TL:DR: It's a drag. There are some good parts, like with her father, but as a whole I couldn't get myself to care about Cath, even though we share some traits. I felt like the book was going slow and would never catch me.
The story is centered around Cass in her Freshman year of college. She writes fan fiction and has social anxiety and is a nerd. Okay, but it doesn't seem like there was a plot. Here are some people doing stuff. Kind of like osverving them. If you are into characters just hanging and slowly going through the predictable motions, you may like this book. I wish I had more positive things to say about it, but this book isn't for me, but it definitally has potential to be great and it may suit someone else's tastes.
(read in 2014)
I will never forgive the 2014 book community for hyping this up so much. Ive never seen a bad review for this book (I haven't looked for one) but yo, I hate this book more than anything and its always all over youtube and ig and whatever and seeing it fills me with rage. I see the colour mint green and think of this. Its ruined mint choc chip ice cream for me,, just kidding, I don't eat mint choc chip because im not disgusting
I have read Fangirl many times at different points in my life—first as a teenager (of course), then as a young adult, and again in my early twenties. Each time, I’ve cried, but in a comforting way. I just think that Cath’s story feels so real and relatable. Personally, every time I reread it, it feels like a “curita para el corazón.” If you haven’t read it and are thinking in do in it and are older than 16, please take in mind that Cath is an 18 years old person and she reflects that.
This was fun! This reminded me a lot of being younger and growing up online in fan communities, and then being super awkward in my offline life, haha. I'm apparently only a few years older than Cath too, based on her saying 9/11 happened in 3rd grade.
This is a coming-of-age story for Cath, twin sister to Wren, as the two of them move from Omaha to Lincoln to attend UNL. I bought the book because it was local and it sounded fun, even though it's outside my usual genre. Cath and Wren grew up as huge Simon Snow fans and would write/post fanfiction together. As they enter college, Wren is ready to put that childishness aside and enter the party college life, but Cath isn't.
I appreciate that even when Cath is obviously wrong and just being driven by emotions/anxiety/etc, we get into her head to understand that. A fair number of books I've read in the last couple of years had authors who seemed to forget you can do that, so it's refreshing to read this one. Some of her anxieties are ones that I relate to and her friends are there to help her figure out how to navigate the real world. Love all the characters.
Small complaint: It was weird that Levi eventually mentions "Harry Potter" when Simon Snow is obviously a stand-in for Harry Potter. It's kind of a double-take moment since it feels like we agreed that this is a world where Simon Snow *is* Harry Potter, and now brings up the question of what's Potter's place in the world? It only comes up once though so it's easy to forget.
Really good first half, bogged down a little towards the end with family angst but good ending.
Loved it! It took some time before things started happening but I loved the relationship between the characters and it was quite wholesome and cozy.
Well done story in the mind of a girl...coming of age in college-dealing with all of that + she's a twin...with challenging family dynamics.
Here's the kicker - if you are going to read the Simon Snow series (and you should) —- read that first. This book's POV character writes fan fiction for a fictional series set with the same characters in the same world but also will spoil some of the joy of the discovery in the series.
I liked the writing, and I enjoyed the main characters but, I didn't connect to the ‘plot' aspect of this.
I don't really like fan-fiction, or I guess more accurately I'm not interested in fan-fiction, nor stories inspired by other stories. It's a detraction for me, whenever it's mentioned as a selling point for a book. And same goes for a story being told in other stories. So all in all, it's a credit for this book that I enjoyed it as much as I did.
I relate to Cath on a whole other level coz i am a mega introvert and afraid to try out new stuff.
The only think i dont relate to is Levi, sadly theres no Levi in my life lol
Made my little nerd heart sing. Loved every character and loved remembering the theories, the fics, and the community that existed in the time before deathly hallows was released.
Spoilers about Fangirl

This was a little bit difficult to me: it was my first book read in English. Despite that fact, I liked the story but I didn't like how everyone treated Nick after what happened. I also consider Cath is such a boring character and all the fanfiction stuff is something you really need to love to be woried at, so in me personal case it didnt matter to me what happens to cath and his fanfic story. In addition, I would like to say I liked Levi but I hated him a lot when he kissed that other girl, but thats realistic and happens like A LOT (wish it wouldn't). To end with, I thought we would have known more about Cath's and Wren's mother but it ended so fast and we only were able to see a little bit of that part of the history.
The characterization in this is really good. Took a while to get going (for me) and then I was very invested.
Me encantó. Es dulce y realista al mismo tiempo. Fácil perderte en la historia y sentirte identificada.
I'm glad I read Carry On before I read this one. Spoilers lol. This is such a cute story. I love the MC, her twin, the feisty Reagan and especially Levi. I love the way Rainbow Rowell puts a story together and makes it so much fun to read.
I loved this so much!! Wren was SUCH a relatable character and I really enjoyed reading about her!
I really liked the book, the only downside was that the main character could be too caught up in self-pity from time to time and that bugged me a little. Aside from that I have no negative things to say. It was nice to have a background story on Carry On (which you should read first, there are small spoilers in this book for Carry On) and the pacing was great!
Book was sweet but the ending was lackluster. I reached the end and all I could think was,”That's it? But what about___ and ___?”
