I loved this book far more than I thought I would! Rock Paper Scissors has everything I look for in a psychological thriller. I was so curious to figure out what was going on that I didn't want to put the book down and, using the hints dropped throughout the story, I got to sleuthing and developing my own theories.
Feeney gives more clues and information with each chapter, slowly revealing pieces to the whole puzzle. However, the story is so well thought out that just enough information is given
An addicting plot! At first I was feeling ‘meh' about the characters but it all came together with twists and turns right up to the end. I was left wanting more (in a good way) which doesn't happen often for me with thrillers.
I read this book based on a BookTok recommendation. It was entirely unexpected and enjoyable. I need to read more of Alice Feeney's books.
*3.5 stars. Absurd and far-fetched but I kept turning pages quickly. The twist device employed by Feeney works but it also limits the impact of the established tension of the novel as well as the impact of the twist reveal and doubles and triples down with more reveals/twists on top of that.
My feelings about this book are mixed, and I struggled to decide on a rating. I ended up giving it three stars because it kept me engaged and surprised me with one of its twists. However, I cannot say that I would recommend it to others. The characters are all unlikable, and they each have a secret. It is a bit unbelievable that these people would all end up in each other lives and all have these big secrets that connect them to the others. It's just too much for me. I did enjoy some of the reading experience. There are some fun, spooky elements that keep it interesting. I cannot really write too much about the plot here because it would spoil the book. Overall, I was just disappointed in the fact that it felt too contrived and over the top.
that one twist knocked me off my ass, but it dragged so so so much through the middle and besides that one twist the rest of the ending was meh
I don't fully know how I feel about this book yet. I definitely enjoyed the characters, the story, the setting. The ending however has left me with some questions, or rather some loose ends I think. But overall, I enjoyed it. I read it quickly and I definitely wanted to know what was going on and what was happening to Mr. and Mrs. Wright.
5 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Wow!! This is my first Alice Feeney book and it was soooo good. Unfortunately, when I started it, I was in a reading slump. So I put it down a couple of months but I heard that an adaptation of it was coming out on Netflix so I wanted to finish it and it certainly did not disappoint!!
I loved the writing, the atmosphere, the wittiness of it was perfect. The TWIST I didn't see coming in the SLIGHTEST!!
Took a bit for me to get into, the writing was a bit irritating with some “profound” thought at the end of basically every paragraph. It really took me out of it. I pressed on because I actually bought the book and it did go quicker in the second half. The twists were fun and I enjoyed the setting. Not amazing but not terrible if you're looking for a quick thriller.
I don't read thrillers very often, because I am already afraid of almost everything and have an overactive imagination. But I liked Rock Paper and Scissors. It was a page-turner for sure. And I liked the finale, which was so different for everyone involved.
I am so bummed that I didn't love this book. There were so many good reviews but I just found it so boring! Everyone was talking about how good the twists were but I found them to be lackluster. I don't know if my expectations were set high due to the hype around this book, but I just was really disappointed.
4.5
i enjoyed reading this book so much, it was very atmospheric and eerie at times. the plot twists were very good and i didnt guess most of them. its so close to 5 stars to me but at the end of the day I didnt have that feeling inside me after reading. still great and i recommend, especially during winter!
If I describe the ideas to you it might sound great: the propagnosia, the two wives, the letters, the books. But somehow the connection between them didn't feel good enough for my brain not to scowl.

this book was so much fun and the end had me literally reeling. jaw on the floor. the twists just kept smacking me in the face and i'm a masochist so i was living for it
I think this may be the best book I read this year. I was very impressed. I have already recommended it to a few people. Rock Paper Scissors was funny, and sad, and scary, and so very interesting. I absolutely loved the ending. Read it!
2.5 stars rounded down to 2.
While I was impressed by some of the twists, the writing style utterly killed this for me. The constant overuse of heavy-handed, clunky metaphors and similes grated on me throughout the entire book. They were so cliched that it became easy to guess where the author was going with the metaphor right as she started one. The amount of sentences that started with, “People are like (insert object here)” was truly baffling.
The characters were thoroughly unlikeable. I wasn't able to root for any of them, and I feel indifferent about the ending. Sam's chapter was a nice touch though, and I felt things were tied up fairly well. Still, this book was not for me.
