I've read many fiance books and this one has the foundations of finance, but I find the layout of the information presented and tone prevents it from being any good. There's a ton of other books that will give you the information you need without being pompous and condescending. Additionally, both life and money have layers of complexity and this book would rather complain about them being in poverty being their fault than actually include resources and outreach that could help.
Listen, if you are picking up a finance book then they are already trying to improve. Stop kicking people down.
Don't let this book turn you off to finances, not everyone is like this. Pick up a few different books - try them for free at the library before you decide to buy.
An excellent overview
Ramit Sethi covers all the bases AND delves into the common sense esoterica to put you on a path to financial independence.
This will forever be my favorite personal finance book. I read it in college and it was really helpful and has shaped a lot of my personal finance philosophy, and I just read it again and picked up even more than I did the first time and actually grasped a lot of the things Ramit talks about with investing. Thinking I'm going to make it a regular thing to read this book once every few years!
I think this book deserves its 5 stars rating even just for some sentences. My favourite one being : “GOD, IF I HEAR THIS ONE MORE TIME, I AM GOING TO JUMP UP AND BEAT SOMEONE WITH AN ONION. (That way it's unclear why they're crying.)”
However, this book is really great when you have no clue about how to manage your money (as I was), and when you regret a loooot of your spending (as I do) and want to learn how to handle your assets properly. While it's an american book, you can easily adapt most of it to our European countries (even if not all optimization are possible, but well we have other national social security options that perhaps don't exist for the US). If you're a bit lost with money, this book will tremendously help you and help you structure your spendings and savings. And the best part? It'll be easy to understand and funny, something I'd never have thought possible with personal finances ;)
Decided to finish this book, since I had a flight and will soon have income once again. It's fantastic, and I'd heartily recommend it to all of my twentysomething friends. While most of the tactics are very Amerocentric, the strategies for budget layout and portfolio diversity should work in any country. In particular, this book taught me a lot about what my credit card could be doing for me, but isn't because I was ignorant. Officially fixed.
Highly recommended.
Here are the quotes I took away from the book:
