Ah, the magic of Harry Potter. It doesn't matter how many times you read it. You love it anyway.
After the first book, which was a proper cracker, the second book does a fair enough job moving the story along in interesting ways, but it maybe didn't shine quite as much as the first book. I liked the character of Gilderoy Lockhart, and the climactic battle with the Basilisk, but things seemed to otherwise progress somewhat slowly. Thankfully, the third book seems to have recovered the proper pacing.
I'm still re-reading through these books with my daughter, Dot, almost every night.
This book is still great, but just isn't quite as “magical” as the first book for me (pardon the pun). Gilderoy Lockhart though is a great comic relief character and Dot loved him too.
I asked Dot if she thought this book or the first one was better. She said she looked them both the same amount. Her review of The Chamber of Secrets: “It's good and I liked it.”
And the adventure continues in the magical world of Hogwarts for Harry and his friends.. J.K. Rowling is a genius for how she wrote another epic follow up tale which includes many thrilling events and interesting details that builds a whole world of imaginations in our head and how beautifully everything makes sense at the end.. it was like pure magic. So excited to read the next book..
This book was captivating and I would say even more so than the first. The clues got together quite nicely and this mystery was quite a little bit harder for the golden trio to solve which I liked.
I also liked how we got to meet several new characters, including some minor ones, and professor Lockhart. He is an idiot, but a great character nonetheless.
I thought this was a great and enjoyable book with dark themes to it which I now understand is just a foretaste of what is to come in the latter books
While reading this, I really really regretted not having the habit of writing in my books.
I wish I knew what I thought as a kid the first time reading it. Did I believe it was Hagrid? Did I ever suspect Ginny? Did I know Dobby jinxed Harry's broom?! Arg! Guess I'll never know...
Anyway, read it for the nth time, knew exactly what was going to happen and was still left awestruck at the end and have the uncontrollable urge to pick up the next one!
3rd year here I come!
(I feel like a 12 year old again! Teehe
entertaining, sure, but the writing is terrible; Rowling never met an adverb she didn't like muchly
I'm so glad I decided to finally dive in and read this series. I am really loving it!
Imba phoenix brutalises poor enslaved snake so the climax can be carelessly stuffed into an editor's wordcount intray. We didn't even get to see the mandrakes suffer with the nihilistic dread of early adulthood!
BOŻE JAKIE TO CUDOWNE!
#Always
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. After reading Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone I was expecting more of the same middle grade level writing, but, even in the space of one book, JKR's style has noticeably matured, no doubt a necessity to deal with the darker themes presented here. Aside from her constant overuse of ellipses, I found her writing much more nuanced, her foreshadowing deftly dealt with rather than ham-fisted as in the first book, and many of her turns of phrase were positively charming - Hagrid trying to raise werewolf cubs under his bed, Moaning Myrtle blushing silver, and particularly this:
October arrived, spreading a damp chill over the grounds and into the castle. Madam Pomfrey, the matron, was kept busy by a sudden spate of colds among the staff and students. Her Pepperup Potion worked instantly, though it left the drinker smoking at the ears for several hours afterwards. Ginny Weasley, who had been looking peaky, was bullied into taking some by Percy. The steam pouring from under her vivid hair gave the impression that her whole head was on fire.
The second book of the Harry Potter series was just as good as the first one. No disappointment here. It was interesting to follow Harry in his second year and the way he has grown from what happened before. Also I have noticed after this re-read that it mentions the way his encounter with Voldemort troubled him. And how Fred and George always try to lighten up the mood. That is always a highlight for me. It is always interesting how I notice new things every time I re-read this series over and over again.
Another nostalgic indulgence! It was super fun listening to the second Harry Potter book, with it having been so many years since I read it for the first time. I had completely forgotten about Gilderoy Lockhart and what a pain of a character he is. It still is my least favorite of the books though.
