Diary of a Wimpy Kid

I don't understand why my kids like this series so much. But my younger son recommended it to me, so there we go.

Geschichten aus dem Leben eines Egoisten und seinem Freund - aus der Perspektive des Egoisten ...

Als Kind lernte ich die "Gregs Tagebuch"-Reihe erstmals durch meine Schul-Präsentation kennen, da ein Klassenkamerad mir diese als mein Thema empfahl. Auch wenn ich damals bereits Interesse außerhalb der Schule in diese zeigte, verliebte ich mich erst in die Serie, als ich zum ersten Mal die Filme sah.

Aus diesem, damals eher losen Interesse in die Bücher, entschied ich mich nun dazu, die komplette Buchreihe durch zu lesen, und dieses mal auch währenddessen nachzudenken.

Greg Heffley ist in seiner Charakterisierung ein selbstverliebter Egoist, der, dem ersten Anschein nach, nie sich selbst hinterfragt, sondern immer nur andere dafür verantwortlich machen will - Doch warum ist er dennoch so beliebt? Warum lesen wir ausgerechnet gerne das Tagebuch einer Person, die sich konstant in die Opferrolle stellt? Wahrscheinlich genau deswegen.

Wir sind es gewöhnt der Geschichte eines sympathischen Charakters zu folgen, der oftmals hilfsbereit ist, oder zumindest innerhalb der Handlung öfters seine gute Seite zeigt. Greg ist nicht so, er lässt seine nette Seite so gut wie nie raus, selbst gegen Ende spricht er immer noch etwas abgehoben. In seiner Schreibart merkt man sehr wie viel er von sich hält. Es ist die Geschichte eines Egoisten - aus der Perspektive eben dieser. Übertrieben gesagt, weckt dies das gleiche Interesse in uns, wie ein Kriminal- oder Horrorfilm aus der Sicht des Mörders.

Es bewegt den Leser auch zum Reflektieren über sein Verhalten in der Jugend - "war ich auch so?". Bedauerlicherweise gibt es viele Stellen die für die meisten Leute aus ihrem eigenen Leben nicht fremd sein werden.

Natürlich ist auch der Humor eher kindisch und mehr auf Schmunzeln als auf Lachen ausgelegt, was mich allerdings nicht davon abhielt, beides zutun. Höchstwahrscheinlich vor allem weil mich viele Witze an mein früheres Verhalten erinnerten, und ich somit über mich selbst in Retrospektive lachen konnte.

This book was a crap show. The parents are horrible. Between the yelling, throwing things at the kids, and how the punished the kids or let the youngest one get away with a crap ton... I am not shocked that Greg is a little shit. Not only is he a crap friend but he is entitled.

Read this in German - decent kids book.

Greg is an average kid. He doesn't have a whole lot of friends, except the kid across the street who he spends a lot of time with but generally doesn't consider as cool as him. He gets along okay with the other kids in school (but the girls don't seem to like him—even though he was never one of those boys who thought girls were gross). He has an older brother and a younger brother that both set out to make his life a little harder in their own way. His parents don't let him play video games all day. Oh, and he's somehow managed to avoid The Cheese Touch.

This book chronicles Greg's life in middle school. He's on a quest to be noticed—and he tried lots of different ways: the school play, running for class treasurer, becoming a safety patrol, applying to be the school comic writer, and more. But he keeps being held back by his friend Rowley, who seems to get everything Greg wants. Will Greg get noticed this year? Will his friendship with Rowley survive it? Will he get....the Cheese Touch?

I liked this book a lot, it was funny. Clearly the author remembers what it was like to be in junior high, it's spot on. As a tool to improve my German it was perfect because the grammar and vocabulary were at my speed, and the story was made up of incidents and observations that were funny enough to stand alone, but which linked back to previous incidents so that there was a feeling of plot/momentum to carry me along.

I really wish I had read this as a kid, I think I would have had a better reaction. As it is, I just kind of sat there and kept raising my eyebrows. “Really? Is that how kids are?”

The illustrations were pretty amusing though, and definitely what took this from a 2-star to a 3-star. Maybe at 8 or 9 years old, I would have enjoyed the rest of the book.

Definitely getting book two :)
I hate the character of Greg though because he is soooo selfish and ambitious in a negative way. but this book is definitely funny and worthy of the four stars.
I hope Greg improves his grammar in book two

This was a pretty funny book! Made me laugh out loud several times. I don't know why I've waited so long to read them!
