Omg this book so wild!!! Not going to lie I almost cried while reading the last page. I can't recommend this book enough. Please read it!!!
cw: self harm, suicide, overdose
I'm pretty picky when it comes to thrillers I enjoy. I usually end up thinking the main character is an idiot and should have had concerns looooong before they do. That was not the case here. I was pleasantly surprised by this book and it kept me guessing.
Truly, one of the biggest compliments I can big this book is that I don't think the main character made stupid choices in order to progress the plot. The plot just kept going and, for the most part, her decisions made sense for her circumstance. Yes, the place gives strict, weird rules, but for the money– I know I wouldn't say no. And I think that is one of the creepiest parts – I could understand her mindset and could see myself in her spot making these decisions even if the whole thing sounded too good to be true.
I also thought the mystery progressed at a good, solid clip. I will admit that I did skim some in the middle as I thought of of it was redundant, but there wasn't too much downtime and the way and the reason for her investigations made sense. Someone is missing and no one cares after she tells you that other people have gone missing? Yeah, you are going to look into it.
As for the twists and the ending. It took me toward the last third of the book to even suspect what was going on. I kind of guessed it... the concept at least, but not the entirety. So, really that is fantastic!!
Do I recommend this one? Yes! I definitely think this is a thriller giving a chance and I will be reading more by this author in the future.
3.5 stars?
another one of Riley Sager's books where the ending saved it. this was sooo slow & really wasn't hooking me until the climax. who was involved didn't surprise me at all which was disappointing but what was actually going on definitely did & was super interesting.
Page turner! Don't want to say too much about the book because... no spoilers. But it was creepy and intense. I kept want to read the ending to make sure the main character would be ok.
Enjoyed it and would read more of this authors books!
Wow... honestly wasn't expecting this ending. I've always felt older buildings have some sort of sinister history so I absolutely loved reading through this one. As they say...if it seems too good to be true...it usually is!
Jawadde, de spanning zeg. Ik kon gewoon niet stoppen met luisteren.
Duister, beklijvend, spannend en een onverwachte twist!
[b:Lock Every Door 41837243 Lock Every Door Riley Sager https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1540938359l/41837243.SY75.jpg 65308942] If something seems too good to be true....I am constantly behind the curve ball with things. I know this book came out in July of this year. I didn't get my hands on it until August and that was only because I ran across it on Scribed. I have to my eyes open for the next book by Riley Sager books. Jules has had a string of bad luck, starting with getting laid off from her job, followed by discovering her live-in boyfriend banging another woman. She ends up near penniless, sleeping on her BFF's sofa until she finds a classified ad for an apartment sitter. $12,000 to occupy a luxury apartment in the Bartholomew—a New York high society landmark—for three months. It sounds too good to be true, especially given the building is the fairy-tale setting of a novel that bound Jules and her sister as teens. The job comes with severe rules. No visitors allowed, no social media, no conversation with the rich and famous residents. She must leave the apartment in the condition she found it, and stay in the apartment every night. Jules had my sympathy throughout the book, and I felt she was a worthy protagonist. She had a lot of grief in her early background and was in an unenviable state as the well-plotted story begins. She gets comfortable and soon starts to make friends with another apartment sitter, Ingrid. Jules learns that the Bartholomew has a dark, creepy and scandalous history and reputation and that Ingrid is becoming unnerved staying there, but like Jules needs the money. When Ingrid disappears without warning in the middle of the night, Jules becomes suspicious and frightened that her surroundings hold threatening and eerie secrets. I won't give up too much more information on the story because I want you all to pick it up and give it a read for yourself. I loved that listening to it added so much more of a spooky factor for me. Well rounded thriller solid 4 stars.
Oh my gosh! THIS IS SO FREAKING GOOD! Its gripping, intense, suspenseful and it scared the hell out of me. For some reason, this gave me a similar vibe with the movie entitled, The Boy. What I absolutely love about this book is the different timelines which I thought the author have done such a good job. The writing is right up my alley and I dig it real hard. The twist literally gave me the chills and I've never have called it. I also found myself rooting for the main character the whole time even though she makes stupid decisions. The ending was so epic and I'm just satisfied on where and how it went. This is my first Riley Sager book and might as well check on his other works because I really love this one!
Wow! This is one of those books that I truly needed some time to digest before I could even begin my review. I kept hearing about this author, had yet to read one of his titles and am SO glad I did.
This book was a thrilling journey following Jules, a broke, newly single, heartbroken young woman who is struggling and truly down to her last bit of cash with no hopes for work in sight. When she responds to an ad for a job as an apartment sitter, the deal is too good to be true and she wonders how she managed to find such an incredible offer. A massive, beautiful apartment in the Bartholomew, a famous apartment building in Manhattan whose current residents are of elite status and incredibly wealthy. It also has a history and some truly disturbing stories to go along with it... and her new “job” consists of living in the apartment, with some major stipulations.
After befriending a fellow apartment sitter, the building's dark history starts to come out, leaving Jules scared and searching for answers. With the help of some curious residents and a search into the building's history, Jules is left with an even bigger fear... getting out alive.
This book was absolutely incredible and I did not want to put it down! Also left me researching the history of many similar buildings in the city (an interesting little research rabbit hole it has sent me down!) Can't recommend this book or author enough! The characters were so incredibly interesting, the history drew me in and Riley expertly kept me on the edge of my seat with his incredible writing and a deviously clever plot. I'll surely be back for more!!
If nothing else Sager gives us fun reads. I have absolutely accepted that some of the conclusions and characters just might not make any sense. I realized I have a hard time connecting to the women Riley Sager writes so I end up not feeling for them too much.
5 STARS! Riley Sager does it again and I think that this is his best one yet!
About: Without giving too much of the plot away, this is about Jules. A girl who gets a job as an apartment sitter at the Bartholomew, one of the high-profile and mysterious buildings in Manhatten. This job comes with many rules, but Jules is desperate and takes it, even if it all seems too good to be true. As Jules gets to know some of the residents, one of the other apartment sitters, Ingrid, goes missing. Jules digs into history about the Bartholomew to try to get some insight on where Ingrid may have gone. Doing so unlocks a lot of new information that should not be found.
Characters: Jules is the main character, told from her POV. I enjoyed Jules, she is a relatable character in many different ways. She isn't the typical girl who gets everything she desires. She is going through some hard times and she is doing what she can to get out of it. She cares about her friends and her family and I think she was a great main character. The other characters were interesting and made the story work in every aspect.
Feelings: I could not put this book down!!!!! I was captivated from the very beginning and I just thought it was so fantastic. I love Riley Sager, he is one of my favorite authors, hands down. This book just solidified that fact. I was so intrigued and HAD to finish it so I could put it all together.
Recommendation: 1000000000% YES! Everyone NEEDS to read this book!
