Good pacing and an exciting thriller. The Stephen King book that I read through the fastest (I think, (I didn't track)).
Not one of King's best but the last third really hits the spot with the father daughter story bringing a lot heart to the story,
Took me a long time to read because I kept getting sucked into other books lol. Pretty solid book. Onto the next!
DNF @ 75%
Look at 75% in I feel comfortable rating this. This is the second time I've DNF'd this book and it just honestly isn't compelling. I don't care what happens to these people and the villains are so one note. I did find some bits in the beginning and middle to be compelling, but that goodwill is constantly squandered.
You don't hear much about this book from people but it's one of my favorites of his for sure. I would give it 5 stars but I hate inconclusive endings. The story follows a man and his daughter running from a secret government agency called “The Shop”. He has the ability to control your mind and she controls fire. Together they use their powers to stay on the run as long as they can from being killed or being captured and used as lab rats. A fast paced thriller with and interesting antagonist.
Not my fave King book to date, but still compelling. 3.5 pyrokinetic kiddos out of 5.
Boy, this took a while.
I'm not a slow reader, but this book is, sadly, not very interesting. It took 100 pages before anything remotely interesting happened, and after that there were pages and pages and pages of boring bureaucracy with only very few instances of action.
Compared to other King books, this wasn't particularly well-written and had too much filler.
This was the March pick for the Stephen King readalong for the month. I almost didn't get it read on time but I am so glad that I did because I have found another King book that I liked.
I feel like I have said this in most of my reviews lately but I don't know what to say about this book. I enjoyed it a lot. And I found myself caring for some of the characters. There was only a handful of likeable characters. I loved the bond between Charlie and her dad Andy.
I'm pretty sure I said this in my last King review but I am not finding his stories to be overly descriptive anymore. At least that's the case for the last couple of books I have read by him. I put so many books on my TBR this month that I didn't pick this up until 2 days before our discussion and I was able to read all of it in those two days no problem. That shows how much I was into it.
I only really have 2 complaints about this book. One being the racism and homophobia but I look at that as it being a product of its time but I am not excusing it at all. And the second one was the ending. It wasn't a bad ending I just wanted more. I don't really care for open endings. I want it all spelt out for me and I don't want to be left with any questions.
Overall I definitely recommend you read this if you haven't already.
If it wasn't for unbelievably disappointing climax it would be 5 stars. King once again shows how brilliantly he can portray child characters. Among the best I've read from him (so far).
A thrilling read. I read this book because it was recommended to me– I've always been a fan of Stephen King (ever since, when I was 10 years old, picking up “It” in a bookstore and being unable to put it down) but I hadn't even heard of this one. It was described to me like this:
“[...]one of Stephen King's lesser known books, is actually one of his best in my opinion[...]”
and I'm very much inclined to agree. I stayed up all night reading it– it's currently 7:24 in the morning. It's one of my favorite books I've ever read (by King), and I wholeheartedly recommend it to other fans of Stephen King, of books, or of life.
Wow. One or two cases of losing the POV, as with many early King books, but Firestarter lived up to everything I had hoped for and more. If you liked the movie, you'll love the book. I realize it's a truism that the book is always better and more in depth than the movie that was based on it, and Firestarter is no exception.
