as good as this book was it was not for me, It took until the 3rd part for me to understand a thing that was going on, as soon as i had gotten to that part I couldn't put the book down but even then after I finished it it felt as if I still didn't understance 80% of the book.
I know there is a second book but I dont plan on reading it any time soon.
I only have one Grishaverse book left and it's making me very sad because I love them.
Entertaining read which kept you on your toes until the end. Nice cliffhanger to get you to read the next book.
I wanted to love this but for some reason, I didn't. Took me a while to get through the book and I didn't find myself wanting to pick it up. I feel like I am the exception so please pick this book up yourself and see if it's something you would like. It was not bad at all, it was just okay, which is ok.. I think it helped having seen the tv show so I had faces to the names and I understood the magic system. If I did not watch the show, I would be pretty lost and I would recommend reading Shadow & Bone first. In theory, I like heist stories but it just didn't give me the feeling I was looking for. I will most likely finish the duology and read Crooked Kingdom because I would like to know how it ends, but it might be a while as I have so many other books I am looking forward to reading. Again, it's a good book, just not as amazing as I thought it would be based on the review rating.
This was a refreshing shift from her earlier work, offering a heist-driven narrative that's thrilling and well-crafted. Unlike the melodrama of Shadow and Bone, this novel focuses on action and intrigue, wrapped around a diverse cast of characters. The heist is the star, but the characters, each with their own depth and quirks, help bring the story to life. It's a fast-paced ride with enough twists to keep you engaged, though it avoids veering into shocking plot twists. It's a compact, yet satisfying adventure.

The heist was twisty, which was nice.
However, the characters didn't really have a chance to develop.
Didn't realize that this book was the first in a subset of a wider universe, nor that it would have supernatural and fantasy-like elements to the ‘heist' story. With that, the prose is tight enough that you don't get lost in the ‘world-building' or with too many different sects/factions/tribes and a whole new glossary of terms. While it does have the necessary pieces of said elements, it's not overdone and is easy enough to follow. Add solid, quick character building and an intriguing enough plot, and you have a very readable story. Bit of a dungeons and dragons feel to it with the makeup and gathering of the crew, but the action scenes are just okay as they feel like they are missing a tad more depth or layer in the writing.
It's true young adult fiction but I found I couldn't get into it. I think primarily because of the age of the characters. The main characters are 15 years old but behave and speak as if they're in their mid 30s.
Very fun heist story with great characters! I have mixed feelings about the world building, but overall it's good.
3.75
sadly this was not an amazing 5 star read for me as i hoped it would be. i love all the characters ( jesper and wylan my beloved ) but i could not care less abt the heist and all that sorry. it wasn't what i expected at all but i will continue with the series just for the characters alone
note: i don't fucking remember when i started it but ehhhhh
i'm absolutely mindblown, i KNEW it would be a blast
that's also the last book of my yearly challenge!! :)
EDIT: WAIT IT'S A TRILOGY
I'm kind of a stickler for reading books in order, but when I found out this series could be read as a standalone, I was excited to dig right in. But before I begin, I must give thanks to all of my GR buddies out there. If not for the community, this book would not have crossed my radar, and I would have missed out on a fun adventure.
❖ Quick Summary: A merchant hires a rag-tag team of miscreants to hunt down the inventor of jurda parem, which gives the user otherworldly abilities.
Okay, so after thinking about the action-packed, rip-roaring last few chapters, I think I have come to a conclusion. I really enjoyed the heck out of this one! It had just the right amount of world-building, humor, charisma, and fun. The author has a keen sense of how to maneuver the characters around some hefty themes while still taking the time to get to know each and every one person in the team. Speaking of, let's do a quick rundown.
“When everyone knows you're a monster, you needn't waste time doing every monstrous thing.”
Kaz Brekker – all-around witty criminal mastermind. cool name, right?
Inej Ghafa – a spy, an acrobat, and a strong-willed idealist. best character IMO
Jesper Fahey – gambler extraordinaire and a heck of a shot.
Matthias Helvar – a grumpy dude who has differentiated opinions on loyalty and love.
Nina Zenik - a kind soul and Heartrender who can manipulate the body.
Wylan Van Eck – explosive expert.
“The heart is an arrow. It demands aim to land true.”
In a nutshell, Kaz must lead the group into a fortified area to retrieve the inventor of the drug and make it out scot-free. Sounds easy, right? Not so fast! They must climb incinerators, take out some guards without raising alarms, and, oh, do it while some of the team members are at each other's throats. It's a fun little espionage thriller where the banter is high and the swashbuckling is intense meteoric. (meteoric?? Wait, does that make sense in this context? Hmm. Well, it sounds good, so I'll keep it. It's staying here. I stand by it. Lol. Look at me internalizing thoughts and writing them down. Geez, move on already.)
4.8 but only because it took me so long to get through...
The world-building, jokes, characters, the plot are all AMAZING!!
4.75 for not giving me a single Wylan POV
Other than that I am in love with every part of this book.
The characters are so well rounded, especially Kaz and Inej, and I really appreciate that we get to know all of their back stories. The character developement of some of the Crows is also on point.
I watched the Shadow and Bone Series before reading the book so I already knew parts of the plot, and yet there was so much that I never would have expected.
I adore the writing style in this, and the plot twists were so well done. I never saw them coming and when they were revealed small things that seemed insignificant before suddenly made so much sense. I kind of want to read it again just to see what I missed the first time.
I was also (very positively) surprised to find that a lot of the dialogue I loved in the show was word for word quoted from the book.
All in all this is definitely my favorite book I have read in 2023 so far, and I am very much looking forward to reading Crooked Kingdom!
2.8/5 stars
Update I didn't love it. I am genuinely surprised I didn't like it considering that it had all the factors for me to love it. Don't get me wrong, I love the characters, especially Inej. Unfortunately, I wasn't pulled into the story, and it took me an eternity to finish this book. The pace threw me off so much. It felt like it went so slowly. There were moments where I was invested, but by the time I got to the heist, I was genuinely just skimming through in order to get it done. I haven't quite quit on the series yet since I really love the characters, but if the pacing doesn't get better, I might just have to give up on it and perhaps give it another chance later on.
4.75 - lovedddd this!!! I was completely hooked start to finish and absolutely adored every single character and their, at times, complex relationships.
So much better than the shadow and bone trilogy and honestly i dont think you need to read that trilogy to understand this one.
Kaz/Inej brainrot FOREVER. I laughed. I cried. I laughed some more and WEPT EVEN MORE. And then I laughed again. A rollercoaster of emotions. My friends had been begging me to read this book for years and finally caved—it's my first 5 star of the year (and will be one of the few, more than likely) and my heart is so full but also shattered. These silly little teenagers will live in my head rent free for the rest of my life.
