So psyched for this author's future because writing characters this unlikeable is pure talent ✨
Sometimes, seemingly flat characters are brought to life when the author gives them some flavor or subverts the trope. I read nearly a quarter of the book and I'm pretty sure an teenage Molly Ringwald fan could write a Breakfast Club murder mystery AU with more passion. Didn't finish because I didn't care.
One of the best psychological thrillers I've read for some time. I've already recommended it to my sister. I loved how not just the mystery unfolded but also how characters connected to each other. I definite read again for me.
This gave me Gossip Girl but make it murder vibes. I mean the story was ok but it just didn't hit the mark for me.
And I really disliked Jessica and how I was force fed to see her as this morally grey, dark villainous character through her assertions and conclusions about herself instead of the author allowing her actions and behavior to speak for her.
I don't like this tactic it comes off as false and ruins the magic like I'm capable of seeing and discovering this for myself.
3.5 ⭐️
I'd say this was more of a 3.75 but I'll round up. Very twisty turny but also I hate everyone in it (but like in a still readable way)
Closing thought: THERAPY. THERAPY FOR ALL OF YOU.
Is it EVER that serious?
Genuinely though, this was a fun little book. It got a tad cheesy at times, even during the serious scenes I giggled a little bit because the dialogue was just so dramatic, but I had a good time reading this. It was suspenseful and it kept you engaged. I don't know if this is a universal experience with the book because thrillers, to be honest, are not my usual genre, but the whodunit at the end DID genuinely surprise me.
That said, EVERYONE in this book is a terrible person. Some less so than others but I found it hard to root for anyone honestly, they all did some messed-up stuff, most of them more than once. The story was good though. There was a moment or two where I had to physically get up and walk around the room because the book genuinely got me.
Spoilers for who the murderer is, consider yourself warned: FUCKING MINT. SAY IT WITH ME FOLKS: IT IS ALWAYS A MEDIOCRE WHITE MAN!!
This book was wild.
Ah this book had me in suspense for almost the entire story! Every character had a motive, but who'd actually done it? Really enjoyable book with a lot of plot twists.
4.5 stars. That was good fun. Despicable characters, but oh how we love to hate them.
Melodramatic, self righteous, predictable. There was potential but I question the author's choices.
Everyone is unlikable, vain, and selfish. It was fun getting to see them lay their secrets out and the drama it caused. Character development was vastly unbalanced, which I found odd for a this being a group of tight knit friends. I liked Jess, she is definitely main character vibes. She has a huge chip on her shoulder; thinks she's the princess with bad luck but realizes later she's the villain. Her unhinged descent into villainy, jealousy, and desperation was enthralling.
But for someone who considers herself so unremarkable, it's extremely odd that two guys liked her. Also Eric's role is terrible, wtf lol. He makes the whole setup absolutely absurd. He literally pops out of nowhere & always butts in after someone confesses something. In the same exchange he'll tell people they need to confess and figure out who murdered Heather, while also dropping clues or clearing out red herrings.
So sassy and whip smart. Reminded me of Luckiest Girl Alive (in tone) which is an all time favorite of mine.
As they say, men are afraid women will laugh at them, women are afraid men will kill them”
If you love a whodunnit with time jumps and character building, PLEASE read this! I lowkey want to read it again already.
My only issue is the scene when Coop picked up Jess on the motorcycle. I couldn't have rolled my eyes any harder LOL but anyways, read the book
3.5* I enjoyed the pacing but found it slightly predictable at times. I think my expectations were a bit too high
Man I feel awful that my feelings can be summarized to “I don't really care” oops. I love books with unlikable characters as they're interesting to read so maybe it's the writing for me just ain't it. They acted all felt like highschoolers and they didn't change much from college to adulthood either.
boy this book threw me for a LOOP!!! i empathized with jess during her academic freakouts, because same. if you love plot twists, some silly love triangles and “whodunnit” cliches, and problematic main characters, this book is for you.
Such a thrilling ride!! Loved every aspect of this book and did not have one disappointment.
Jamie was a shy do gooder all her life, she gets accepted to Duquette University where she becomes fast friends with the popular kids who deem themselves the East House Seven.
She returns to the college 10 years after the unsolved murder of one of the East House Seven, Heather Shelby, whose younger brother Eric is set on finding out who murdered his sister and suspects each member of the friend group.
It's soon discovered that each friend harbors a horrible secret that sheds suspicion on each of them.
This story kept me on my toes!! Every time I thought I'd figure it out another revelation turns everything upside down. I highly recommend this book, you will not be disappointed.
This 5 start read is one of my all-time favorites. I recommend this title to everyone looking for a fail-safe thriller. All of the characters are well developed. The pacing is just right. Everything about this one clicks perfectly.
Characters seemed to be very immature. Also, I've never done it, but I dont believe mixing adderall, alcohol, and diet pills is going to make you black out. Pretty sure it would make your heart explode....
One of my favorite thrillers Ive read, juicy gossip and secrets. It was an addictive read, I couldn't put it down. Perfect elements of romance in it for me!!!!
