just that wonderful.
the characters will for sure be ones that shall remain with me for years to come and I am ever so glad that I finally jumped into this series.
love , bookishwolf :)
Wow!
This book managed to hit every emotion for me! It was a fantastic work of horror, a really well written romance, a wonderful heist novel, and a brilliant conspiracy thriller rolled into one book. The characters were incredible, and I loved each of them. The romance particularly stands out to me because a lot of YA novels of this type do that part the least well, but I fully adored the romance in this one.
The concept is pretty cool. It's a bit too stylistically like other attractive teens save the world from some disaster type movies and books that are out there. That said, I'm interested enough to read the next two.
I love how it didn't take forever to build the story up it just got right into it. The one and only thing that got me to start with is the book is told in sections and each section is from different peoples point of view. To begin with I was really confused but after a little bit I got used to it and I could figure out who's point of view each section was in. I like how The main character Cassie is a bad ass. I like how Bens character grew throughout this book and through everything there were some that kept their humanity. I wish we weren't left with such a huge cliffhanger though. I mean what happened to Evan and the rest of the kids?
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It was recommended to me by a friend and based on her description it sounded like just another YA dystopian story along the lines of Maze Runner, Hunger Games, Divergent, etc.... I'll admit that I enjoyed those for what they were and gave this one a shot because of that.
The first thing I noticed when I started reading this was that it's not necessarily a book intended for a YA audience. Sure, it has all the elements YA fiction, but the language was an immediate tip-off that this isn't meant for kids. Also, much to my delight, I found that the story was much darker than the recent influx of YA dystopian stories.
I enjoyed it more than I thought I would and I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

I was really surprised by this. It's a very good alien invasion type book. Despite being YA and having some romance in it, it doesn't focus on the romance (something that has annoyed me in other books (I'm talking about you Across The Universe grumble grumble)). Also it has a bunch of references to Star Wars and Star Trek which was nice. For example: “And there was his face against the smudged glass and his smile as he rocketed across a galaxy far, far away in his yellow X-wing starfighter, jumping to warp speed, until the dusty yellow space-ship was swallowed by dust.”
