One thing I strongly believe in is introducing and talking about death early, this middle grade book really touches nicely on that subject. My favorite theme in this book is about breathing...Her sister has trouble breathing, Our main character forgets to just breath and relax a little, and the ghosts miss breathing and love the feeling of wind. There was some very nice serious moments and I like Raina Telgemeier's style of realistic story telling with a bit of fantasy I think is a really nice fit for her and I hope she writes another one like this. In all of her books I think she always introduces subjects that need to be addressed in a very nice manner.
Meant for a YA audience.
Had liked her other book, drama better than this one.
Good art, average story.
This was so sweet
This was a sweet and lovely story about sisters, facing your fears and embracing your culture. I loved the the images of Dias de los Muertos, i probably won't come across any ghosts but the festivities look wonderful.
Not a fan of ghost stuff but this was very twee, and the artwork is cute. The story gets progressively absurd over the course of the book, to the point where the resolution literally made me laugh. Weird lack of aboriginal ghosts though, given its set in Northern California.
Ghosts is a great book to pull you out of a reading rut. A delightful, whimsical middle grade graphic novel about an older sister dealing with a lot of uncertainty, and a younger sister dealing with even more. Telgemeier includes meaningful but age-appropriate messages about cystic fibrosis and Día de los Muertos. Loved it!! Quick graphic novel! Loved the style and story! Can't wait to read her other books!
I read this on the train home from Book Expo 2016 in Chicago and it was so very good. I didn't love it as MUCH as I loved Smile, but I think it's simply a case of I read Smile first. In Ghosts, we are with Cat and Maya who are getting used to a big move the family had to make in order to make life easier for Maya who suffers from cystic fibrosis. As usual, Telgemeier uses the form to explore multiple topics but my heart was with Cat the whole time. Cat just wants to be a really great big sister, and she is.
Also explored in this story is dia de los muertos and I am so very excited because I have been searching for years for some great fiction to use at the library with readers to explore this holiday (and to correct the many, many misconceptions about it).
