No idea why I waited so long to read this book. I've tried multiple times before but I really enjoyed it. Kaz and crew are delightful
never in my LIFE have i ever said i had a favorite book. well - that has now changed.
Don't come at me: I didn't love it.
But I didn't hate it, either. At the end of the day, if you give me an action-packed novel with a trope I love, I will always enjoy it. But I've been told by a million people to read it, and I didn't fall in love with it right off the bat.
But what I appreciated about this book is how much it made me want to read the sequel. This duology bleeds into the next book more flawlessly than I've ever seen. One of the reasons it made me bitter was the lack of character growth, but there were hints of it taking place further in the plot.
I ended up tolerating even the most annoying characters in the end, and I was itching to read the next book. It was a good start.
i just love this book so much, i felt like i literally just lived through everything with them. leigh, you're a goddess of writing and this is truly a masterpiece and i loved every single second of it.
the dynamics, the chemistry, THE PLOT LIKE YESSJEBRNSNJDNDJDJDJDD. I CANNOT WAIT TO FINISH THE DUOLOGY.
truly beautiful, i loved every character and every single duo. i loved the complexity of each character and how they came to be. it was just so perfect and i love this book so so much and i'll be rereading this for the rest of my life
I liked the plot and the world-building, but the writing not so much. It felt choppy (or maybe I've just gotten quite used to the classics I've been reading of late), the characters somehow clichéd. I'd recommend this book to a middle-schooler or maybe a high-schooler rather than my usual reading buddies.
It did end in a bit of a cliff-hanger which is perhaps the only reason why I'll be reading the second book in the Duology.
Amazing. I love how Leigh is expanding the universe without making it bored. Because I've watched the series first, I can see how they changed the actual plot. I just hope we get the other characters on the second season because I need Wylan on the show asap. What a glorious little big brain <3
Truly excellent book, picked it up after watching through Shadow and Bone and I could not be more excited to read the next one.
No mourners.
I know that I am going to be in the minority here but I have to say that I liked Shadow and Bone better than this one. I had a hard time connecting with the characters in this book. I immediately connected with the ones in Shadow and Bone. I will continue on with this duology to see how everything ends, I just miss everyone from the original trilogy.
I get it why every other review said that this book is better that Shadow and Bones.
Six unusual people attempting an impossible heist, overcoming their own demon and being badass.
One of the best Fantasy reads of the year :)
This book started excruciatingly slow. The flashbacks mid action scene were also very annoying and the whole thing really only came off the ground in the last 200 pages. The characters not saying anything they meant really annoyed me, as were things like only half the crew knowing parts of the plan. It felt like fake plot twists somehow.
Though I did like the characters to a certain degree and really wanted to see where this change in their lives would lead them. Near the end, I was already beginning to be wary of the final handoff, where there would certainly be a plot twist. And I was really disappointed with it. I am not a fan of books that end in the middle of something. I know this is a duology and that there was one more book to come but I detest if something is made like that. The story now isn't done. I think any book part of a series should be good on its own. This one just isn't.
Holy Saints of Ravka, I have no words, NO WORDS, can't form a coherent review because I'm just in shock.
In short: fucking FANTASTIC
rereading this edition because I'm annotating it for a friend, and ITS SO pretty. The sprayed edges, character art and the cover page is just *chef's kiss*. Super glad I decided to do this because i forgot just how much i loved this book.
Rereading a book is such a different experience because this time you KNOW what happens, so you notice the little details you missed on your first read and the foreshadowing you might not have picked up when you were trying to understand the plot. I absolutely loved reading it again (maybe even more than the first time). Can't wait to reread [b:Crooked Kingdom|22299763|Crooked Kingdom (Six of Crows, #2)|Leigh Bardugo|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1456172607l/22299763._SY75_.jpg|42090179] next:D
Check out my Six of Crows review here :)
The second half of this book was so good. I really enjoyed the epilogue, the banter between Matthias and Nina, and heist chapters. For some reason I couldn't get into the beginning of the book and had to force myself to chug along until it became good to me. Also I hate it when authors or screenwriters put gay characters in the story for the sake of having a token gay character. When the character(who I won't name) was flirting with the other guy(who I won't name) it was very cringe and was borderline harassment and then it was never brought up the rest of the book. If you're not gonna make a gay character appear naturally in the story then leave it out or leave sexuality out of the story in general because I don't care I just want a good story.
Great character work.
Great world building.
Great plot.
Great execution.
I was told that this book features amazing characters, but I shouldn't expect too much exciting action from it. And while the first part of that statement was on point, the second one couldn't have been more incorrect. The book doesn't lack for absolutely anything!
I highly recommend it!
I have no idea how I slept on this for so long. I LOVED it. New favourite for sure. I can't wait to get to the next one.
Also, I HIGHLY recommend the audiobook version.
I had a great time with Six of Crows. Like many people, I thought it was the most fun of the Shadow and Bone books, and I would recommend it to anyone. Reading the original trilogy is recommended but not required, and it could be a standalone “heist story” even if you didn't really like the originals. It feels a bit like Oceans Eleven or the first Mistborn with a solidly character-driven plot.
I really appreciated the variety and depth of the characters. From reading the original trilogy you have a few conceptions/stereotypes about the various peoples, but this feels like a fully cosmopolitan book, which is fitting for its trader city setting. I also appreciate/respect that she wasn't just showing off different in-world cultures for the sake of vague “worldbuilding,” but that the characters' backgrounds strongly shape their motives. She shows two different characters who are earnestly but not cartoonishly patriotic for their own countries, and I thought their Romeo/Juliet dynamic was very good and a strong step up from most YA.
Different characters have different things to bond over or fight about, and it truly drives the plot and their motives. Having tension within the group AND against other groups (inter-and intra-) makes all of the decisions matter and truly kept me guessing; I had no idea what would happen. There were lots of little twists, and a few really good ones.
Have fun!
This was good. Extremely slow to start, but it picked up momentum as it went along.

Wowowowowweeeeee. I was nervous about watching shadow & bone while I was still reading this but it just helped me visualize even better! Ran to grab the sequel before I even finished it.