I think what stood out for me with this book was the writing style. It flowed very naturally. Loved the insertion of journal entries. Helped develop the characters a lot more. I will say as I got closer to the halfway point I did have an inkling of what the twist might be. I think if the author had added a few more red herrings without making it too convoluted, it may have had a more ‘woah' impact on me. I wish the ending was a tad bit different as well. A few reveals and developments may have felt unnecessary. But all things aside a good thriller.
this book is so captivating and so hard to put down!!!! a new favorite thriller
Okay, when I picked this book up I had a feeling that I would like it but little did I know that I would end up absolutely LOVING IT! This is my first Alice Feeney book and I am officially obsessed. Her books get a lot of hype on social media and now I can see that it is all very well deserved. I mean the author knows how to write an amazing thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time and packed quite a punch in under three hundred pages! This is one of those “read it easily in one sitting” type of books and the only reason why I wasn't able to do that was because of mom life but if not for that, I would have stayed up all night reading this book from beginning to end, without a doubt. It had everything I want in my thriller novels and more. Alice Feeney is definitely an auto-buy author for me after this book and I can't wait to read all of her older books.
To begin with, Rock Paper Scissors is about a couple who go away on a trip to save their marriage to a secluded chapel that's been renovated into a house. However, both spouses have been keeping endless amounts of secrets from each other and this whole trip might be a lot more than they ever bargained for. I haven't read a book with a plot like this and for me it felt very unique and I was definitely invested all the way through. I really liked how the book jumped between the different perspectives and also between the letters that the wife had written over all these years to her husband. It was easy to follow and I flied through the short chapters, finishing the book in what felt like the blink of an eye. I also thought that the pacing was masterfully done in my opinion and every short chapter ended on a little cliffhanger, so it made you want to keep reading to find out what exactly that cliffhanger meant and what will happen next. And that ending- OH MY GOD! It was twist after twist after twist and I was there for it. I didn't see most of the twists coming, especially the bigger ones and it definitely left me feeling exhilarated and also in awe.
Secondly, the characterization is also absolutely amazing in this. Even though the chapters were really short, each and every one packed a punch and transported us into the very soul of that character. I was absolutely enamored and at the same time disgusted and terrified reading about what was going on in these characters' minds, as sick and twisted as they absolutely were. However, as flawed and horrible as these characters were, they really laid it all out in the open for us to see and this made them relatable because we really got a sense of how they go to be this way and what led them to act a certain way in a particular instance. I absolutely loved/hated all of them with a passion and this book will stay with me for a long time to come. That is certain.
Finally, the writing was my favorite kind, short and precise, without being choppy or not flowing well. Part of the reason it was so easy to race through this book for me was the writing style, it just flowed so smoothly and effortlessly and I didn't have to reread parts to get a better understanding as to what was happening or what the author wanted to convey. I also loved all the in-depth thoughts that were going through the characters' psyches and even that was masterfully put into words and made me feel for the characters, even relate to them on so many human levels. I just can't say enough good things about this book.
In conclusion, if you are a thriller lover and haven't picked this book up yet- what are you waiting for? Read it right now! Not only is it absolutely addicting and impossible to put down but it will leave you breathless and hanging on each and every word. What a great novel to start the month off with, definitely a very strong start out of the gate! Absolutely obsessed!
4.5 star round upAdam and Amelia are a married couple who won a weekend getaway to a converted chapel at Blackwater Loch in Scotland. They use this getaway to try and save their rocky marriage, but they both have ideas of their own of how this weekend is going to end. This is the first book I read by [a:Alice Feeney 15904689 Alice Feeney https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1484753445p2/15904689.jpg] and it was so good! After reading this I wanted to go and read every book she has ever written coz this one was just out of this world. The story was told from multiple povs so it was very easy to get the plot. The writing in d book?-Amazing, easy to read, very short chapters(this is another reason the book got a high rating, it was so easy to get through it coz of the short chapters). The characters?Insane,f**d upThe plot? Phenomenal, I am someone who always tries to guess the twists in books(a bad habit of mine) but I did not see the twists coming in this AT ALL.The setting in this book was also perfect, snowstorms, a converted chapel with its own graveyard, and a creepy intruder. What more can you ask? When the first twist came my mouth made a perfect O and it stayed like that for a good 5 mins lol(my brother saw me and he was like “You look like u have seen a ghost”)And there wasn't just one twist there were multiple twists towards the end of the book. After I was done I went back and reread a few parts and everything made perfect sense. I will stop here coz I feel like if I give away too much about the book I will end up spoiling it(I think I have already said too much) but pick this up if you love a good thriller with a creepy setting, a snowstorm, and a creepy intruder.
Loved the formatting and the twist threw me off so much I'm definitely gonna have to reread it soon
