4.5 stars! I loved this.
The art is beautiful, the story is great, the characters are AMAZING. Such a good graphic novel <3
This was a fun and sweet witchy romance! I LOVED the art especially the little forest sprites.
Cute and quick read. Loved the art and the fact that everyone had a different body-type and the cast was really diverse, however it gave me no emotions except for a smile at the end because the story was about love and finding your place in the world.
My goodness this was sweet and witchy. No false promises here! Loved the art, the rep, and the romance.
I was hoping for more world & magic ~ But if we're lucky this series will continue on! This is a lovely graphic novel and is nicely built for how short it is, you can finish this in one sitting. This has some charming illustrations ~If you like this try [b:Taproot 35833506 Taproot Keezy Young https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1570462987l/35833506.SY75.jpg 57340135] [b:The Witch Boy 31193426 The Witch Boy (The Witch Boy, #1) Molly Ostertag https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1488508665l/31193426.SY75.jpg 51838873] [b:Moonstruck, Vol. 1: Magic to Brew 35758543 Moonstruck, Vol. 1 Magic to Brew (Moonstruck #1) Grace Ellis https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1519888647l/35758543.SY75.jpg 57259568]
Mooncakes is kind of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina meets Steven Universe. The former because it's about an adolescent witch raised by female family members. The latter because it's colorful, sappy, and very queer. This is a sweet story about how reuniting with a childhood friend can help you face adulthood. It offers warm escapism during days that are too cold, too dark, too quick. I'd recommend it to fans of [b:This Was Our Pact 40864829 This Was Our Pact Ryan Andrews https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1536917259l/40864829.SX50.jpg 65285306], [b:Bloom 29225589 Bloom Kevin Panetta https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1528170930l/29225589.SX50.jpg 49462918], or [b:Stage Dreams 43334239 Stage Dreams Melanie Gillman https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1563401502l/43334239.SX50.jpg 67252896].
Is it 5 stars because they have like 5 or something cats? What? No! I'm not that superficial (honestly it probably is). But even if there were no black cats I'd still rate this a full 5 stars. Because it was so so fun and adorable. This had me grinning from ear-to-ear and I'd definitely recommend it if you're looking for a wholesome graphic novel.
I loved seeing the forest creatures – I wanted to know more/see more of them. I loved how they were drawn – I mean I loved how the entire book was illustrated, but I think the forest creatures have my heart the most.
I liked how the plot was laid out and how everything happened. It kept me intrigued and I was never bored even though it's a short book. Although, as it's over 200 pages – is that considered big for a graphic novel? The element of mystery was done well and I didn't suss out the plot twist!
Nova and Tam were two absolutely adorable characters and I loved getting to know them. They had such a sweet relationship and made me feel warm all throughout. This is certainly a warm hug in a book – in fact it's like a warm hug for every page in the book. Nova's grandmothers were also sweet and funny and I loved how welcoming and caring they were!
i would like to read this book again for the first time
or the sequel starring terry & tam being crimefighters
It's obvious that the main focus is the romance, I wish you have seen a development in their relationship, we did see flashbacks of their past in high school but since they finish high school shouldn't their relationship be more than just kissing, plus the plot wasn't very good, and what looked like it's supposed to be a twist didn't shocked me because I hardly seen the person whom the characters seems very surprised and betrayed by. I liked that Nova has a hearing aid, I never seen that portrayed in a book before, but there was a scene where Nova wasn't using them and she was talking to her grandmothers which made no sense because it's seemed like a big deal to Nova to wear them and a lot of the dialogues were about them.
I didn't like the art style, I'm pretty sure they didn't explain about why only Tam was trying to get rid of the demon, Nova and her grandmas are witches they cloud try with their magic too, why is it supposed to a werewolf ? And since there is wolf magic then shouldn't there be books about it or maybe a pack of werewolves to help Tam.
If you're reading this for the romance there is a great chance you'll enjoy this
If you're reading it for the witchy and spooky stuff I don't think you'll enjoy it much, giving we got little about how the magic system works.
Mooncakes is the perfect witchy and magical queer little story. It left me with so much joy with how many positive relationships there are. It truly felt like being wrapped up in a fuzzy blanket while reading this story.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The title, the cover, the hype... I had to pick this one up and I'm so glad I did.
This book is an absolute treat and I loved every minute. The artwork is fantastic and just my type. The characters are sweet and lovely. The supernatural parts feel like they fit into the real world so well...
This is where I start to feel horrible about my inability to write good reviews, because this book deserves so much praise, but I just don't know what to say besides: I think everyone should read this.
Look we have childhood friends reunited with a budding romance. There are LGBT+ characters and non-white characters everywhere making this a gloriously diverse read. The two friends are so fun to read about and I was curious about what was going to happen. There is even the friend who isn't magical (oh no forgot her name), but she is great and a platonic friend. It is nice having a little bit of everything in one book.
Besides the magic though, this is a story about family and about figuring out where to go in life– finding ones roots and how to grow.
If you like cute graphic novels then you should 100% give this one a try. If you like supernatural or coming of age books, I also recommend this!
This was a amazing graphic novel that I reverted from netgalley. If you never read a graphic novel before I will recommend you pick up this one.
The relationship between the two characters was so beautiful. From witchy magic, to unconditional family and found friendship. To finding each other after a long time. It was so beautiful.
A story of love and demons, family and witchcraft.
Nova Huang knows more about magic than your average teen witch. She works at her grandmothers' bookshop, where she helps them loan out spell books and investigate any supernatural occurrences in their New England town.
One fateful night, she follows reports of a white wolf into the woods, and she comes across the unexpected: her childhood crush, Tam Lang, battling a horse demon in the woods. As a werewolf, Tam has been wandering from place to place for years, unable to call any town home.
Pursued by dark forces eager to claim the magic of wolves and out of options, Tam turns to Nova for help. Their latent feelings are rekindled against the backdrop of witchcraft, untested magic, occult rituals, and family ties both new and old in this enchanting tale of self-discovery
